Stranger with the burning eyes?
« on: October 12, 2009, 04:26:24 AM »
I've looked at this Prestige class several times now and it seems fun as hell. We finally switched back to our more lenient DM and the one that seems to enjoy it when I smash his campaign wide open(I don't have the heart to PunPun the guy though). So I'm wanting to play a character focused around this prestige or at least has the same flavor to it, does anyone have any ideas?

All books are cool(3.0 and 3.5)
Dragon is fine
3rd party stuff is fine
The DM is playing races really weirdly and is letting us drop either the HD or the LA, depending on which is higher(LA buy off is a no go though)
I simply want the most necromantically inclined character I can get(and still be pretty strong) with a level or so in the stranger

You should point out the source, which, as I recall, is 3rd-party.

Hmm, I suppose they designed it as some sort of mobile guy, but frankly, I would just do the normal Magic Jar tank: Pick the largest/strongest monster you can find and posess it for awesome combat power. A build I designed used that on undead minions, instead of living monsters. He would put his body inside a portable hole sealed into the chest of his undead minion.
Use either the biggest monster you can rebuke (you should turn it into a Corpse or Bone creatures), or an awakened dragon corpse. Of course, since you can retry at will, if you play it safe you can try a couple of times to enter living monsters, too. Now this class is very anime. If you play it a certain way, you could never stay in one body long, and be virtually immortal. the Wildfire ability is obscene. OR you could create one body as a primary combat body, outfit it with magical items, and keep it somewhere safe, and only get it whenever you need it. The trouble is always taking your magic items from one body to the next. You might try to play with an evil version of Sacred Vow and take VoP, but it's doubtful that these effects would ever apply to your host bodies.

Now this is clearly a dread-necromancer class, even though it doesn't advance your rebuking level, unfortunately, so just use that. DN8/SSwtBE10/whatever. I would take a Martial class dip, too, since you should play this as a gish. I would definitely take the Stranger up until the return to Token ability, unless you always start from a rebuked, posessed monster. In that case you could maximise your rebuking by taking as many DN levels as possible, or other classes that advance your casting and rebuking.
so that would be:
DN8/Stranger1/Pally of Tyranny2/DN rest.

Race wise I would take a Bone creature Half-fey something (human if you can keep the bonus feat, and take Magic in the Blood, or something else with stat mods if you can't), or a Pixie, and drop the LA. You want your Cha to be obscene, and you need no physical stats whatsoever :). If you can only drop LA if you have RHD, then play a small Outsider and drop the LA.

However, to make a character who travels from body to body, just play an Imp Fiend of Posession. It's shorter, so you have more room for other stuff.

I really like this PrC too. I'm playing an Ur-Priest/Anima Mage/SwtBE in Tshern's "Dispatching the Message" PbP game on here (if it ever gets going again... he's been busy :P ). This is like the 3rd or 4th version of this character I've made.

The PrC is clearly geared towards entry as a sorcerer, and it is pretty tricky to get in as an Ur-Priest, but it is doable. I basically do what Brainpiercing suggests, and enslave physically powerful "minions" to semi-permanently possess. To make sure they never even try to make the save, I took the Mother Cyst feat and stick a Necrotic Cyst in them.

I think Dread Necro would be an interesting entry, also. For the item thing, I enchanted my "token" with some magical effects. You could also use something like Drawmij's Instant Summons, or an intelligent item that can teleport itself to you. I'd definitely suggest highly enchanting just a few items, and having a way to get them back, though.

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

What are the possible methods for entry that you guys know of?

Sorcerer 10 (or Sorcerer 6/Prestige Class 4, etc)
Dread Necromancer 10
Favored Soul 10/Contemplative 2 with the Envy domain (Spell Compendium)
Warmage 12 with Arcane Disciple (Envy)

Are there any I'm missing, or PrCs that grant Magic Jar (possibly at a faster rate)?

Cleric 11 with the Envy domain and Domain Spontaneity (either the feat or the ACF).

Ur-Priest/Contemplative with the Domain Spontaneity feat.

Wizard 9 with Signature Spell (Magic Jar), Uncanny Forethought, or other tricks to cast spontaneously.

Dude, that 5th level ability is brutal. Come on, is there no way for a full-caster to abuse that thing? Also, shit, why did I not know about this when I was designing The Doctor? Or, more appropriately, The Master....

Dude, I'ma take this book and so make a campaign with it. Any thoughts on balance issues?
