Bard / Sublime Chord Spell Selection
« on: July 13, 2009, 11:44:19 PM »
I was just curious of what people might choose for spells known for a Sublime Chord.  The character is supposed to be mimicking a Sorcerer/Wizard for the most part--no particular theme but trying to maintain a Bardic flavor, plus future campaigns and allies are unknown.  Versatility and self-sufficiency are paramount, as well as having some good go-to spells for a standard fight with monsters.  Due to class features and the like, Enchantment and , to a lesser extent, Illusion spells will end up being boosted or boost-able by using Bardic Music.  Also, group buffs are a good option due to chain spell, extend spell, and Metamagic Song.  SoDs have he potential to shine due to Doomspeak from Champions of Ruin.

Anyway, I will know the following amount of spells in the end:

0th: 6 known
1st: 5 known
2nd: 5 known
3rd: 3 known
4th: 4 known *Wizard spells start here
5th: 4 known
6th: 4 known
7th: 4 known
8th: 3 known
9th: 2 known

My current list of potential spells looks like this (Spells not from the PHB or SpC are noted for referencing):
Blue spells are spells I feel I can't do without or really want no matter what.

Irresistible Dance++, getting it as a level 6 spell is full of awesome.

Seems to be a solid list.  Choice is difficult...

+1 to Irresistible Dance at 6th.  Also, have a good look at all bard spells that come in quicker than the wizard counterpart.

Another suggestion is to ask the DM about the possibility of custom-made runestaffs (Magic Item Compendium).  If the DM is ok with them, this means most spells with hour/level duration should be on runestaffs instead of selected as known spells (Superior Resistance, Mind blank, Heart of the foo...)  If the group wants Greater Magic Weapon, get them to purchase a metamagic rod of Chain Spell.  Expensive, but it will work for them.

I would also avoid the situational spells.  Either get another wizard to cast the teleport/greater teleport/plane shift line, or have the group purchase scrolls.  As for Assay Resistance, I would get a wand.  Partially charged if possible.  4th level is crowded enough as it is.

If you can wait that long and survive (or if the DM's ok with psychic reformation), don't take dispel magic and wait for the greater version.  Clerics, Druids and wizards alike are able to cast it, so the party should do fine.  As a worse case, consider getting it on a runestaff also.

Thank you both very much for your input.  Otto's is getting Blue'd.

Consider putting in Evard's Black Tentacles. I had a sublime chord that put Arcane Thesis in EBT to great effect. Layering in neat little metamagics like fell weaken on top of that is just fun, plus which the grapple score is a function of your caster level. My whole role was literally singing and dropping EBTs so the beefsticks and rogues could go smack things around.

I would get a lot of mileage out of EBT...  thanks.
