Zounds and Confusion - Game Thread
« on: April 03, 2009, 05:56:35 PM »
This is Sharn, the City of Towers. Here skyscrapers reach towards the azure sky, and thousands upon thousands of people work, live, and recover from the Last War. Countless stories are being written here, but right now, your attention is not focused on that.

It's a little known fact that Sharn is built in a manifest zone linked to Syrania, the Plane of Azure Sky. This manifest zone enhances flight magic, and is part of the reason the city stays intact. Without it, the towers couldn't stand, the wealthy neighborhood of Skyway would fall to the ground, and the city's transportation would plummet--much like the airship you are on is doing.

Despite the best efforts of the pilot and crew, the elemental bound to the ring around the ship appears to have gone dormant. Luckily, the ship is made of soarwood, a very light material, and you are not above anything that is extremely high. Unluckily, that means you just have farther to fall.

As the airship starts to hurtle towards the ground, several of the passengers decide that now is the time for heroics...or for self-preservation, whichever comes first.

Welcome to Eberron.

Christian_Assman takes out his "Folding Boat"
"Womand Cord! Womand Cord"
The boat opens twice, creating a 24 foot long ship- including a sail.
Christian_Assman unriggs the sail and secures himself to the airship.
"Someone strong, you there- fighter, hold fast to the other end of the sail and ship, we'll glide down to land".

Lys looks around, decides there's nothing to do, and sticks a leg out to catch the fool running around screaming.

Krim moves towards the helm, glancing around to the crew members. "Alright, what do we need to do to keep this thing from dropping out of the sky?"

Lucilius glances at Christian, then, ripping his overcoat off, grabs the other end of the sail, exposing his impossibly large biceps.

Lucilius and Christian both grab the sails, the former gritting his teeth and the latter squeaking slightly. The sail billows outward, slowing the ship's fall somewhat, but not to an entirely safe speed.

Nevitash runs around in an undignified manner until a changeling standing nearby idly sticks out a foot, causing the kalashtar to crash to the deck in a heap.

Krim attracts the attention of one of the crew members, who shouts, "The helmsman can't get the elemental to respond, something may be wrong with the ring! If you're any good with that stuff, get the hell over to the bindings!", and gestures to the trapdoor near the center of the deck.
Diplomacy check, Ari.
Krim makes his way to the trapdoor, opening it quickly. "Well, I'll do my best."

Krim wrenches open the trapdoor, revealing the chamber at the precise center of the elemental ring. Several dragonshards are positioned on top of a complicated apparatus.
Spellcraft check to determine how the machine works, and a Use Magic Device check to activate it.
Christian shouts at the crowd to come and help, but they seem more concerned with holding onto various portions of the ship tightly.

Krim's practiced eyes quickly identify the machine's various parts and functions. The artificer reaches out for one of the dragonshards, then shrugs and gives the machine a good sharp kick in a certain spot. The dragonshards begin to glow, and a faint roar can be heard. Above deck, the elemental ring bursts into flame again and begins to rotate. Though the airship slows further, it's apparent that the ring won't be enough to stop the impact.
You're fairly certain that the ring's connection to the manifest zone has been disrupted. It's possible that if you can get the ring to absorb energy (particularly fire) from another source, you could set the ship down relatively safely.
Krim thinks for a moment before glancing around, pointing at the crazy one who was running around. "You there, get over here and help me. You look like the type who can get this thing started with your powers."
Krim, make a Reflex save, DC 20. If you succeed, you can redirect the energy into the ring before it harms anyone (since you're already at the control mechanism).
Krim's eyes widen as he sees Nevitash narrow his eyes and the air start to shimmer. He yanks open an access panel and rams two relays into contact just as the flames erupt from the kalashtar. The air around the ring distorts weirdly and sucks all the fire into itself, creating a vacuum that nearly knocks Christian and Lucilius from their feet. The two manage to maintain their grip on the sail, however, and the ring spins faster, propelling the ship upward just in time to turn what would have been a bonebreaking crash into a rough landing, culminating in the airship toppling lamely onto one side. The ring's glow fades to black, and the shaken passengers start to stand.

Lucilius strides confidently towards the captain, brushing off his clothes as he goes.

"You there! Yes, you, Mr. Captain, sir. You're damn lucky you had a few skilled adventures on board," Lucilius says, gesturing to Christian, Krim and Nevitash, "especially ones that know about rings and flying hunks of wood, all that wizardy gib'rish. What the hell causes something like that?"
