Switching Out Familiar
« on: September 12, 2009, 12:49:33 PM »
It's not so much something I absolutely need now that the DM's taken my becoming a Wizard out of the equation, but I was just wondering is there was something that replaced the familiar a wizard gets at 1st level? I've looked through Crystal Keep's pdfs, and found Arcane Reabsorbtion which allows you to make a spellcraft check at DC 20+3*spell level to get back a wasted spell, and an arcane focus, but those aren't really what I'm looking for. I've also seen variations that if you become a specialized wizard you can also take out familiar, but I don't like the idea of losing schools. I like being a universal wizard more.
I reject your reality, and substitute my own.

Lots of options, though most are for specialized wizards (which is a very good tradeoff, btw - you don't lose too much versatility by giving up Enchantment and Evocation and specializing in Conjuration or Transmutation). Can't think of any for generalists off the top of my head, but I'm positive there's more.

For specialists, there's Immediate Magic (Most suck, but the conjuration one is chiseled masterfully from a block of pure, solid Win), from PHB II. Each school also gets three ACFs in Unearthed Arcana, one of which trades away the familiar.
It's all about vision and making reality conform to your vision. By dropping a fucking house on it.
