I believe it's humanoids and giants only.

Which is why you make that Anthropormorphic Wolf into a Half-Ogre, so that it counts as a Giant as well as it's other types. You then make it a Dire Werewolf.

This gives you a wolf-man that turns into a LARGER wolf-man, at the cost of absurd LA.

Care to point me to a half-ogre template?  Half-Ogre is a race in Races of Destiny

Crystal Keep lists it as DR 313 p 94.

Can be added to giant, humanoid, or monstrous humanoid.

+2 NA, +4 Str, -2 Int, -2 Cha.

+1 CR/LA only if size increases.

Is target is small/medium, increases by one size, gains +10 speed (CK notes that it gains modifiers appropriate to size increase, but they make the same note about the half-minotaur, and we know how that stands).

Gains 60' darkvision.

Is considered Giant as well as base creature type.

I'm keeping this guide free of Dragon Magazine, it would work though.

Is it really legal to have swarm as base animal for lycanthrope? IIRC you do not gain any subtype of the animal you assume (except Aquatic subtype), which would make any swarm lycanthropes (thematic reasons aside) unviable to play if at all.

The exact text from the SRD of the template and it makes no mention of subtypes whatsoever, it just says that the type of the lycanthrope doesn't change.  So by RAW I see nothing illegal.

Alternate Form ability's text makes it clear that: "The creature retains the type and subtype of its original form. It gains the size of its new form. If the new form has the aquatic subtype, the creature gains that subtype as well.". It seems to me that unfortunately (I do really like the idea of Swarm lycanthrope too...) you won't be gaining that Swarm subtype :(

Sad, ain't it?

You're right.  Well that puts a damper on things.

Maybe add links to the were-X monster classes, for those who start at level 5 but want to be a natural were-tiger? I think they made were-bear, were-wolf, and were-tiger (plus lich and such in the same articles)...

If a DM allows LA buy-off, the Werewolf savage progressions are useless, right?

No. They're even better. You can buy off each LA as a LA+1.  :lol

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.

I think the basic idea was good, allowing for 'pseudo-lycanthropes' at lower levels (plus some interesting RP options as your character goes through his transformation as he levels), they just forgot about some possible abusive tricks (as is usually the case with WotC :P).
