What to buy?
« on: February 24, 2009, 03:48:31 PM »
I have recently gone into a RPG frenzy an feel the urge to buy as many as I can for under my budget of 100. I need help. I can't decide whether or not to focus on the games I have or diversify.
Right now I have: D&D 3.5E & 4E, nWoD, Orpheus, Starwars SAGA, Call of Cthulhu d20, d20 Modern

What kind of games are you looking for?  Crunchy?  Story-driven?  Good fluff?

My first thought is Spirit of the Century.  It's high pulp adventure with great narrative control mechanics.  Everybody should own it.
Still came that eldritch, mocking cry - "Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!" and at last we remembered that the demoniac Shoggoths...had no voice save the imitated accents of their bygone masters.

Savage Worlds is one of my favorites, and it's only ten bucks.

Paranoia, perhaps?  Kinda hard to get nowadays though.

I like the tone of Exalted, but I hesitate to call it a system.  You need actual playability for that.

You can get Paranoia from the Mongoose website. They sell it in Euros, but as long as you have a paypal account you're good.

Paranoia is definitely a game I would suggest for you, emissary.
My choice place for buying Magic: the Gathering Singles: adventuresOn.com

I have to agree, Paranoia XP is sheer chaotic joy.  You can get the base book, without any expansions or splats, and have a blast for many moons.

And if you disagree, well, that's treason citizen.  Maybe your next clone won't listen to any of that Commie Mutant Propaganda.

Think Mutants & Masterminds should fill a niche in your collection. For when you want to do Exalted type gaming with something that sorta works. It's a bit more of a toolkit for a game than a game IMO though. The way ranges and stuff scale do very well for over the topness.
The mind transcends the body.
It's also a little cold because of that.
Please get it a blanket.

I wish I could read your mind,
I can barely read mine.

"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

There is no higher price than 'free'.

I just got GURPS. I'm not sure if I should have picked Shadowrun instead.

M&M is a solid choice. The supplements are awesome. I want so many of them.

After the Bomb (second edition) is a great animal based post-apocalyptic setting.

Gamma World (4th edition) is my second favorite RPG of all time.

Everstone: Blood Legacy is a wonderful version of the 3.5 rules.

Houses of the Blooded, the pdf, is only five dollars from IPR.

For the price, it cannot be beat.
