BLYHT Forum Going Away
« on: July 19, 2009, 03:44:44 PM »
With regards to the 'Bitch Like You Have To' forum...

<snip>
We are going to move forward with shutting this whole section down- but I will put up a thread about that later tonight to get feedback as to what can be moved, what can be restarted, should anything stay, etc.  I could see a griping thread definitely be ok, but let's give it a day or two.

I think we should get this discussion rolling. See what people think.

And with 'whole section' she meant Bitch Like You Have To forum, not the specific thread? This seems like the most obvious possibility, but I just want to be sure.

But, yeah, I've tossed in my two cents about that one, but perhaps I'll come up with something more.

You are correct, the whole BLYHT forum will be going away.

It was a trainwreck from Day 1, but some people like watching trainwrecks.

"I think there are too many insults being casually flung around on the boards in general.  I'd like to have an open discussion to bring this to light, explain why it's damaging to the boards, and brainstorm ways to confine the negativity and promote a more positive outlook."

+1 and I think that there should be discussion about what to do when a poster repeatedly acts in such a manner.

We all need to wreck a train now and then.

This is why bumper cars are so fun.  :love

Better in my mind to have a place to do so.

I split these posts off from the other thread, since that thread was more of a proposal of a topic place...

So, with the upcoming (at some point) reincarnation of the boards, the Bitch Like You Have To forum will be going away. I'm pretty sure that is a definite with the BGs.

The thing is though that we all understand that sometimes you need a place to vent...just to get something out of your system so you can move on. So we're looking for ways to keep a balance between allowing vent thread or some such and keeping the negativity down on the boards.

There is the additional problem of venting threads devolving into bickering/fighting/poo flinging, so that has to be considered as well.

Anyways, we do want to hear what people's thoughts on the matter are, so let's hear it...

Sorry I helped derail it. Forgot what the original purpose was.

I still think a 'negativity forum' is the best way to go, a specific place for anger and bile in general, with far more relaxed guidelines than the rest of the forum. I think if the DoW is brought back up, this would be the place for it.

It would still have to be pruned, of course, and imo, a bit more than it is now. Venting and hatred is fine, but a continuation of it I agree can be detrimental.

I never liked the idea of it being hidden though, and perhaps this has contributed to some of the apprehension about it.

Another problem I see is that even with stricter rules, discussions keep getting derailed into a shitstorm and the mods seem to (please note I said seem to) ignore it, or rather, watch the trainwreck become bigger... what makes me wonder why the BLYHT section has to be shut down...

EDIT: and deleting what isn't proper in the "troubled" threads definitely don't help into containing such outbreaks...

And if the shitstorms keep coming, the moderators and admins are forced to take action and start throwing users out. Many of the worst feuds took place at BLYHT and there they were confined. Quarrels are inevitable and I believe keeping them in one place is better than flatou making them forbidden.

Did we do away with DoW some time ago, or is it just that no one has started one in a while?

The problem with having an area with lax rules and people can say whatever they want and keep it confined is that it doesn't stay confined.  People form opinions about one another in that area and then aren't able to separate out their feelings in other reasonable threads.  I've seen it happen on numerous occasions here.

I also don't necessarily believe in a place to "Vent".  I think a place to post bad things, etc is fine and healthy, but I don't want to encourage negativity.

I do want an area of the boards though with a minimum post count where people can talk a bit more openly, but I'm looking for suggestions as to an area that BLYHT could become.  There are some threads in there that I don't have a problem with.  Some could move to the regular off topic forum, some may need a new home in whatever we decide to transition it to.  And some just don't really belong.

But I very much want input.

Right now I don't see any viable reason to keep an area for venting or for people to let loose without control- I feel some of that is what got us into trouble in the first place.  If I trusted the majority of the audience was mature enough to handle it, sure, but I don't.  But my mind isn't completely made up, so please let me know what you think!

So far I haven't visited a single forum as active as this where threads don't from time to time get out of hand. For all I know it is smarter to keep the clusterfucks in one place rather than essentially force them to take place on a dozen or so different boards.

That was my feeling too, Tshern, but it wasn't being confined.  In all of it's iterations, it just wasn't confined to one spot and was spilling over.  Someone would let loose in the bitching forum or the DoW and then drag it into another, on topic thread with snide, shitty comments against the person they have now decided they have a personal vendetta against.

And I don't want these to be forums where people feel free to insult and berate fellow posters.  And that is happening too much.

Overall though, it just says "negativity is ok" and that's not the tone I want to set.  Negativity will happen, of course, but I don't want it to be so... sanctioned.  Does that make sense?

I'm not opposed to leaving the area, re-naming it, re-focusing it, and cleaning it up, but I want help with the refocus.

Not completely confined, but still a lot of the storms stayed there. One possibility would be to change the board to somekind of a 'blog thread' area that would allow the vents regarding one's private life or whatever. It would still serve as the nexus of nasty words and aggressive opinions against life, but it would keep the range of topics a lot smaller and, by extension, easier to control.
