Pimp my spellbook!
« on: February 25, 2009, 09:23:23 AM »
Alright, the players have captured a spellbook. They don't really know what it is though, they are merely suspicious that they have found a book that's bound in human leather, has pages made out of salamander vellum, and has crude drawings of dicks on every page.

(Note: Secret Page + Extended Nystul's Magical Aura should keep them busy for a while)

Now, eventually they'll figure out the ruse. I was wondering what effects I could put in the spellbook other than the classic Explosive Runes, Sepia Snake Sigil, etc. (I intend to have a second layer of traps behind most pages, the remaining spells are basically stuff to aid in the casting of Planar Binding such as Dismissal, Magic Circle spells, Dimensional Anchor, etc.) Also, the leather is literally the spellcaster's own skin, so scrying on the book should be pretty easy. (The spellbook wasn't very valuable, but it's the principle. It's his book, he wants it back.)

This note:

"Well done, interlopers, for managing to claim this tome of mine. Though it is at best a meager article, hardly worthy of the effort you would have had to make to obtain it, the fact that you were willing to risk my wrath to acquire it suggests considerable effort on your part. For that, I must congratulate you. However, for the invisible contact poison of black lotus extract coating each page, YOU must congratulate ME. Now go to your gods."

Arcane mark is very simple, yet fun.
Ja vuosia myöhemmin
kalvas kaksikko lattialla motellin tihrustelee,
kun sama keiju katossa leijailee.
Kyselevät: "Mikä päivä nyt on?
Tiedätkö sen?"
Kuiskaten laulaa keiju:
"Tämän elämän viimeinen."

That wouldn't be a bad idea, and I still might use it, but the spellbook has already been handled.  However, the person handling it was a ghoul and wouldn't have ever noticed if the pages were poisoned.

However, the wizard who scribed it was NOT immune to poison, so it might be bad for him if he can't even use his spellbook.

The book of vile darkness has "mind poison" or something like that (I'm AFB right now, working from memory". I love that stuff, but use it VERY sparingly. Anyway, any time someone uses a divination spell targeting the mind poison, they're subject to the poison effect. Take that, read magic!

-The Spellbook casts Power Word: Hamster Dance.
-Mavia fails his Will save.
-Mavia is now singing that annoying song with a Perform check of -1.
-Pultaro smashes Mavia into unconsciousness.
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

:lol That would be hilarious to just write in there, to make them freak out. Then on the next page you have

"just kidding about the illiteracy curse, but enjoy this Explosive Runes"
[spoiler]
A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

Could he have placed a contingency on the book, considering he made the book out of his own flesh?

Quote from: d20 srd
You can place another spell upon your person so that it comes into effect under some condition you dictate when casting contingency. The contingency spell and the companion spell are cast at the same time. The 10-minute casting time is the minimum total for both castings; if the companion spell has a casting time longer than 10 minutes, use that instead.

The spell to be brought into effect by the contingency must be one that affects your person and be of a spell level no higher than one-third your caster level (rounded down, maximum 6th level).

I have absolutely no idea if this works; I'm not sure if the book is still considered part of him or not. But if it is, that widens your options. Is the book by any chance alive? Or somehow still connected to the caster in anyway soul-wise? If you found a way to do that, this would make more sense.
