At our table, sometimes it happens that the DM says, e.g., "everyone, roll a fortitude save", then looks in the book or somewhere studying the DC or effects. Meanwhile, players roll. If the roll is OK, players yell the number. If the roll sucks, a player might grab the die again, wait for the DM to look up from his notes, and then throw again, in front of his eyes. This is kind of tolerated.

Also, I have a wooden 6sided die and I have hammered a piece of a metal nail into the number one. But it ain't really working :(

Damn Surreal how OLD ARE YOU? (... guy probbably calculates thaco with an abacus too...)

My standard response to that is "Old enough to know better, but still young enough to not give a damn."

Hmm, I remember New Kids on the Block when they were still new kids on the block. Oh, and who remembers New Edition?

Cheating? Nah. It's not my style and it ruins the game for everyone else. I've made good faith mistakes before, like thinking a character had evasion when they didn't(Multiclass scout build that was a level away, oops) or miscalculated a save or BAB value. None of these have ever been a big deal, fortunately. I've also fudged things once as the DM, though this was in response to me making a screwup behind the screen. Killing an innocent PC because I made a mistake or giving them a chance? Not a hard call.

:( Alas, as much as i bitch about cheating players in my own games i have cheated on occasion. but only when i've had an extraordinary streak of bad rolling, i might fudge a die roll just to make myself feel better, or when my failure will have dire impact on the rest of the group, like being caught in an explosion cause i botched a roll planting a bombor something, i'd let it ride if it was just me in trouble tho.

How many of us can honestly say that they rolled that Str 18/00 on their stat sheet?  :smirk

I rolled an 18/00 in Baldur's gate on my 500th or so roll =P

To be fair though, I was there at the RPGA when my friend got an 18/00 on his fighter, and the whoops of joy from the players there echoed around the block :D

I was never so lucky.  The closest I got was 18/96, but I wasn't complaining. :p

A few times I have wandered to a group of players I knew nothing about with a well-optimized character only to find out the others were hopelessly subpar. In those cases I often reduce my plusses when I roll as to not outshine the others. Also, with my regular group we have something of a competition every single time a die lands leaning to something and it is always so that the players claim a reroll if the roll is not satisfactory...

I can; my d100 was biased toward the 100, away from the 1.

Does asking to keep the roll when the DM revises the actions of a round so my amazing saving throw isn't needed, count as cheating?  What about adding up the numbers incorrectly as a DM so that Ensign Redshirt won't have to make his 3rd new character of the night?

Weighted dice certainly counts as cheating. Just ask any Casino. ;)

I've been accused of cheating twice, on a 4e encounter thread that's going on right now, at gleemax.
I'm just citing the rules. The DMG is now "cheating" ... oh boy.

Once.  Once in thirty-eight years.

The rest of the character absolutely sucked.  Judging by his stats, he was an accident-prone hemophiliac with no willpower, the intellect of a brain-damaged caterpillar, and the personality of a leprous rhinoceros in heat...but, by gum, he had 18/00 strength!

I once made a character build that I later found out was illegal, that I then never told the GM about (I assumed that since Elocater had a +3 BAB minimum, Spring attack couldn't possibly be higher than that...)

I also am sadly prone to *ahem* making multiple characters before deciding on one, rolling stats each time. Due to this temptation, I've made a few characters with 32 pt buy when we're supposed to roll, making a few numbers that I'll never boost odd to alleviate suspicion.

Hmmm... I only ever played AD&D on the computer, and there I sure spent a lot of time rolling.

With our first 3.5 sessions, which was when I started playing D&D, having limited myself to some other games before, we used to roll stats, using something like six batches of rolls, normally, while I sometimes still refused to play even after 12 batches, because I couldn't have a character with at least two 18s and nothing under 10. :)

My very first character ever had 18/93, but that's the best I've ever gotten.

I did try to cheat once... I'd been having some bad rolls, and I failed an important save.  I half-heartedly rerolled it, but announced the original total after a knowing look from the DM.

I've one time misrepresented the true value of an item I was creating... namely using the summon monster spell ruling to have the spell count as one lower version of summon monster for ever decrease in size... I had a ring that could summon a diminuative rust monster for a round... It proved that wizards are better lockpicks than thiefs.
A player once asked me if there was any way to make a Tarrasque more evil... 3 sessions later he was stoned with D20s as the PC led an exidus out of the path of a Dire Tarrasque of Legendary Wonder.

I've fudged the rules to avoid a TPK as the DM. It was, however, due to a horrible decision earlier on my part. I wasn't shielding the players from their own mistakes; I was shielding them from mine.  :blush
That's almost a requirement as a DM from time to time, I think.

Also, I blame horribly badly edited modules.
