I sense... a great power...
« on: May 14, 2009, 10:52:19 AM »
 :)

New Skill: Sense Power (Wis, trained only)

Check:
CauseSense Power DC
Base DC0
Stronger creature near target-5
Target is in combat-1 per Hit Die of target
Target is using spell or spell-like ability-1 per level of spell
Target is using barbarian rage or similar ability-2
Target has levels in NPC classes exclusively+2
Per 5ft of distance+1

Action: Varies. Every time you have a chance to sense something in a reactive manner (such as when someone casts a spell or you move into a new area), you can make a Sense Power check without using an action. Trying to sense something you failed to sense previously is a standard action.

A fascinated creature takes a -4 penalty on Sense Power checks made as reactions.

A ranger gains a bonus on Sense Power checks when using this skill against a favored enemy.

New Skill: Conceal Power (Wis, trained only)

Check: Your Conceal Power check is opposed by the Sense Power check of anyone who might detect you.

Action: Varies. Normally, concealing your power does not require an action. However, as a standard action you can willfully suppress your power. As long as this seal lasts you gain a +5 bonus on Conceal Power checks but become fatigued. If you are placed in danger you must make a DC 20 Will save or release the seal involuntarily.

Didn't they put a version of the Sense Motive skill that let's you estimate the CR of the encounter in Complete Warrior? If so, what's the point of this skill?

It lets you "see" things from a distance, even if you're locked in lead room and the other guy is invisible.

It's thematic for some campaigns.

I like. It could specially help to give the players a sense of impending doom. "You sense a great power coming from the north. It seems far more vast than the powers of your companions combined and, naturally, you have no means of determining whether it's for good or evil. What do you do?"

I never have enough skill points to satisfy me as it is. Adding new skills to the game doesn't help that (unless you also give everyone more skill points...).

Also, what is the base DC? All you have listed are modifiers. What if you want to sense the power of someone who is a bit weaker than you are, and who has no ranks in Conceal Power? What if they were a bit stronger than you?

It is an interesting idea, but I'd just make it automatic, and add a feat that lets them conceal their power using Bluff, or something.

Speaking of my little example, maybe you could add an option for determining the "nature" of the power (Good, Evil, undead, outsider-like, etc.)?

What about.... using old skills in new ways?

Ever heard of Skill Tricks?

How about just allowing people to make these kinds of sensings with the usual skills at any time?

I like the idea...as a skill trick that works for Spellcraft(magical)/Sense Motive(martial), with a penalty for using them across categories.

Mind you, the above image is after he takes a spear made out of electricity that was the size of a 3-story house through his torso.

Long, Spoilerific explanation enclosed, don't read if you care about stories being spoiled.
The main character in the above motivator is Jack Rakkan. To put it lightly, the guy can give SS7 Gogeta a run for his money.

No, seriously, there are spoilers below. Big ones.

Fine. Don't say I didn't warn you.

The story introduces him by having him swing a sword the size of a skyscraper. One-handed.

He later creates an energy attack that misses the original target and blows up a nearby mountain in it's entirety. Let me repeat that: He blew up a mountain on accident. By missing with an attack.

When he fights Negi, the first attack he does is mistaken for a terrorist attack because every building within a city block feels an earthquake.

Major spoilers for the big fight below, don't read any further if you haven't gotten this far and care about the ending.

Negi gets the brilliant idea to use one of Jack's own punches to power a spell and try to take Jack out in one attack. This results in the spear mentioned above. The motivator is what happens after he survives that attack.
