Suggestions for an easy to learn non magic RPG?
« on: September 27, 2009, 07:31:08 PM »
So, we've got a DM in our group (we rotate DMs) who keeps getting sick of DMing any RPG that includes magic.  He loves technology games and future games.  Right now, our group is playing D&D 3.5 and Shadowrun, and he wants something else (more technology or at least as much as Shadowrun, no magic).  However, the catch is that the group is tired of learning new game systems, especially complex ones.  So the question is this: what game would be good for this situation?  It should feature technology a great deal, but not magic at all.  It should be very easy to pick up and learn for people who are used to D&D and Shadowrun.  It should be easy for the DM to control (he gets annoyed by people getting too creative).

Any good ideas?

I don't agree with your DM. RPGs are games about using your imagination and being creative. Go for d20 modern , it works brilliantly without the magic mechanics (as all d20 games do).
Or, you could play Savage Worlds and use the magic chapter for weird science.

I certainly don't agree with the DM either (I like creative players when I'm DMing and creative play when I'm a player) but we need more DMs in the rotation.  D20 modern has come up a few times, but D20 seems a bit odd in modern games simply because it handles skills so poorly.  Right now he's talking about doing a non magic version of Shadowrun, but I'm not sure how well that will work.

Non-magic SR has a certain charm to it and it is fun to play, however then the SR universe doesn't make sense so you would have to make up your own universe and decide if you want to keep orks, trolls, dwarves, and elves.
I still recommend checking out SavW, even if it is only for personal ends.

I'll go ahead and second Savage Worlds as an easy to learn system. Using Weird Science instead of the other magic systems works well.
