Polymorph on an Artificer
« on: June 01, 2009, 10:59:57 AM »
Ok Lets say I wanted to use polymorph on an Artificer, options are scrolls at low levels. But up high can I make a infinite wand of it?(Number of times a day, I know these wands exist but don't remember where they are at or how much they cost) also is there a way to get something stronger than polymorph such as shape change without multiclassing?

Eternal Wands is what you're probably thinking about. They're in the Eberron Campaign Setting and reprinted in MIC.

Only problem with that is that they can only store up to 3rd level spells.

Scepters might work though (Lost Empires of Faerun). Still, if you want an 'infinite' supply, you'll have to come up with a way to use one without actually consuming a charge.
There are some tricks for stuff like that IIRC, but I'm AFB right now, so I'm not entirely sure.

As for Shapechange, I'm not sure, but there might be a Staff with that somewhere?

They hold up to 3rd. Hmmm maybe a legacy item but that be hard to work past dm. Btw random thought, craft rune circle (anything awesome) on a slab of iron, shrink item, put in pocket. Unshrink, eat cheese, and enjoy the Portable medlab(with vigor circle).

Can't I make an item familar with Warforged sub level and give it polymorph x number times a day as per intelligent item? I'm new to making items so I struggle to find this in my books.

Well, technically you can make custom magic items, such as a Polymorph x times per day.

The rules for that are in the back of the DMG, but I'd advice you to consult with your DM about that.

Phylactery of Change seems to be best answer but dm may not go for it.

1) Buy a normal wand of Polymorph with one charge left.
2) Use the Power Surge infusion on it.
3) ?
4) Profit.

This costs 20 XP, but that's like almost nothing...

Or even better, make it a Staff with Polymorph and any other buff spells you expect to use regularly, so you can get the most out of those temporary charges.

As an artificer, a really good gig would be to make charged items for people, but as part of your bargain with them, require that they give you the item back when it only has 1 charge left. You could even reduce the price a bit, to make it a good deal for all parties involved (except the DM :D ).

[spoiler]
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

Another option are Minor Schema from Magic of Eberron. 1/day scrolls of up to 6th level spells.

As an added bonus, if you pimp out your UMD, by 13th level you should be able to to get a persistent Draconic polymorph (16 (ranks)+15 magic item+5 cha+2 circlet of persuasion+2 Artisan Bonus for having Craft Minor Schema+ 3 skill focus +10 for taking 10. If you can't get a custom +UMD item, or want to skip some feats, you can grab Guidance of the Avatar instead from a wand.

Of course, you're kind of stuck with staffs if you want the higher hitdice forms, or forms you can't walk around all day in.

A better route to consider is a scepter of Draconic Polymorph, in conjunction with Power Surge.  It's higher level, but has the advantage of being Persistable, whereas Polymorph isn't.

What about a custom wondrous item of polymorph at will?
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

Too expensive, if priced properly.  One thing people tend to forget is that the charts are a SECONDARY rule for creating items; the primary rule is to price the item according to power.

Right, which is why you should use the magic trap crafting rules, which don't include that pesky disclaimer  :smirk
