Guaging interest...
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:27:31 AM »
I liek a lot of the critters in MMII.  Well specifically I like the concept, not the horribly flawed execution.  But I can't use them because the entries are friggin' horrible.  SO I'm thinking of updating hte whole thing for 3.5.  Assuming anyone is interested.

I have to agree that the monsters themselves are cool.  Also, it's the only 3.0 Monster Manual left.

What are your intentions?  Rewriting the whole thing?  Just the monsters you like?

You might be able to come up with a relatively simple conversion chart or something.  I think the biggest thing you'd need to convert is damage reduction, and a few other miscelaneous things.

It does however already have an update to 3.5 in the errata, you know this, yes?

I agree that doens't fix everything, but it might save you some work :)

The leviathan isn't worth its super high CR.  One reverse gravity or a party of flyers will easily down it.
Hood - My first answer to all your build questions; past, present, and future.

Speaking of which:
Don't even need TO for this.  Any decent Hood build, especially one with Celerity, one-rounds [Azathoth, the most powerful greater deity from d20 Cthulu].
Does it bug anyone else that we've reached the point where characters who can obliterate a greater deity in one round are considered "decent?"

Good point.

But they horribly nerfed my favorite from that book with that update errata.

Please bhu! Do it justice! The asperi begs to be a PC race (even though it hasn't got hands...)

P.S. +1 on the spelling thing. Gauge is a weird word, but it is memorable in its weirdness. Gauging, like gouging. Both fun. Maybe.

My intentions are to redo them all as the CR's are pretty well fucked.

Just out of curiosity, what are your plans for the Abyssal Mauler (I think that's the name).  IIRC, that's the monster everyone says DMs only use to kill players.

I think it's something like a CR 2.  For the most part, everything is in line with its CR except for its ability to do 2d8 damage to someone automatically if they drop them below 0 HP.  Basically, if you get dropped, statistically speaking, you die.

Higher CR or remove the ability?

Dunno yet.  I used them once and I didn't like them.  I'd probably change the ability to something else since I nearly TPK'd a party that should've been able to handle them easily (but I didn't know about the books CR issues then).

My first concern is: If I do this is there a potential for getting the gameologists into trouble?  If that's a solid yes I prolly won't be doing it.  If I can post stuff without causing them trouble I'll start soon.  Probably put it in Inspiration Strikes or somewhere.

Hmm...peekd thru the update booklet.  It seems okay, or at least better than it was (I haven't had a chance to look at it in detail).

I may still redo some.  I've been thinking of redesigning monsters for a horror campaign i wanna run

Nice!  Do post any examples you have.  I always love ideas for horror games.

Do you have Heroes of Horror?  There are a few monsters in there, and they might give you ideas for how to modify some creatures.  Most of those monsters, it seems, are in there because they do something to trick a player's expectations.  Just making something work differently than the player expects can be enough to disconcern them.

Yeah I have most all the 3.5 books.  I still need to get Dungeonscape, Cityscape, Exemplars of Evil, and Incarnum.

I'll start posting the spooky critters along with my silly ones in the Inspiratin boards.

Ahh, the 3.0 monster manual 2... so many broken toys in there for the discerning mage. I remember the Firbolg and its wonderfully abusable strength score. I remember the Death Knight template and the Titanic creature template (which did odd things with the summoning rules).

Good book, lotsa fun concepts in it. Get crackin'.

The updates will be in the When Inspiration Strikes board along with my other stuff then.  Not sure which thread I'll put it in though, may have to make one...
