Favorite Dominion Card?
« on: June 17, 2009, 03:56:48 PM »
I was playing Dominion last night with Shewolf and her boyfriend, and we hadn't played for a long time, so I was kind of concerned I'd lose.

But as soon as we laid out which cards were int he game, I saw my golden ticket: Throne Room.

I love this card. Double the effectiveness of a lot of things. Like when combined with the thief, I'm taking a shit-ton of money from you. Without the Throne Room I'd have to village into 2 Thieves, which is 3 cards I'm using that aren't money or other useful cards for winning the game.  But that's just my strategy that's been working for a while.  I'm sure there are others (hell I hadn't even seen the Adventurer before it came out randomly last night) that are possibly better or have interesting ideas/strategies behind them.

So what's your favorite Dominion card, and why?
The cake is a lie.

In essence: it's a bitch. ;)

In practice, it's another card that requires you to either use it or play against it.
In the games I've played, the player that got witches first (or used them the most) almost always won.
Exceptions were for lucky players with Moats.

It seems like Witch could be pretty hard to deal with if you don't have Moat. However Shewolf pointed out Remodel might actually be a good reactionary card that screws with Witch pretty well.

Remodel is a pretty good reactionary card, however it's still reactionary.
Its more effective to use the witch than to deal with the witch.
In order to Remodel the Curses (into Estates or whatever), you have to get a Remodel, potentially wasting a buy, get lucky and have a hand with Remodel and a Curse, and then waste an action Remodeling a harmful card into a "dead" card.

It's strictly an improvement, yes, but it's better to force that on opponents than have to do it yourself.

But either way, you are either playing the card or reacting to it.  It forces particular strategies more than I would like.  (And more than most other cards.)

Likewise with Chapel, one of the only ways to screw over the Chapel strategy is by using lots of theives.
(Chapel strategy being: get a fair amount of gold, chapel away everything that isn't gold or provinces.  You end up with a small deck that can buy a Province every turn.)

I actually remember either you or my boyfriend being the one to point out that you can use remodel to get rid of a curse card...I was in favor of the witch being awesome. :D

I hate the witch too. Mostly because it was in the first time I played and we didn't have the moat, so it was really hard.  Sure, remodel is good, but it's so rare you get that with your curses.

I'm a big fan of the multi-power cards like the Market.  Just fun.

Ah, the Market, the perfect complement to the Laboratory.

So, looking over the Intrigue cards, it looks like a lot of cards designed to screw over your opponents; not so much to help yourself.
Ex: Saboteur:  IIRC each opponent discards from his deck until he gets a card worth 3 treasure or more, and trashes that card.

The hybrid victory point cards are really nice.

I like the witch and the militia.  For other people to have.  I can adjust my strategy and it makes my opponents take useless moats.

I dislike the annoying cards like the thief and the spy.

I'm not a fan of the spy either, but I find if someone's using a thief strategy, it's actually pretty easy to grab one thief as an addendum to your own strategy and just rape theirs.

There are so many awesome cards in the expansion!

Steward and Torturer are awesome.

Steward lets you trash cards and torturer lets them choose how to suffer(that makes it more fun).

I have a newfound appreciation for the moneylender.  It led me on to win several games at Gen Con.

I played Dominion for the first time today and loved it.

Laboratory
'Cause options in-hand are always nice.

Cards that disappoint me:
Gardens
Chapel
Witch

The first two necessitate that any player that doesn't get to the cards first, have to choose a specific strategy to counteract them, or they will likely lose.
Chapel is actually banned in a few games, because it is really really powerful.
I have to agree.  I like Laboratory because it's really a free-roll.  You keep getting two cards every time you draw one, which is also a nice way to mitigate getting several Provinces in your deck near the end game.  I think I had something like six Labs in my deck the last game we played and I didn't regret it.

I agree about the Witch in that it doesn't synergyze well with much.  It costs you a precious action, but at least you can draw two cards.  If you're playing in a game where you can pick up several actions in a turn, the the Witch might be better.  I might have a biased opinion because we also had a Chapel in the game, so getting rid of curses wasn't that hard.

My cousin ran an interesting combo using Labs, a few Woodcutters, and a Chapel to prune his deck down to not much more than Gold, Labs, and a couple of Woodcutters to get a few extra buys in.  Once he had it well established, he could pretty much cycle through his entire deck (ten or so cards) and buy up a couple Providences a turn.  He quickly had double everyone else's score.

Fun game!  I'm going to have to get it this Christmas.
