Have you ever cheated while playing D&D?
« on: May 01, 2009, 05:31:53 PM »
So, this is the char op board.  It's for working within the rules of the game to make a powerful character.  But has there ever been a point where - as the player in a D&D game - you have cheated?

Personally, I've cheated by not telling my DM that Natural Spell doesn't let a druid talk in animal form, and having my druid talk with the other PCs and NPCs while still being a winged triceratops with a Scottish accent.

I admit, I have unintentionally cheated by reading something wrong or thinking something worked the way I wanted it to, but it turned out that was not the case.  But in those cases, the second I saw the truth laid before me I stopped "cheating".  Most of my group has done similar things, although with one of them I feel he's more in the actual cheating region than simply misreading or recalling incorrectly.

I have never, when faced with an immutable rules text, simply ignored it or did the contrary.  What's the point of optimizing within the rules if you're just going to break them anyways?

That's not cheating. That's making a mistake. I've done that, but never cheated that I recall. I used to game with a guy who constantly tried to cheat, though. It was (almost) funny.

cheating used to be a huge issue in our group, we had a few players who always managed to roll 18+ for every roll. One of the DM's actually encourages it by looking the other way if you have just had some horrible rolls for the past while and wanted to actually do something with your character.

As far as cheating myself, i guess you could say so.  There have been instances that i intentionally told the DM i botched a roll for a critical miss and then told them the number for the effect i wanted on our crit miss chart but those were instances of me shutting down another player who we all knew was cheating (i would end up hitting them with a KO hit so they would not mess up the fight). I have also lied about rolls when the DM screwed up and threw too tough of monsters at the group and didn't know how to get out of the situation, this was the same kind of cheating in that i made eye contact with the DM and had one of those unspoken conversations about what i was doing.

So in short yup but i don't cheat to make myself or my character look good i would do it to help the DM and in some cases save the game.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

Some call it cheating... I call it role playing  ;)

Actually no.

EDIT: Actually, I constantly find myself counter-cheating AND pointing out places where people mess up the rules.

As the player? Not intentionally. In my earlier games I assumed my character knew more than the DM believed my character knew. But that's just bad roleplaying.
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

Back when I was in middle school playing AD&D, I would fudge die rolls on occasion, but I blame that on being a dumb kid.  :p
The DM giveth and the rogue taketh away.
I have a 5 in Charisma and Diplomacy is a cross-class skill.  Hopefully I don't piss off too many people.

I once had intentionally forgot a few rules to allow me to use a bag of holding as a parasuit.
A player once asked me if there was any way to make a Tarrasque more evil... 3 sessions later he was stoned with D20s as the PC led an exidus out of the path of a Dire Tarrasque of Legendary Wonder.

As a player i have never cheated, but i must admit that i have made a lot of mistakes xD
As a DM, i always cheat. A monster delivering a killing blow might miss, but another enemy might succeed hitting my players :p

When you say cheating... do you mean playing Wizard or Cleric? In that case.... Yes, I have cheated.
OOC-well for that matter he could just ride on my sword, that's about 15' ;)

:lmao What does a cheesy early entry Sorcerer/Anima Mage/Ur-Priest who permanently possesses a war troll count as, then? I might have to revise my answer.  :smirk

Hmm... I don't generally cheat. I go to the DM and say "This rule sucks, let's change it". :).

I've fudged the rules to avoid a TPK as the DM. It was, however, due to a horrible decision earlier on my part. I wasn't shielding the players from their own mistakes; I was shielding them from mine.  :blush

Well, way back in the day when I first got into D&D, I might or might not have rigged some stat rolls for my first character that had rolled 16 Str, 18 Dex, 16 Con, 18 Int, 14 Cha and like 14 Wis. Once I learned to play though? No need.

Silly goose! I'm pretty sure the DMG explicitly states that it's okay to fudge rolls from time to time because the game is more about having fun than the dice.

I usually do high-powered (but low magic) campaigns, so when I DM I allow the players to reroll as much as they want... as long as they actually roll. But most people get tired enough after getting 12,13,14,12,16,18 a few times that they stop.

But cheating? Nah. I have saved a player as a DM from death (too hard a monster) once or twice.

Cheating is such a strong, bad-sounding word... 0:)

How many of us can honestly say that they rolled that Str 18/00 on their stat sheet?  :smirk
