So wait what class is best for going into it? Something comprehensive looking at qualifying classes outside of the build section would be cool.
True Sign of Player Paranoia:
Player:"I look out of the keep"
DM:"There are no visible armies"
Player:"Aw crap theres an Invisible army!"

Depends on what you're looking for.  My personal bias is Wizard, especially for raw power, but then again I'm also fond of entering it after duskblade/xxx/ur priest and making a two way gish out of it.  Doc Rock has his Favored Soul builds, and an archivist or cleric can also get in with a little creativity.  If I had to give a #1 best entry, my answer would be Wizard.

I love the Favored Soul -> Exalted Arcanist entry. It's so creative!

I like favored soul in by Jacob's Ladder, because it gives you, at long last, a way to do spike healing that almost sorta kinda doesn't quite totally suck.

(It still sucks)

Go wizard.

Lemme know what you want posted in the reserve post, or I can send details for the handbook account (or hell, you may have em already from Tshern) so you can edit them into the last post of the guide itself.

I like my changeling double focused specialist 3/war weaver 5/shadowcraft mage 5/spellguard of Silverymoon 4/shadowcaster X.

Use the Racial Emulation feat from Races of Eberron to qualify for shadowcraft mage.

You double-specialize in transmutation and illusion, get a ton of spell slots devoted to illusion and transmutation (both of which are awesome for defensive and offensive buffs, respectively), and has the whole shadowcraft mage thing going for ultimate battlefield control and flexibility.

I dare anyone to find a hole in that logic.

On the downside, you have to spend all your time pretending to be a gnome.

I could be a gnome instead, but then I wouldn't get that oh-so-delicious double-specialization and +5 spell slots per level.

Also, I'm an illusionist! Personal illusions FTW!

...actually, come to think of it, you could make a case against a changeling being able to disguise herself as a gnome. Changelings range from 5' tall to 6' tall, and gnomes range from 3' to 3'6". Disguise Self (which the changeling Minor Change Shape duplicates) can change your height by a foot.

Maybe you could disguise yourself as a freakishly tall gnome?

Simply be a short changeling and disguise yourself as a tallish gnome. It's not like anyone in the game world knows the mechanical differences between Medium and Small, after all.

How does Focused Specialist work with Double Specialization?
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

How does Focused Specialist work with Double Specialization?
Focused specialist takes away a single regular spell slot and grants you 2 extra bonus spell slots for your specialization. If you have 2 specializations, you appear to get 2 sets of specialized slots.
