Splash weapons harm them.  It's not much, but you can just target the square the swarm is in and toss an alchemist's fire at it every round at your maximum distance and just take a move action to get further away.  But really, you just want to have an AoE direct damage such as a breath weapon or scroll of fireball.

they ask a real PC to kill the swarm for them.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

swarmfighting weapon enhancement from Dungeonscape

This seems oddly worded, but I think this works to deal with swarms. +1 valorous swarmstrike lance then.
Thanks :)

Question: Wielding a torch, is extra damage from Weapon Specialization, Power Attack, Maneuvers, Sneak Attack, etc. fire damage, too? I've known the cantrip + Sneak Attack combo, but I've never considered this. Are there other weapons that deal elemental damage exclusively (except for splash weapons. They suck.)? A warblade could switch to torches relatively easily..

Also, are there any magical torches that can be used to cause fire damage?

You could say Dark Speech at the swarm.
Commoner 1 with nothing could have it.
The swarm would then consider it's options.
 ;)
That only works against swarms with int 2 or lower, though.

Does someone know what the Martial Adepts can do about swarms besides the things already mentioned?

  • PM me if you're interested in some Arena action!
A Swordsage could probably do just fine against swarms with the Desert Wind manuevers that deal fire damage, do AoE damage, etc.  A Crusader or Warblade could use White Raven stuff to let the wizard / sorcerer handle the swarms.

yeah, but TOB chars are not 5th-6th tier, more like 3rd-4th.  thats about the difference in tiers of a psywar and a wizard...

Sorry, it didn't seem too off-topic to ask it here. I know Martial Adepts aren't Tier 5-6, but I wanted to ask regardless.

Set yourself on fire.

Swarms can't catch you if you're on fire.

Swordsages just use something like Hatchling's Flame, or an item.

And any good-aligned character can become a Dragonborn with the Heart aspect to take care of swarms.

Silly Solo, that's Ninjas!

Okay, so what about swarms that are immune to fire?

So from the gist of this, it's not a good idea to throw swarms that cast spells or have otherwise powerful attack options on an unprepared party unless parts of the party can hide and/or protect themselves from any or most of the swarm's attacks until such time that the spell casters have sorted things out.

That would be a pretty fair assumption.
