I can't say that I know how well it was searched, Sir Suuru. That isn't really my department. The tall captain explains with a shrug.  I also don't know the details behind why the rubble wasn't cleared and construction on a new tower started, either.  At that, Captain Stonewall reaches up and scratches his head for a second, clearly confused.

He shakes his head, clearing his focus before readdressing the group.  Well now you know the story of Silkur.  Would you like to stay the night here and head for the Aged Forest in the morning, or are you all ready to leave now?  Almost as an afterthought, he turns back to Suuru, And I will see what I can do about setting up an appointment for you with the scribes upon your return.[spoiler]It is early afternoon, approximately 2:00pm by your best guesses[/spoiler]

I feel like something is amiss in this story, and the Council seem really in a hurry to send us off... The situation must be somehow critical

Well, I guess it is almost safe to assume this is not Silkur's revenge after all... Then what is it? We know nothing at this point. Says Dalcyrr, talking to no one in particular. After a long pause he turn to face Stonewall.

Can we interrogate the man from before, Captain? The one who came screaming and started all this.

Then watching Suuru, he adds
Every bit of information could be critical. We need to know what we are about face, afterall.

And knowing something more about our companions and patrons can't be a bad thing, too...

Travel is a great way to leave behind a troubled past indeed, barely a pause this time, Dusk.

Ah, Turen, you're from a coastal town yourself? So you must know all about the things they do here.

Malachi eyes the abbey and it's courtyard while the others talk such lovely architecture, it's so sad it was destroyed as a political attack against a mage that had done so much for the community, then finally, looking as if some important revelation has come to him from his examining, he turns back to Captain Stonewall and begins to speak, his words almost casual, though said in a practiced haste that eliminates any non-intentional pauses and allows no room for a response without actual interruption.

Malachi smiles wide and nods knowingly to the rest of the volunteers, making a slight bow back towards the Town Hall as he steps aside, graciously indicating that he will follow as they head to the discussion with the scribes.

[common] My bet is that the wizard is probably innocent. I agree that we should start investigating this story here and then move to the wilderness, even though i'm eager to visit the forest. I think that extra information about that meeting would be extremely helpful.

After a small pause, Dusk adds speaking softly:

[common] Could you point us to the right man captain?

We all know nothing at this point, Sir Dalcyrr, the Captain begins.  That's why the council sought help.  If the death of young Talyn Marn was merely an accident or some freakish coincidence, our town will sleep much better at night. However, if what has happened is truly a result of Silkur... The tall man drifts off, allowing your imaginations to flow.

He pauses and scratches his head for a moment at Dalcyrr's inquiry.  I don't see why you can't talk to him before you go.  I'll see what I can arrange and either bring him to you all at the inn or have someone fetch you all if he is bedridden.

As Malachi begins to speak, Stonewall nods in agreement. I'd probably want to leave in the morning, too.  At least they're a dedicated seeming bunch.  His nodding quickly stops as his eyes almost seem to bulge out at the swarm of questions Malachi spews forth.  Whew. He exclaims as he unconsciously wipes his forehead. That was a lot of questions there, Sir Malachi.  Can't rightly say I can answer most of them questions.  You see, I wasn't at the emergency council meeting, nor at their deliberations. The council does that kind of stuff in private.  Not much I can say about Talyn Marn either, seeing as I didn't know the young man personally.  About all I can say is that Silkur honestly didn't utter a word the entire time I was escorting him out of town.

Captain Stonewall pauses to think for a minute before continuing. I don't know who really to point you towards, Sir Dusk. Just about everyone in town knew Silkur and almost no one disliked him. Although that was back then, so I don't know how eager people will be to talk about him.  If you're looking for information on the young Talyn Marn, though, he had to have been a member of the carpenter's guild. I'd start asking there. They're on the southwest side of town, just north of the gate.

Okay, so that seems settled. I'll either bring the woodsman by the inn after dinner or have a soldier fetch you to him.  I wish you all the best of luck in your investigations. He takes a moment to give each member a firm, thankful handshake.
The cake is a lie.

Not at the meeting? Then how did you know their expressions during it, good Captain Stonewall? *

Malachi smiles nonetheless, a wide, friendly grin, as he shakes Captain Stonewall's hand, then bows slightly and bids him farewell until they meet again, whether that be in the inn or in the morning before they depart. Once he has left, Malachi turns back to the others, taking off his floppy, wide-brimmed purple hat and quickly tying his gleaming, knee-length hair back with a length of crimson sash that he pulls from one of the many pouches hanging from his belt.

I think, perhaps, best if some of us head to find out about Talyn Marn from the carpenter's guild. As well as what they know of his companion. Meanwhile, others of us should see about those records... We should have time to examine them before the meeting with the injured man after dinner. And I'm sure they would be more than willing to allow us to take some with us to examine into the night and through the interview if we must.

Turen, Tiv, and Suuru Tyelka should search for and through the records. Turen, I trust your eyes are as quick as your feet, and I would bet you're quite good at finding the, heh... smallest detail, especially if it hides some trinket. Malachi grins wickedly and continues. But you, Tiv, have spoken hardly a word, and I believe a more verbose tactic will be of most benefit in the Carpenter's Guild. Also, Suuru Tyelka, you seem to know best what should be found within the actual records.

As well, keep an eye out for any information you can about the Council itself, especially the newest member. Something is suspicious with one so young and in contrast to the others gaining leadership so shortly before such a tragedy befalls the town and rids it of it's beloved spell weaver who has done nothing but work towards it's defense.

Dusk, hardly even a skipped beat now, Dalcyrr Llalee, and myself should head to the Carpenter's Guild, to interview the people there about Talyn Marn and the injured man, as well as to gather information about the Aged Forest and what we can expect to find within.

By dinner, we can meet back at the marvelous inn with the knowledge we've acquired, ready to interview the man about his experience, and deliberate on how our journey in the morning will progress.

So then, Malachi smiles again at the others and drops the hat back on his head with a bit of a flourish

"So, did the council actually have any evidence that Silkur did this?  Coz it seems to me that he was stitched up, understandable if he was mad enough at you to send whatever this creature was."

The Captain opened his mouth to begin a reply but Turen continued his monologue before the words could come out.

"But, we're not being paid to moralise about things, check on the records you say Malachi?  I can do that."  Drawing his cloak close about his shoulders he started off down the street, "Are you coming then you two?  Let's get out of this damned heat, how you southerners stand it I'll never know."

Tiv follows Turen and Suuru down the street for a while. Once they are out of earshot, he turns to Suuru, ignoring Turen, and says in a low voice Do you sense it, elf? Someone is manipulating this town, though be it through words or wizardry I do not know... the story seems to implode at the slightest inspection. Malachi will be a worthy ally in this - if he keeps prodding, we may be able to draw the mastermind out.

It is clear to Malachi that Captain Stonewall is telling a half truth. He was at the meeting, but he seems to have spoken honestly when stating that he was not present at the actual deliberations to determine Silkur's fate.

Suuru acknowledges Turen, before speaking to Tiv, "I would not be so quick to put danger and malice in every shadow, there seems to have been a genuine misunderstanding...at some point."  A pause after a bit of a forced laugh and the snowy-haired elf lowers his voice continuing in a serious tone, "But something sinister is afoot--that I can agree with, Tiv, we can all air our thoughts on this matter in the privacy of a room this evening."  Another nod of acknowledgement--this time concerning Malachi--"His initiative is admirable in this matter, he seems eager to help the people of this town and find the truth of this matter--for that he has won my trust."

Quickening his stride and beckoning to the others, Suuru eagerly increases their pace to arrive at the archives.  The elf begins in a "To be honest, I am more at home in an archive hunting for fact than attempting to extract it from the locals at a taproom or guildhall."   A thoughtful pause follows, then he speaks up again, "Turen, you seem to be sociable--and I want your opinion on this as well Tiv--perhaps we should speak with some of the locals once we've arrived at the inn.  After this point our only sources of information will have been official record, high ranking councilmen, guardsmen, and a man who was attacked, and the carpenter's guild.  At least three of those could easily be tampered or bought off--maybe more.  The common folk seem more likely to be honest than anyone with a political agenda."  Suury sighs, this was quickly becoming a very tangled looking affair.  He would consider everything they learn thoroughly in this eve's reverie, for certain.

Do not be so hasty. Remember, Suuru, it was supposedly the hate of the people that drove the man away, though they had shown no such problems with him before, even when he destroyed the wall of a house...

Still, I suppose there is little else we can do.

Turen, Tiv, and Suuru begin their search for the town records.  It does not take long, as they head off in the direction, more or less, that the council was heading when the left.  Within the half hour, they reach a small section of town with very bureaucratic buildings lining the block.  After a quick inquiry, they are pointed to the town archives, a small building next to the town hall.  Upon entering the building the three see a small waiting room with a dark mahogany desk sitting opposite the entrance.  On either side of the desk, about ten feet back are doors leading off into back rooms.  At the desk sits a slim man, clearly in his middle years, with thick-rimmed glasses, pouring over a scroll.  He looks up at the three and begins to roll up the scroll. Greetings.  I don't believe I know you three. How can I help you?

Meanwhile, across town...

Dusk, Dalcyrr, and Malachi quickly make their way to the edge of town, and the Carpenter's Guild.  As they enter, what they expected to be a guildhall looks much more like a tavern than anything else.  However, this tavern seems to have an aura of quiet around it this day.  In two corners of the room, there are spiral stairs that lead both upstairs and downstairs.  In the center of the room is a large roasting pit, complete with a boar roasting slowly over the fire as two soot covered men turn the beast.  Sporadically throughout the tavern are small groups of woodsmen and other laborers eating and drinking.  Their merriment is clearly lacking today.  As the three enter the building, a shirtless dwarf clad in plaid pants stands up and slowly meanders over to the group.  It takes a moment to notice that he is shirtless, as the hair on his chest, back, and arms initially looked like a dark shirt.  He leans his head back and quickly spits into a spitoon near the small Dalcyrr.  Wiping his mouth with his beard, the dwarf returns to chewing his tobacco and looks at the three strangers for a second before his eyes widen with recognition. Hey!  I know you three.  You're part of those six guys who said they'd go into the forest.  Come, have a drink.  With that he turns and begins the walk back to his table.
The cake is a lie.

I believe you have us at a disadvantage then, friend, as, sadly, we do not know you.

Malachi nods to the others in the hall as he seats himself across from the dwarf.

But as you've likely guessed, we are here on business, about the forest and the happenings and whatnot...

So, first things first... I always find that the best way to start...

Malachi pauses and allows himself a bit of a grin.

What are we drinking today?

Dusk takes a minute to carefully look around the guild while slowly approaching the table. When he finally reaches the table, he takes a sit and nods to the dwarf. Answering to malachi's question he laconically adds:

Wine would be fine by me.

A thoughtful pause follows, then he speaks up again, "Turen, you seem to be sociable--and I want your opinion on this as well Tiv--perhaps we should speak with some of the locals once we've arrived at the inn.

"Sociable?  Me?  I prefer to stick to the shadows frankly, never did quite get the hang of dealing with you big folk.  Besides, like beard here says, I don't see much reason to trust these yokels opinions anyway, they'll probably burn us as witches just for asking.  I say we stick to the records for now, speaking of which..."

Turen puffs up his chest as they approach the archives, They think I'm the sociable one?  Well, someone better do the talking I suppose... "Ah yes, we're official deputies of the council, investigating the recent death of Talyn Marn and accusations of the involvement of one Silkur, a wizard by trade.  We'd like to see the records of the town meetings that led to his expulsion.  At once."

He began to tap his foot impatiently as he waited for the scribe to obey his commands.

Once again since I left, I got to be mindfull about my... Stature... Among this big folks

Dalcyrr thinks as he step away a little from the spitoon on the floor, hiding a little grimace of disgust, then he approach the dwarf's table while taking a good look at the common hall.

[draconic, whispering while passing near his companions] I am very sorry to say that, but we don't have the time to take a drink with every citizen who recognize us I'm afraid. I suggest to be as straightforward as possible in this matter: let's ask if he know something, or someone who know something. We still have much to do before we depart tomorrow.

Malachi's grin widens as he waits for the dwarf's answer, and he turns to Dalcyrr Llalee and responds in Draconic, his face and tone tilted as if telling a joke.

[Draconic]But of course we don't. This, however, is obviously a group that knew the unfortunate man in the woods, at least in passing, and are mourning the events of the morning. Brushing that aside so cooly would be rather insulting to them, I feel.

They are also likely to know Talyn Marn.

As well, this Dwarf obviously feels that of those currently present, he is most capable of doing any putting off of unwanted guests, as well as the greetings of those who are welcome. Obliging him will not only put all the others we may question at ease, it will also give us the best chance at getting us a meeting with anyone who possesses important information.

Besides... It's a free drink, and possibly food, which I learned long ago to never pass up. Especially when you haven't had either all day.

With a grin and a chuckle, Malachi switches back to Common and turns to the dwarf again.

It seems that, Dusk here a hand waved to indicate the 'half-dragon', would prefer wine, if it's available, but myself and Dalcyrr Llalee a nod at the gnome would like whatever you all here are already drinking on this sorrowful day.

The man in glasses watches Turen for a moment before replying. Official deputies, you say?  What are your names and when were you appointed?  His eyes clearly widened at the mention of Silkur.  He then clears his throat before continuing. However, all who wish to view any council meeting records need authorization from the Master Scribe, Elz Filrey.  Of course an appointment is needed to apply for the Master Scribe's permission.  Do you have such an appointment?

The dwarf slides his mug over to Malachi.  Here, you can have me' brandy. Not in a drinkin' mood, ya' know.  His somber face almost cracks a smile at Dusk's request.  He then turns and waves down a serving wench.  When she comes up, he waves at Dusk. Wine for the scaled one. And another brandy for the littlefolk.

Leaning down and picking up a mug off the ground, the dwarf spits again before resuming his focus on the tobacco in his mouth.  Name's Ivar Stoneaxe. What can I do fer three?  I'm guessin' yer wantin' to know about him?

Dusk turns his attention to the dwarf when he hears his words. He almost spontaneously replies:

[draconic] Too much impatience in this one!

After a pause, he adds in a less dramatic tone:

I am sorry, but i have yet to forget my clan's customs. We always drink wine to forgive the dead.
