Cutscene 1 - PC Selection - PLEASE READ
« on: April 03, 2009, 04:23:50 AM »
ALPHA COMPLEX. HGP SECTOR. DEEP 13 ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE. 1825 HOURS.

The evening part of the daycycle leaves offices dark, lights dimmed just enough to let the INFRARED custodial staff blunder their way past desks and tables without seeing what they're not supposed to. The lady in BLUE never really thought about such things. Anyone or anything not GREEN or higher was none of her concern - she earned that arrogance a long time ago. Continuing to tap away at her desktop terminal, the soothing white noise of soft tapping was split by the door opening, a shadowy INDIGO suit leaning in.

"Trix, I expect you know why I've interrupted your quiet," boomed a deep, male voice.

She nodded without speaking, designer glasses pitching slightly down her face, her expression stone-cold and confident, but hinting a moment of worry.

"Then you know what's at stake. The thing we thought would not happen, just happened. I need you to handle this as discretely as possible."

She again nodded, fingers stretching on her desk, awaiting more furious typing. Eyes looked impatient, expectant. The INDIGO executive reached inside his suit pocket, causing the lady in BLUE to twitch momentarily, as if old habits died hard. Pulling something out of his pocket, he flung it underhanded towards her desk, which she caught with a raised grasp. Opening her hand in front of her desk lamp, she confirmed what her tactile senses told her; it was a memory stick.

The INDIGO started to leave and close the door behind him, but stopped to speak once more. "Pick me 6. They fail, and you bet your ass I'll make you GREEN with envy. Off the team, and back to running IR test groups. You don't want that, do you?"

She maintained her stoicism in the face of higher authority and shook her head no.

"Don't fuck this up," he spoke as the door closed.

The lady in BLUE exhaled loudly and slotted the memory stick in a port on the side of the terminal. She tapped her finger on the touch-sensitive screen until an ORANGE window appeared, full of text and low-quality photos:

PROFILE 1 Caelic
Works for the service firm "We Want You", an Armed Forces firm that recruits citizens for the Vulture Squadron.
Has the rank of Sergeant in the Armed Forces, with the "Fightin' 37th (Infantry)".
Daily job consists of scouting REDs and INFRAREDs in public places, handing out AFVS brochures, and getting names/IDs for "callbacks". (The word "shanghai" is silent.)

PROFILE 2 Solo
Works for the service firm "SpaceSavers EDS", a Central Processing Unit firm that scans and stores printed / non-electronic information.
Daily job consists of taking stacks of records and documents and feeding them into scanning machines. Sometimes has to lug portable versions of equipment out to where the papers are and do it remotely.

PROFILE 3 woodenbandsman
Works for the service firm "Morning Boo Crew", a Housing Preservation & Development / Mind Control firm that coordinates "Public Hating".
Daily job consists of organizing groups of lower-clearance citizens via megaphone for purposes of shaming traitors who are sentenced to public censure.

PROFILE 4 smudgyhandsman
Works for the service firm "SecuriClean", an Internal Security firm that provides custodial services for Termination Centers and Confession Booths.
Daily job consists of performing routine field maintenance on confession booths, which is less about replacing wiring, and more about cleaning floor drains clogged with human effluent.

PROFILE 5
Works for the service firm "Armchair Generals", a Production firm (of PLC) that makes quality furniture for high-clearance citizens.
Daily job consists of managing an assembly line of INFRARED and RED employees assemble couches. It's amazing how easily they get injured sewing pleather.

PROFILE 6 Chemus
Works for the service firm "Swingvolt", a Power Services firm that is consulted on matters of "Power Oscillation" - how to ration power out to places that need it, and restrict it in places that don't.
Daily job consists of constantly reconfiguring power transmission feeds in sector to reduce waste (in a sense, remotely shutting power off to rooms and buildings when demand drops below a minimum level).

PROFILE 7
Works for the service firm "VeggieMax", a Research & Design firm that deals in "Agricultural Upgrade Engineering".
Daily job consists of cataloging several square-blocks-worth of hydroponic greenhouses and noting the growth rate of chemically-enhanced produce. Specific duties and training apply to the crop of blackberry/pumpkin hybrids, which have been affectionately called "blumpkins", because the name "puckberries" didn't test as well in focus groups.

PROFILE 8 emissary666
Works for the service firm "The Verminators", a Tech Services firm that handles pest extermination.
Daily job consists of training INFRARED and RED flunkies about efficient use of equipment, especially the T1000X PesticideThrower. Also has to document every case of self-inflicted poisoning and "thrower-induced injury" that happens with alarming regularity.

(OOC - Players, please use this thread to calmly and respectfully decide amongst yourselves, in OOC fashion, who will be playing which profile. Notice that there are 8 profiles, so two will go unpicked. Have fun!)

I'd like to go with either 4 or 6; the ability to turn people's power off looks like it could be abused very nicely encourage responsible management, but being a plumber in a post-apocalyptic utopian society seems just nifty too.

I'd like Profile 4 if that's ok with Chemus.

I'm cool with that. I have no clue what will actually be useful, but those two looked handy/flavorful without needing knowledge of how things work.

Ninja edit: So, I'll take Profile 6.

At this point, Caelic and emissary666 are the only conflicts we have remaining. No rush (seriously), but just as a reminder. Once choices have been made, I'll send you each your character sheets via PM. As stated in the rules, feel free to expand on their appearance and backgrounds with the information you're given. A few more pieces of Alpha Complex culture/lore you might be interested in as you go about this:

How Babby Is Formed - The Alpha Complex Version

Alpha Complex citizens do not start with a Clearance, did you know that? No sir! It all begins when a male citizen and a female citizen love each other very much, they then share the same sleeping quarters, kiss each other in a special way, and start to wrestle...

...and then are arrested by IntSec and terminated for illegal sexual activity.

Meanwhile, a Tech Services cloning firm (in cooperation with CPU who catalogs every citizen's identity, including their genome) is given a monthly quo################erate, to compensate for fatality rates (citizens whose credit is too low and cannot pay for additional clones, or traitors who either are deemed incurable or who were sentenced to Erasure). ###############eptitiously extracted during routine med######### from a pair of citizens who are "matched" fo###################ulting embryo(s) are incubated in a womb-like container similar to a clone vat for approximately 9 months. Once "decanted", these lifeforms are legally declared "Junior Citizens".

Junior Citizens

Junior Citizens (who have the designation [firstname]-JC-[sector]-#) are raised in communal creches, entire portions of sectors that are blocked off only to high-clearance personnel, and HPDMC employees of that particular creche. A combination of human caretakers and "teacherbots" raise and educate the children, channeling their nascent emotional impulses into healthy obedience and absolute loyalty to the Computer and Alpha Complex.

Still, kids are kids. Up until the age of 14, Junior Citizens are confined to the creches (except for the rare field trip), and are largely unmedicated (their biology is still developing and would be at risk). This means the little shits get into all sorts of trouble, as pre-teens and teens often do...with little or no repercussions.

Why? Because even though a Junior Citizen is technically an INFRARED, The Computer considers them a precious resource - the future of Alpha Complex - and so even an ULTRAVIOLET High Programmer would carefully consider snitching on a Junior Citizen who happened to bury his original-press vinyl copy of The Beatles' White Album under a gooey pile of Toothpaste Supplement #5.

At age 12, the education for Junior Citizens becomes more formalized, and standard tests are administered on a regular basis, which give an idea of the youth's natural aptitudes. Once they reach the age of 14, they are assigned to a short-handed firm in the service group for which their test results have placed them, and officially promoted to INFRARED status (and all the "benefits" such a promotion bestows). They are now fair game.
