Mad Max Style warrior
« on: May 25, 2008, 03:09:35 PM »

                      :thought

For my next game I decided to play a PC that is similar to Max but still different. so far all I have is what some of his starting equipment is and what kind of fighting style I want him to have. And Armor.

Fighting style
uses a sword and some sort of ranged attack at the same time. the ranged attack could be throwing daggers, crossbows, magic, or a warlocks eldritch blast. something along those lines. I am rather fond of the repeating crossbow option.
for his sword he uses a weapon that would be found in the dessert, like scimitars, or the great scimitar from Sandstorm. the only requirement for the sword is that it's one handed so he can do ranged things with the other hand.
as a rule of thumb, the more bad ass it looks the better.
Also does a bit of mounted combat with his nameless horse

Armor
light armor. He just came from the dessert where full plate would be the dumbest thing ever. so at most chainmail

Equipment/Transport
Mount- A horse with no Name http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDL02th72u4
Equipment- various dessert survival equipment, including a hydration suit

Books allowed
Any official 3.5 books.

House Rules
Gestalt Rules (Unearthed Arcana)
Flaws (UA) must have one

Role In group
support fire/2ndary melee/1 man cavalry/Badass

my only requirements are
keep it simple
must fit the theme

If anything else comes to mind I'll post it

To make sure you are both adequate at Melee and ranged attacks I think a dex based fighter would probably fit best.
For the ranged attack I was thinking hand crossbow and additionally the feat Hand Crossbow Focus.

However, I just thought, how about a soulknife/soulbow? Its not the strongest possible option out there. But it lets you attack reasonably well in melee and at range.

well psionics don't fit very well with the theme. I was thinking along the lines of a fighter scout combo, but skirmish doesn't work while mounted

Figther/scout can work with the Dervish PRC. That should get you the speed of a mount without actually having a mount.

Scout7/dervish10 with the TWF tree is a high dex build. But then you're probably off better using a longbow for your archery instead of an exotic crossbow because the build is very feat-hungry.

that might work except the concept is to have a ranged atk in one hand a sword in the other and be similar to max

*looks again* Gestalt? Aah.

Then I'd say warblade/wizard. Use your sword in one hand, And your other hand gets spells. Some nice INT synergy. And then you can head into gishhood.
Light armor's no problem. Twilight mithril chain or mage armor combined with other defensive buffs can help your armor class out nicely.

that might work even better.

gestalting opens up so many doors. some that should never be opened

The feat Versatile Combatant from Drow of the Underdark may work out well for this concept, as it is focused on using a rapier and a hand crossbow at the same time.

Versatile Combatant
Prerequisite: Dex15, proficiency with rapier and hand crossbow
Benefit: When you are armed with a rapier in your primary hand and a hand crossbow in your off-hand you are treated as having the twf feat for the purpose of calculating attack penalties.
In addition you do not provoke AOO's from adjacent opponents when you make ranged attacsk with a hand crossbow.

The annoying part about the feat is, you need 2 hands to reload a hand crossbow.

both are versatile enough

Wizard/warblade
+stances
+spells
+mountable
+versatile
+familiar
+fireball :smirk

Scout/Fighter
+Feats
+can fill rogue position
+mountable
+versatile
+more skills
+more maxish

yes that is annoying. I would use the hand crossbow if not for this. with the repeater I was hoping I could reason that I could pull the lever with a hook built into my armor or on my hip. A self loading hand bow would work. I can't seem to find that magic property tho. i can't remember what book it was in

I'd give some serious thought to Tome of Battle.  Some of the maneuvers in there would work well to simulate Max's mobility--he's always jumping onto moving vehicles, flipping around Thunderdome, and so forth.

Another option, though less, if you want a lot of mobility is swordsage/cleric. Nice WIS synergy and a much better skill set for athletics.

that's true, but this is a very feat heavy plan so fighter would help. cause I need two weapon fighting feats, mounted feats, and archery feats, and possibly track. luckily the flaw rules are in effect so if i give him some mad Maxish flaws than we're set.
for example (one flaw I came up with and might be able to ge two bonus feats since this is such handicap if you think about it)

Lost Humanity
through past experiences and detachment from human beings for a long time you have lost your humanity
all NPC's start with their attitudes at one level lower than normal.
exception. if they start out unfreindly they do not become hostile and attack immediately.

Well, Iron Heart seems logical, but I was thinking Tiger Claw for mobility.

so far I think I'm gonna go with the Fighter/Scout

my feat plan so far is this

1st- Exotic weapon prof. (great scimitar + Rep. crossbow) 2 weapon fighting, and pointblank shot
2nd- mounted combat
3rd- Ride by attack
4th- Mounted archery, precise shot
5th-
6th- imprv. 2 wep. fighting, ranged Disarm
7th-
8th-spirited charge, shot on the run

any problems or ideas or feats I don't know of but should?
