3.5 Rebuild Poll Part 8
« on: October 25, 2009, 09:29:20 AM »
If you were rebuilding 3.5, how powerful would you make PC's?

Are they the best of the best of the best outshining all other members of their race?

Are they normal people who have had the luck/foresight to gain the training that has made them the elite of their race (but still not the most powerful examples of it).

Are they humble nobodies who advance to demigodhood through luck, perseverance, and acquisition of power?

I picked option 1 just because it's the closest thing to how I feel.

I don't want PCs to be inherently more powerful than other members of their race, but assuming we allow for more generous stat generation (such as 3.5 using 15 points for weak NPCs and 25 or more points for PCs).  So, having higher ability scores makes you better than other members of your race strictly speaking, but that's about all I'm looking for in this regard.

Also, assuming the use of NPC classes, PCs will be more powerful than 95+% of all members of their race due to class.

Agreed with RobbyPants; PCs are special members of their races, but they're not the most powerful ones ever, and most of their specialness arises from PC class levels and high ability scores.
So you end up stuck in an endless loop, unable to act, forever.

In retrospect, much like Keanu Reeves.

I believe more in option 2, power itself is simply a matter of development, given the same amount of upbringing and talent, NPCs and PCs only differ in one thing, how important they are. Not how powerful they are.

That said, unlike NPCs, most PCs are the star of the show, they don't need any special edge, they earn that edge by going out and solving troubles, gaining more experience than equivalent NPCs who spend their time sitting at home and waiting for PCs to do things. Of course, NPCs grow in power too, but the very nature of the game means most of them tend to be static in power, barring the rising plot device or rival adventurers.

The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

I voted #2, but I'm grumpy about it.
I don't think anybody has the same training / life experience as  blah blah blah.

#1 and #3 are kinda dm fiat, and if deities are around they get to choose.
If we're neutering the 8s and 9s caster craziness, it's almost not an issue.

It would be nice if an Army could beat a Wizard ... hence a wizard wouldn't even think of challenging an army.
A deity could challenge an army, but why tick off the deific heirachy.

I picked two, but I agree with Rob.  It's not like they are very special, only slightly special.  And others of the same race are gonna be just as special.

Oh, I totally missed the caveat on #2 about "having the same training".  That being the case, #2 is much closer to how I feel.

I do not think this is a thing that should be overly delved to far mechanically.  This is a matter for the DM (and players) to determine flavor wise.  I do not think mechanics should push one way or another.

I voted the second one for that reason.

i see it sorta like in clash of the titans.. zeus is looking into the scry pot, and viola perseus is somebody all of a sudden..

once they are stated out, the commoner starts to fade and the ta'veren kicks in.
