Horrid animal companions: why?
« on: February 26, 2009, 10:28:15 AM »
I've been musing over this alot, and I am having a hard time figuring out why one should use a horrid animal instead of the dire version.  yes, horrid is a good upgrade from dire, but it also counts as a higher druid level animal companion.  because of this, you lose 2HD, +1str/dex, +2 nat armor and some random special abilities.  is +5 nat AC, +4 con and +d6's of acid damage actually worth it? although the acid immunity could probably be abused....

Once you have a Dire Bear for a companion, the acid damage is worth it.

but, at that level, you could also get a T-rex or a dire elephant.... or a Roc, or even a dire tiger.  is the horrid template worth THAT?

It's sometimes worth it and sometimes not.

EDIT: You have to know by the situation you're currently in. And if it's not... it only takes how many hours to change animal companions? I think a Horrid Tiger or a Horrid Bear would be sweet as hell.

Dire Bears have 3 attacks/round and a +23 grapple check, compared to the T-Rex's 1 attack/round and +30 grapple. Plus, that one attack all ready has Swallow Whole, which means it's all ready dealing acid damage (which means it doesn't stack with the damage added from Horrid).

The Dire Tiger I will give you. Advanced Fleshraker works too, but can't grapple as effectively. The Roc is also nice, but highly impractical for a good number of standard scenarios (same problem with T-Rex, they are just too big).

At those levels, you want your companion to be just the right size to grapple something and have a high number of attacks/round to make those checks with (or deal extra damage each round). If it's too big, it won't be able to follow you effectively. If it's too small, it won't be able to grapple threats (you can Enlarge a Dire Bear or Tiger to the right size, but you lose out if you shrink a Roc to try and fit it through the barn door).

^ That's actually one advantage of animal companions, is that their HD go on forever and ever. So you can give your animal companion, say, Improved Unarmed Strike, and it will be able to deal lethal damage with unarmed strikes, and thus grapple multiple times/round with its BAB (grapple is an attack option, after all), and the penalties should be pretty low.

Do unarmed strikes stack with natural attacks?  Because a dire bear already gets as many attacks as a medium BaB creature gets, unless you count the D&D Joke Book campaign setting.
