Sneaking Around In Full Armour, Part II
« on: February 22, 2009, 08:48:46 AM »
[reposted from GITP and 339]

What's the best armour we can come up with for a dexy scout-type? The original SAIFA thread is great, but it requires putting levels into Dread Commando. I'm sure we can come up with some awesome armour that doesn't need you to build specifically to wear it.

Goals:
A base of medium or even heavy armour
No ACP
Max dex of +7 or higher.

Currently the best I've come up with is Mithral Breastplate of Nimbleness, by looking at the Armoured Wizards Here They Come thread, but this is BG. I'm sure we can do better than that.

Just take like 3 levels of Ruby Knight Vindicator. You get no ACP to sneaking with that, and then you can add silent moves, greater for an additional +15.

Anyway, if you take mithral breastplate, it's only a +5 max dex and +5 AC. In my opinion, if you want armor and you HAVE to have it be light, maybe 'cuz you're a swordsage, I like giving myself a set of +1 Halfweight Mechanus Gear. +11 AC bonus, no ACP on sneakin' if you're a RKV. And then you have, like, a whole other stat to put things into, say, wisdom.

RKV may help. I'm aiming for this to become a handbook for people wanting good armour that doesn't require you to take levels in specific classes just to wear the armour. Many people will have a build progression already which has no room for RKV or Dread Commando. This is why I said can we come up with an armour that doesn't require a specific build.

No no no.  No twilight on a chain shirt, it's a waste of a +2 enhancement.  Get Nimble and some other +1 instead.

Feycraft Mithral Chain Shirt with a thistledown suit.  +4AC, +6 Max Dex 0 ACP, ASF. no magical enhancements needed yet.

I know dastana is from OA (and eats your bracer slot IIRC), but where is Chahar-Aina from?

It's Epic, so doesn't really count, but Armor of the Celestial Battalion is pretty nice.  You could probably reverse engineer a lot of its functions to come up with a  non-Epic version that would work.

Chahar-Aina is from OA as well, and no, neither eats a magic item slot.

And yes, the Nimbleness + Thistledown suit works as well :)

I'm AFB right now, but I could have sworn Twilight is a +1 enhancement.

My bad, my memory must be shot.  But twilight is for Mithril Breastplates; you can do better for chain.

A Githcraft Twilight Mithril Breastplate also has ASF 0, but has ACP 1, so you take (it was either -1 or -2, I forget) to your attack rolls, but for many casters, that doesn't matter.  and hey, 1 more point of AC from Armor.  (1 less point max Dex though, and you spent a +1 enhancement)

Dude, the Chain Shirt+Chahar-Aina-Dastana combo gets you a total of +6 to AC ;)

Yeah, but some people just *have* to eke out that +1

At high level, you're gonna want a Thistledown Padded Jacket (0% ASF, 0 ACP, Max Dex +10, +1 Armor bonus to AC) with a bunch of armor enhancements on it (Heavy fortification is always good, as is anything that heals you or gives initiative), and screw the AC- you have Greater Mirror Image and Greater Blink.

A Vest of the Archmage (+8 Armor bonus to AC) is better AC that almost any armor you can wear anyway, and it's other benefits are fantastic.

At higher levels, definitely.
By the way, doesn't thistledown have a downside as well, like an increase in ACP or a decrease of Max Dex? I'm AFB right now, but I seem to remember something like that...

Chain shirt = ACP 2, Thistledown = +1 ACP, Mithril = -3 ACP.  Net = 0 ACP

Is it not Nifty?

That's what I meant, but yeah, it works out nicely with a Chain Shirt :)
