I's already gotten it a few days prior. It's nonetheless appreciated.

Man, I don't know why you people are having so much trouble finding them...  :p

I have yet to play an actual game. Sadly, it's been a year and a half since I got to play in a regular D&D game at all. So I'm still keeping many of my opinions to myself (however, even with some of the hypotheticals I've done on my own, I like, but I won't say more than that.)

I have 1e 2e 3e and 3.5e down, at least as far as my personality parasites allow.
4e is a different game ... perhaps more different than OLD D&D, the really early stuff.
I don't like that at all.
But evolution includes bottlenecks, so we'll see when this edition starts to float better.

I figure the 4e SRD, will eventually include more previous-edition type material, and a Splat sized Fix book added, would be good.

DMs seem to set-up a little quicker. Skill Challenges are still a big problem.
I'd like to agree with Psychic Robot, except the weenie filter I post through, won't let me.
I definitely agree with Sinfire Titan.
I keep going, hey in 3e I'd do ... oops ... 4e can't do that.

Rules streamlining and improvements, should allow expanding the options, not contracting them; see Thac0.

PROPHECY (!!) - I think we'll see a 4e pun-pun-ish build within the next year. I look forward to it.

Anybody else want the site with all of the D&D books?   :P

Bah, piracy implies raping and pillaging. Downloading books on the internet is a much more simple theft.

Well i was at Mecha Con this weekend, a smaller convention held here, and finally got to play 4e. We ran through lost temple of the Fey with some pre-made characters the guy running it had made. Party consisted of Human wizard, Halfling Cleric, Dwarf Paladin, Dwarf Rogue, Goliath Barbarian, and Half Elf Star Warlock (me).

*The tactical combat was a big plus in my opinion. We all coordinated our efforts and were very successful.
*The rules don't get in the way. The only incident we had that slowed the game down was the marker not coming off the battle map after the first fight, we worked around that. Had we had more time there would have been better role playing.
*I was playing a Star Lock and did ok, i would have been tearing everything up had i not consistently rolled bad.
*Barbarians can be better controllers than wizards. We had the final room almost cleaned out by the barbarian in 1 round. He was just pin balling around dropping bad guys then charging the next one.
* Action points are useful but not dominating. For the fights it definitely helped to make them feel more cinematic but didn't destroy the game as we saw it. Best one was the 2 dwarves using their action point to get to the boss in final fight, they hauled ass with a net of 3 moves ending in a charge each.
* Skill Challenge that we did wasn't that bad, but i understand the complaints about them now.
* While it could have just been the module or the DM it still felt like there were a lot of skills that weren't all that useful to have.
* DDI makes purchasing books almost pointless, all new books are available through it. This makes DDI nice if you don't want to invest all at once and have a consistant internet connection, these guys had a laptop with a usb verizon card in it, the internet through cell phone towers.  He also used the character generator to make all the characters and said it took him less than half the time it normally would have taken.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

My opinion remains largely the same as it was a year ago:

1. It's a smooth, polished tactical combat game.
2. It isn't what I want to play, and there are better systems on the market for what I want.
3. It's not going to be as successful as WotC hopes, because the digital initiative gamble didn't pay off.

The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

Wasn't their digital initiative partially an outright lie? Specifically, the tech demos of the electronic D&D table we were supposed to drool over?

If all the people who bought 4e, were just the dudes who were !@$# -ing about it ...
well they duped themselves.
Looks to me like new people did come in.
Wotc thinks Essentials will do the same.
Good Luck. I guess it'll work.

Most of the 4e material could fit into a
3e feat slot at levels 3 or 6.
But that's just me.

Broken base was a necessary part of the gamble.  What it boils down to is this: they knew they couldn't keep the current profit model going forever, because every time they break their base with a new edition, the amount of time before they have to break it AGAIN grows shorter.

So they tried to shift to a completely different, monthly-fee-for-service based profit model.  Unfortunately, they didn't have the manpower or the technical expertise to make it work, so it failed...and now they're right back to pumping out books and hitting the "New Edition" button when they reach market saturation.

I'll just wait for 4.5.
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

No waiting necessary ...  ;)

The generic book market has sagged in the last 5-10 years.
It seems to me that the 4e books sold about on trend.
The additional problem of going after "new" people,
is if you assume "they" are youngerish,
the use of legal/illegal digital downloading, is more likely.

I'd bet those sales numbers, are independent of any grognard grousing ... points to self.

It's a huge amount of material to reconcile with previous editions  :p

I've stuck with 3.5.  Nothing personal against 4e, but I kinda like the screwy ways of 3.5.  And the fact that I already own over $100 in books in 3.5.  I've yet to meet a 4e, player on my campus;  which is funny, as all the players I've recruited so far are either new, or are big believers in the 3.5 way of things.  So, I've yet to see 4e's popularity.

I would like WotC to just let 3.5 be completely free, so that I can get all the content on d20srd.org (does 4e have anything similiar>).
