Value of Encounter Recharges, relative to Psi Augments
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:27:56 PM »
This is a little complicated, and the full extent of it won't be know until PHB3 comes out.
And I don't have access to the DDi, so this is just inference.

Here's the deal:
At-will 1s and Encounter 1s are known quantities.
The 4e Psion puts 2 power points in between those two values.
Is it a hard and fast comparison?
Maybe not, I don't know yet, but it seems a reasonable assumption.

If so then:
Recharging an Encounter 1, is "worth" 2 power points.

This means Salves of Power are worth 2 power points, if used for JUST first level encounter powers.
This also  means a recharge class ability is worth a Whole Truck Load of Power Points.
This means Swordmaster is worth X, in terms of powerpoints, and that's just for Enc 1s.
Lich recharges encounters at 2/6. That is worth 2/3 pp per ROUND (!!); and then it also effects higher level encounters.
This means that Rechargers have de facto Arbitrarily High power points.

This does not take into account ANY of the higher level At-wills from the Psion, because how do you count them?
This does not take into account PP and Encounters above 1st level, because how do you count/consider that?

I don't know how this will play out.
But it seems to me that 4e Psionics can NOT be broken (wink).
Because the simplest of recharge mechanics is worth far more Power Points, than what a Psion has.

Anybody get my drift here?!

There are supposed to be rules about power points (which weren't included as part of the Psion pre-release) that talk about stopping/reducing this kind of potential abuse.

EDIT: It is possible that this is only wishful thinking on my part, but the Design & Development article regarding the Psion mentions something like this.

Alas, I don't have access, I was just working off of what was posted on gleemax 4e CO.

EDIT - nope see below
So, I have no idea how many power points a 4e Psion has, but I can guess.
2 pp separates an At-will from an Encounter, and you have  4 + 7 + 2 = 13 encounters = 26 pp.
Easy enough. And then you'll get a little more via class features or whatever.

EDIT - this still applies
The psion side isn't really possible to be broken.
I'm saying that Encounter Recharge mechanics, completely independent of psionics,
now can be rated (if that's the right word) or more accurately compared, to the amount of pp.
And the encounter recharges usually offer way more pp-equivalents, than straight psionics.

Example:
Swordmaster paragon path level 16 class ability.
Recharge encounter on crit.
1/20 or 1/10 or 3/20 or even 1/5, of every attack generates 2 pp equivalent.
That's gonna be waayyy over what a psion gets.

Balancing all that:
1 pp augments are lots more flexibility, than not having that at all.
At-wills instead of encounters from level up, are lots more flexible too.
Sort of a Kiter's super tool kit; not that I like that concept.

So, flexibility vs. giant piles of powerpoints.

Seriously man, just buy DDi.  I had an aversion to it at first too, but after trying it, it really is several times over more well done than I ever expected from them.

If you play 4E it really is indispensible.

And remember, you can always pitch together with 4 other people and get one account to share.  You can all log in to stuff and you each can get a copy of the character builder.  Surely you and a few buds can spare $2 a month.

Changed title of thread, to reflect what's really going on.

Edited second post, to reflect ...
pp cap at 15.
eepop - I hear you, I just cay-yant right now (complicated).

So the Psion gets 3 at-wills max. That kinda cans the versatility around Paragon.
Each "At-will" counts as an At-will, and two limited Encounters.
This is ahead of the At-will + Encounter, totals for other classes throughout Heroic.
It's worth it IF the higher than 7th level "at-wills" make up for not having 3+ true encounter powers.
I'd hazard a guess of yes, for now.
Any encounter recharge ability, is obviously better, and clearly so now.

Wizard still benefits to hybrid (maybe) depending on what comes through.
Paragon Multiclass works better via the Tsuyo extra At-will trick.
Human of course (psigh) , feels a little 3.5ish , but that's not a problem.

Human Wizard/Psion (somehow or hybrid) might be the leading option so far.
One of the gleemax CO guys spotted a good Paragon Path.
