Games for 6+ players
« on: March 22, 2009, 12:38:53 AM »
My gaming group has gotten on a board/card game kick lately.  Unfortunately there are 6-7  of us, and the majority of games we find are for 4-5 players.

Any recommendations fro games that could accommodate 6-8 people?

Apples to Apples is great pretty much no matter how many people you have, since everyone gets to participate every turn. You probably knew that one, though.

Bang!

As far as I have been told, it's out of print, but you can still order it here

It's by far my favorite fun multi-player game. It's fucking awesome. :D  Buy it, play it, thank me later. ;)

What kind of time-frame and complexity are you and your mini-mob comfortable with?

any time frame is okay.  We've played some for weeks at a time.

Complexity is variable.

If you're at all a long-duration gamer (Axis and Allies, for example), I'd recommend Twilight Imperium (3rd edition) for 6 (plays with 7-8 w/ the expansion) if you like extended playtimes and RTS-style 4X gaming, but in a board game context. It also has some neat Puerto Rico elements in it (each phase one player gets to do something special), and incorporates voting on rule-changes into the gameplay.

Risk plays well with lot of players, but there will be casualties. Plan for some folks to be out of the game at any time. Perhap have another smaller game that is available for those that are removeded from play.

Do you guys play Magic? It can be pretty fun via 2-headed giant or just regular play with many players.

And with large groups, Elder Dragon Highlander will be fun and kill lots of time.

The guys regard Magic with the same enthusiasm they do evangelist preachers, nazis, and rap music.  Which is to say tis not well liked...

8 way free for all. It's nuts. Everyone camps and the first guy to show weakness or strength gets pounced on.

The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

Robo Rally is my personal favorite, runs with up to 8 people.

Pit is another option.  It's a rather... loud game.  It's a local favorite around here, but I don't like it.

Pictionary is a classic.

I love Pit.  It's silly and light.

I adore Apples to Apples.  Definitely not just for kids.

If you're looking for a bit of strategy, I played Ricochet Robots and loved it.

Cthulhu 500 is also a ton of fun.

Did a quick search on Board Game Geek for up to 8 players-- Arkham Horror  is listed as #1.  I haven't played it yet but it got a ton of buzz.  I think it takes like all day though.

The Shab-al-Hiri Roach is a dark comedy of manners, lampooning academia and asking players to answer a difficult question - are you willing to swallow a soul-eating telepathic insect bent on destroying human civilization?

No?

Even if it will get you tenure?

From everyone I've talked to, Arkham Horror is fun, but takes forever. So enjoy it, but don't expect to get anything done that day. ;)

Ooooh I hadnt seen Ricochet RObots...

Cthulhu 500 and Arkham Horror are always faves.

Arkham Horrors rep for taking forever is generally because theres a ton of rules to memorize, and almost everyone does it wrong.  Our first time we took weeks to get it done, but once we got the rules straight its finishable in a night as long as everyone knows what they're doing and refrain from halting the game arguing about rules clarifications.

In the last game I started with a tommy gun and the Necronomicon.  Talk about your ominous portents...

On a side note I am vastly disappointed the new Conan board game has a max of 4 players...
