Star Wars
« on: March 17, 2009, 03:20:45 PM »
As some of you might know, during the past month or so I've watched the old movies and played through Knights of the Old Republic II and Force Unleashed and my Star Wars inspiration is still going wild. Do not worry, this happens to me from time to time, a topic (Marvel Comics, a certain band or whatever) can pick my fancy and then I am obsessive about it for a good while.

Anyway, what do you guys think about Star Wars?

Personally, I find the relative diversity of the galaxy and the sheer number of material quite fascinating. I used to read the comics years ago, but pretty much the only thing I remember for sure is that Darth Bane is my all time favourite character.

Again, your favourites? You hate something in particular? Any Star Wars RP behind you?

I always liked Star Wars, but I didn't get really in to it until I read the book for Star Wars Episode III.  The way the author wrote about Anakin and Obi-Wan switching up lightsabre styles on Count Dooku got me hooked.

After that, I played KoTOR II, and I've been craving playing in a tabletop version.  Problem is, I don't have any books on it, nor do I know anyone that plays that sort of thing, so I'm not gonna drop the cash just to read and yearn.

Favorite character?  Mace Windu.  The fucker is the inventor and only master of the 7th style of lightsabre combat, Vaapath.  Thats fucking cool, man.

The d20 game at least is made of suck.

Anyway, Mace Windu was pretty cool, but from what I know of the animated series, his power level was totally exaggerated, he wasn't even the best lightsaber duelist of his own time. Heck, Qui-Gonn Jin was just as good and he was, what, 20 years older? But I got to give Mace Windu some credit from coming up with the second coolest lightsaber form ever. A lot better than most Jedi Council members ever got. Like Kit Fisto, his great moment was to die before the Emperor.

Personally though, I like the times before the Empire and Palpatine a lot more than the days all the six movies were about. So many of the best characters lived way before those times. Darth Bane, Darth Plagueis, Exar Kun...

No no, Kit Fisto's greatest moment was saving Aayla Secura's life by making out with her :P

The SAGA game is a pretty good system, just started my first game here in the PbP area :)

Thing was, Windu had the Emperor beat!  Stupid fuckin Anakin had to come in and save 'em.  All of Palpatine's might was naught against Windu's combat, because he channels the dark side when he duels.  The lightning literally got sucked right back into Palpatine...

Have you ever read anything about the Heritage of the Sith?  The history of the Sith, from their point of view?  Its pretty cool, actually.

Some comics were told by the Sith, but I am not sure if they were a part of the story you say. I remember a good story line told from the perspective of Darth Bane. Damn it was cool, that guy is golden. I mean, he alone fought five Jedi Masters to a stalemate while being severely weakened before his apprectince Darth Zannah got there and then they killed the five strongest Jedi of that time? I did a bit of digging to find it again...it was in Star Wars Insider #88, an article written by Drew Karpyshyn.  I was trying to find the article online, but the best I could come up with was a torrent for it.  So.... thats up to you.  It was definitely an awesome read though, talking about how the Sith had been persecuted for thousands of years by the tyrannical Jedi and such.

As an aside, that issue had awesome cover art.

I was told to never RP star wars, because I don't have the right mindset.

I don't see the dark side as evil and the light side as good, I see them as emotion and logic, respectively.  I see them both having good and bad sides to them.  Someone called me a "greysider" or something, which I interpret as some form of insult.

Also, the Star Wars D20 race species book literally has a planet of female aliens whose sole purpose is to mate with depressed males of other species to make them feel better.  I'm not making that up.

Not to mention the fact that he's just ridiculously tough. He's constantly having someone beat the living daylights out of him or poison him or being covered by some sort of parasite, but he still manages to own everyone's face. Perfect mix of perseverance, raw power, and cunning.

Gee... that wasn't written by a depressed male geek.  :lmao

Alien Anthology, page 196.  I was mistaken though, there are males of the species that do the exact same thing.

Don't get me wrong, I whole-heartedly agree that the universe would be better off if there were people there for the express purpose of sexing up depressed people, lord knows that I would feel a lot better if I got a little attention.  But that doesn't belong in a game.

When I was a kid, my favourite movie was always Star Wars.  I had the Darth Vader lightswitch, my brother and I had PILES of the action figures and ships (which my parents sold at a frickin' garage sale  :banghead), the Empire Strikes Back bedsheets, lightsabers, everything!.

I've recently "acquired" copies of the original LaserDisc edition of The classic trilogy.  They're THX enhanced, but none of the Special Edition BS.  It feels good to watch the movies the way I remember them as a child.

I really liked the revised edition d20 game, but Saga is easily the best RP system I have yet to play.  I've been running a game for a couple friends out here, and GMing Saga is pretty easy, but recently we switched up to a new campaign, and PLAYING in Saga is just freakin' beautiful!  I'm running a Jedi Sentinel type character shortly after the Mandalorian Wars in the KotOR setting.

Pretty much the only Star Wars toy I still love (it's my friend's actually, I had none) is the Lando Calrissian miniature. To enforce my point:

I think it's because that every twi'lek female that has ever been portrayed is dressed like a whore.  Even the jedi twi'lek in the prequels.

EDIT:  And something I learned.  Samuel Jackson's lightsabre in the prequel movies had "BMF" engraved on the button to ignite the thing, short for "bad motherfucker".

You know, for years I've been saying "Hand my my lightsabre.  It's the one that says "Bad Motherfucker" on it" for years, but I didn't know it actually DID say that.

Thread necromancy strikes again. Anyway, I found a Star Wars book of my favourite character, but it was in terribly bad shape. The clerk ordered me a new one with the price of the old, battered individual. Not exactly sure why, since I wasn't complaining or anything, but this is good news.

And now when I am here:

Favorite character?  Mace Windu.  The fucker is the inventor and only master of the 7th style of lightsabre combat, Vaapath.  Thats fucking cool, man.
I believe the inventor of the form was never discovered. For example Darth Revan drops to the Vaapath ready stance when Shan and few others attacks him. That was 4000 years before Mace Windu. And at least Maul used it.

After a quick check to confirm, I can safely say that there are two variants of Form VII: Juyo, used by lightsaber wielders like Maul and the others Tshern mentions, and Vaapad, which is a variation that Mace Windu invents.
