Question: bbx [glow] --- mini help
« on: January 21, 2009, 06:07:20 PM »
I've been wondering how some posters were doing this:

The Mad Mage. Silkur's Revenge.

via these codes:

{glow=green,2,300]The Mad Mage[/glow]. {glow=green,2,300]Silkur's Revenge[/glow]

( ... with the obvious sub ... )

But here are my questions:
What does the " ,2,300 " do ??
Is it color based or what ??

because ...

[glow=green] this example didn't work[/glow]

 ???
Help please. And thanks ahead of time.

I couldn't figure out what the 300 did, but the first number is probably the number of pixels in the glow...

If you play around with it (300 removed on all of them):

Changing the 2 to a 1 gives you this...

Changing it to a 10 gives you this...

And a 5 gives you this.

Making them green gives you this with a 1, this with a 5 and and this with a 10...

edit: it made you scroll to see all of my post when I first posted it...

You know, I did that back when I started the PbPs and thought it was cool.

Now that I have a new computer and have switched to Firefox, the glow doesn't work. It looks like it's a flat green background. Opening IE shows it working as normal. Anyone know a reason why?

It helps Micro$oft track your movements...  :smirk

It's not really important, so other browsers probably just don't support it.  It's one of the ways they stay smaller than IE... *insert the old smiley hugging Firefox and pushing IE away*

Yeah, I'm running Opera and it just shows up as a flat background for me.

I write web-based stuff for work, and there are a lot of differences once you get beyond the basics between how the browsers display things.

The relevant tags probably aren't part of the HTML specification, but something extra Microsoft added to IE. Now if they could just support all the standard features of HTML... :mad

Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.

As I understand it, they intentionally add new, incompatible functionality, while having sketchy adherence to the standard, so that webpage designers, especially corporate ones, have to cater to the average user, who uses IE. Since the websites won't display as intended in rival browsers, and they have enough market share to try to redefine the standard, you can see where THAT is going.

And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"

That's exactly how it works.  IE6 is the corporate standard where I work, so when I create pages, I have to get them looking good in that browser.  I've had to do a few goofy work arounds in the past to make up for issues with not supporting standard HTML.

On the plus side, some of those extras they add in are quite handy.  Did you know using a file upload control in IE, you can access the client's physical path structure?  It's kind of scary if someone's writing something malicious, but it was necessary for me to write an update function for one page.

Well, Web Programming 1 teaches at least enough to spot THAT, and looking at the source of multibrowser compatible sites tends to show some coding gymnastics to make it look the same on IE and other stuff. That and every now and then you hear of some stunning vulnerbility that affects IE alone in the news, no doubt because of the more exotic tricks they are pulling, I guess.

Of course, all the geeky sites I visit on a regular basis are optimised for firefox anyway. :D

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm posting via Firefox, but I'm not sure why the 1 through 10 numbers all come up the same glow-yness.

It helps to use a different color text with the glow. It doesn't show normally on Firefox, as has been mentioned, but the color change makes it nice and easy to read.
