Mythic Sagas: Society and Culture
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:18:41 PM »
I will use this thread to provide general info about the world of Mythic Sagas.

The World at Largehere.
Fauna of Rasheman
Here is a quick list of the basic animals common to Rashemen, along with notes on the animals (both real world and Mythic Sagas world), and notes on stat locations (more for me to keep it all straight...)

Elk - the same animal as the American Moose, just given different names on different sides of the Atlantic (Elk, Silver Marches)
Red Deer - common European deer (Deer, Silver Marches)
Roe Deer - small scandinavian deer (Silver Marches Deer altered to 1 HD, size Small)
Reindeer - Caribou (Caribou, Frostburn)
Fox  - (Artic fox, Frostburn)
Pine Marten/Stoat/Least Weasel - (Weasel, MM)
Boar - (Boar, MM)
Badger - (Badger, MM)
Brown Bear - (Brown Bear, MM)
Wolf - (Wolf, MM)
Wolverine - (Wolverine, MM)
Lynx - (Lynx, Races of Faerun)
Otter - (Sea Otter, Frostburn)
Snow Tigers - the namesake of the berserker lodge.  Stats are the red tiger from Silver Marches, but they ARE snow tigers [they even have the color-changing fur of the snow tigers, as described in 2e books] - (Red Tiger, Silver Marches)
Golden Eagle/Sea Eagle/Osprey - (Eagle, MM)
Roughlegged Buzzard - Vulture, Sandstorm)
Peregrine Falcon/Gyrfalcon - (Hawk, MM)
Snowy Owl/Eagle Owl - (Owl, MM)
Grouse
Raven - (Raven, MM)
Crane - (Ibis, Races of Faerun)
Song Birds - several types of sparrows, nuthatches, woodpeckers, etc.
Sea Birds - gulls and others
Bats - (Bat, MM)
Beaver
Seal - (Seal, Frostburn)
Squirrels
Hares
Adders - (Tiny/Small Viper, MM)
Lemming/Shrew
Vole
Various types of mice
Rats - actually not that common in Scandinavia, but they do exist.

Also appropriate dire versions of the above

Cattle - cows of some type
Sheep/Goats - (Brixashulty, Races of the Wild)
Pony - they use ponies as pack animals and to ride in traversing the land.  They aren't typically used for war (Pony, MM)
Elkhound - ("Riding" Dog, not trained for war, MM)
Skogkattr - mousers and pets, this wild breed's name literally means "Forest Cat"

Other animals found in "Norse" lands outside of Rashemen (ie - near "slavic countries")
Wisent - (Bison)

By no means is this all-inclusive, but it gives you an idea of what you might hunt or see out in the woodlands.
ThingsNydeshka
Raging berserkers are well known and well respected in Rashemen, but an uncontrolled berserker is feared and cast out of society due to the danger he poses to all around him.  Mechanically, this loss of control is represented in two ways.  The first and most dangerous is the Frenzied Berserker class; they have no control whatsoever over their frenzy, and are truly a threat to those around them.  The second is the Berserk prestige class from Deities and Demigods; they do have some control over themselves, as the Fury cannot be started unless the Berserk wills it so, but once it has started, they lose control in the same manner as a frenzied berserker.

Those who's lack of control has lead to the injury or death of Rashemi are declared nydeshka, literally a "blunted sword."  Nydeshka are banished from Rasheman, and in effect, given a death sentence.  They are given a black, blunt, unsharpened sword, and are magically compelled to use only that weapon; they are sent to their last battle, for what warrior will survive long wielding an unsharpened bludgeon against his foes?

Statistically, such a sword is a two-handed weapon that deals 1d4 points of bludgeoning damage, with a x2 critical multiplier.
Village Life

Homes
Most Rashemi villages are composed of one or two berserker lodge longhouses, and many small homes that are designed so they are partly submerged in the ground, with turf roofs that run all the way to the ground, making a village appear from some angles to be a large grouping of earthen mounds.  Most villages are also then surrounded by an earthen mound or rampart.  Here are some images of typical Rashemi homes:
