CO Diary: DIary of Chuck
« on: May 23, 2008, 12:29:54 PM »
I will be moving my things here, as i plan to continue on with chuck.

Hello, i saw all those neat threads about CO diaries, and thought i could give mine a try.

My build is based on this thread: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=852524

Chuck the ruby knight windicator is a build that combines deliriously high speed and thornado throw to reach astronomical damage.  The problem is, this can only be done at level 20, 19 at best.  I wanted to see what would happened if someone played this kind of build from the very low levels, to level 20, would he be sub par, on par, or clearly better as he goes up.  This is the thread to find this out

I started this table top game with a friend as the DM, he is aware of what i'm doing and cool with it, we don't plan to go epic anyways, so I'll maybe be able to throw 1-2 people tops at level 20.  The game started at level 3, but we played a bit and the startings of the campaign are not very clear in my mind, so i'll start with the last session, last week.

Campaign information
The campaign is set in faerun, in a city surrounded by a humongus forest, the city is called bastion.

Recently, a coalition of trolls, orcs, gnolls, and clerics of talona have joined together to rule the region and are attempting to invade bastion, the elven city in the forest, and to throw aside the loose domination the green dragons have over this forest land.
This is my character:

I will update the stats as the game goes on, so you get the stats of where i am at every time

The session starts out with me and the elan just drinking in the local tavern under the stern gaze of the innkeeper, who hates the fact that i'm just drinking my own made tea and not the crap he's selling.  Happily for me, the elan is drinking for two.

We meet up with the wizard and the githzerai, and the wizard, a local militia man, informs us that in two days time we will be tasked with escorting a local diplomat expert to the elves city, a week's travel from bastion.  The pay is good, the cause honorable, we're bored, we of course agree!!!

As the journey starts, we pay little attention to the diplomat, who is more than happy to leave us fighting folk alone and plan his negociations in advance.  We are given two horses that pull along a western-caravan style cart to carry our things.

At the start of the journey, i use my domain spell and my divination chips to cast AUGURY!!! (it was that or desecrate...) and it informs me there will be..... woe on the way.  Oh noes! I hadn't seen it coming!  We bravely continue our way despite knowing these dire omens.

After one way of travel, blacky, the satyr shadowdancer who is the protector of Bastion and a link to the druidic circle, comes and has a little chat with us, giving us a chest with potions to help us on the journey, and informs us that while he has cleared the road, we should be wary.  Pffff, he got nothing on my augury spell!

On the thrid day of travel, the githzerai monk spots a dent in the road, as if the earth was moved there.  We stop the caravan and go poke it a bit, revealing a 20x10 ft. hole that is 10 feets deep, the perfect caravan stopper!!  Pulling our weapons out and casting minute long buffs, we stay wary when, suddenly, FOUR ORCS CHARGE OUT OF THE FOREST.  It's battle time and we roll initiative in a mirth of laughter, they're orcs and we are, after all, level 5 adventurer's!!!

Fight
The githzerai wins initiative (Damn his 24 dex) and charitably offers the orcs to surrender, as they are clearly outmatched and outnumbered.  He still moves next to them, but doesn't hit anything.  The abjurer, not wanting to lose precious spells per day on mere orcs, calls for them to surrender too.  My turn!  Using sense motive i know that these orcs don't plan on surrendering any time soon, i therefore move next to one of them and mow him down with a well placed katana chop, first kill for beren!!!  The psion, having already used Energy Shield (the thing that does 4d6 damage when you're hit), goes next to an orc, and hits it with his fist, provoking an attack of opportunity.  The orc hits him, and he soaks the damage with the elan resilience power, the orc is then toast from the energy shield.  The remaining orcs then take swings at us and miss, because we are beasts in AC, me with a total of 23 AC with my chain shirt, protection from evil, wisdom to AC, and my dex, and the githzerai monk being even more of a beast at 27.

The Githzerai try's to roundhouse kick an orc, but missed him, and the abjurer finally casts grease on the two orcs, making them fall prone, and we think this concludes the fight, when the wizard takes a crossbow bolt in the shoulder!!!

IT'S A TRAP
http://dndorks.com/comics/1%2f26%2f2004.aspxConclusion:

While i'm having problems presently finding my exact niche inside the group, i'm a sufficient know it all to fit many roles.  My high stats and decent BAB and maneuver's allow me to dish out damage and my high AC due to swordsage, high wis and high dex, plus buff spells from cleric allow me to stand my ground agaisn't most adversaries.  I'm also the group healer.  Seeing as the group already has a skillmonkey in the monk and james bard is the party face, i'm going to go buffer/healer/with a side of melee hitter for now and see where that takes me.  I'm looking forward to level 10 so i can persist divine power.  So far, beren has performed admirably in combat, having an answer for anything and more the DM has sent us.  This build looks playable throught the future levels.

The roleplay is hard to pinpoint, as usually swordsages are atheists, and RKV is a crusader aimed class.  Plus i have problems between the whole sublime way vs. Wee-Ja faith thing.  As a RKV i think things will be a bit easier to play out, but not that much.  Plus i don't have much experience with Wee-Ja as a god and have problems teaching her tenets.  Any tips on this would be appreciated, i'll probably figure it out eventually.

Future build

Round 1Round 2ConclusionWhat worked: Flashing sun+Burning blade, power attack, crusader's strike, these are always my favorites.  Bull's strenght, protection from evil, and divine favor are also quite good.

What didn't work: My FREAKING domains, if they didn't give two feats i desperatly need, they would SO be out of here, these things have crappy low level spells, and let's face it, i'm gonna reach 6 level spells top.
The low level diamond mind maneuver's are also a burden, but i need them for quicksilver motion, so they have to stay.  I can't wait for the real power house maneuver's to come in, like divine surge, Rallying strike, Greater Divine surge, and aura of chaos.

CO Diary: Makings of a monster build Part 3: That place in that forest
A.K.A

A story of 2 chucks

But first, a bit about the DM.
The DM is a childhood friend of mine, who is, ironically, nicknamed chuck (his real name is Charles).  The main reason i get to play this build is because it's named Chuck.  Chuck asks me to tell you that he is 6ft.5 with kickass abs and a badass scar on his face.  Now you know.

Now to move on to the game.  Pimped out in my new gear, i look forward to this, we're going to defend a fort in the woods, this is going to KICK. ASS!! But I learn that we have 2 ''temps'' this game, one of witch i have to make a build for (the halfling dagger thrower on another thread).  Way to kill my eagerness (I hate games with too much people) at least the abjurer isn't there.....

WHO AM I KIDDING, WE HAVE NO GOD, THERE IS NO GOD.

Ahem, that's passed, whew...

The other ''temp'' is a sorcerer, but the player is ..... let's say that his conception of D&D is usually rolling.... medicinal herbs..... and smoking them one after the other during the game, occasionally participating in the battle.  But he was ok this time.

Our brave group of adventurers set forth in a caravan pulled by dire horses (hun hun, dire horses, you heard me right, we ridin' in style brotha) towards our fortified ''avant-poste'', the palce where it's about to go down, our mighty keep, the bastion of the north.  Finally we arrive.....it's a cave in the woods.

Not kidding, it is, literally, a cave, in the woods.  Like, with a big entrance and all.  At least there's a wall.  It's made out of wood and rocks.  At this point, a bit of the military commander in me died.  We meet up with the rag tag group of soldier's in there, and are taken around.  It's.... rocky..... and.... stony....

We go down in the cave to see some iron bars baring the way to a deeper tunnel.  The iron bars are also protected by a permanent wall of force.  We learn that this is why the fort is built in a cave, as this is an underdark route to the middle of bastion.  Or something.

At this point i wanted to build a collapsing system on the roof, or dig up some trenches, but all my ideas were turned down by the captain of the place.  And so we started taking encounter after encounter in there.  First one was a group of 20 or so orc warriors.  We had 50 fighters on our side.  It was a massacre.  The monk and me sat this one out, as there was no honor in that fight.

**WARNING, THERE WERE MANY BATTLES IN THIS SESSION, SO I WILL ONLY REPORT 1 OF THEM ROUND BY ROUND, THE OTHERS I CAN'T RECALL CLEARLY, MOSTLY BECAUSE I HAD TIRED OF THE WAVES AFTER WAVE OF BATTLE**

The next wave were gnolls who threw a Stinking Cloud Arrow inside our wall, we had to get out of there to face them in the open.  I got hit by 3-4 arrows and survived barely, mostly due to roots of the mountain.  The sorcerer threw some fireballs and the psion some energy lines, clearing most of them, the gnoll tripper who was with the archers did not even try to trip me once :( i was so sad :(  I had my stance for that and everything.... :(  The dwarf, the monk and me cleaned up the rest, helped by the halfling and his ''hail of knives''.

After that, we were informed that there was a team of Ogres coming this way with a Ram, they were accompanied by an Ogre Magi.  Quickly we departed to take care of those, after being healed by a wand of lesser vigor.  We hid in the forest, looking at the road.  But the monk would have none of it, it was not honorable he said, and honor is an important thing.  I'm not THAT honorable, so i hid (gotta use that cloak of elvenkind sometimes).  Two Ogres turned round the bend and charged our delicate little monk. Or so they thaught

THE OGRE FIGHT
SURPRISE ROUND:
Ogre 1&2: charge the monk
As they pass by the rest of the party, our readied actions proc:

Me: Charge the passing Ogre as a standard action (half move) and crit him, dealing 52 damage, and laying him low.
Dwarf: Charge the other ogre as a leap attack, landing the hit, dealing 60ish damage, laying him low too.

We're quickly disposing of the body's for the main corp of Ogres sure to come, when we're all hit by a cone of cold, and two Ogre's pop out of invisibility next to me and the dwarf.  Luckily mine misses me, but the dwarf is hit.

IT'S A TRAP
Conclusion
Games with over 5 people suck, fights take way too long, i prefer to stay with a 5 less party, all the time.  The encounters, wich would have been challenging for a party of 5, we're pretty much pushovers for a party of 7 (counting the bard).  I did not do much this game, but at least i leveled, bringing me to LEVEL 8!!!

I have level 3 spells, 6 BAB, and a will to destroy people.  I'm thinking about using Lesser aspect of the deity persisted to bring my turning attempts from 12 to 14, than use those extra turning attempts to persist something else, but then i couldn't recover my maneuvers as a swift action. I'm gonna grab a cloak of resistance +2 or +3 with the loot, my fort and ref saves could use the boost.

Pretty boring game, there was only battle, and i kinda liked the roleplaying aspect in that, and the rich and funny storyline. (I'm looking at you chuck!)

Ladies ladies ladies

it's time for another installment of: Diary of Chuck

CO DIARY: Makings of a monster Build Part 4, Draconic Ewoks and Scorpion/man Crossbreed

A.K.A

Chuck's on crack

Level 3 spells are a big thing for me, that I must say!!  Despite my 28 AC, i'm still lacking ANY sort of natural armor bonus AND shield bonus to AC, making me mad.  I resolve to change that as soon as possible, maybe an animated shield and a pearl of power 3 (so the wizard can cast spiderskin on me) that would get me an additional 6 ac, more if i cast magic vestment. Nevertheless.

Check out the spells section in the first post, it's new and I need help with my spells.

We wake up the morning following the successfully repelled attack of the cave.  Our Abjurer is coming towards us, after disembarking from a horse, he seems to have come with an escort.  He gives us our new orders, we are to intercept a shipment of goods that is heavily guarded, and is within our vicinity.  It's basically why we were chosen, we're near.  Unfortunately, the halfling the monk and the dwarf are dispatched somewhere else.  So it's me, the wizard, the sorcerer, and the psion.  Making me the tank.  CRAP!!!!

I cast persistent lesser aspect of the deity, making my turning attempts go from 12-14, then I cast persistent Footsteps of the Divine.  Basically I just gained a free +4 charisma and some energy resistance.  Let me tell you something, Footsteps of the divine persistent (borrowing farlanghs +50 to move) coupled with step of the wind stance is GODLY, your just prancing around in the forest, coering in one round of walk what the others take 5 rounds to do. GODLY!!!!  We finally get to the ''ambush point''.  I decide to go scout from where they come to get an assessment of how we should do this.  I get into the forest and hide, moving at half speed (40ft.) and quickly reach the advancing caravan.  There are about 20 Gnolls, archers and spider riders combined, and 12 scropion folk.  These are new, so we can't assess they're threat level yet, and 32 to 4 seems a bit overwhelming.  We're gonna have to come up with a very SOLID strategy.  The night is coming soon, so I figure we have until tomorrow until they arrive.  Blowing my remaining 5 hours on footsteps of the divine, I zip back to the camp and stop roadrunner style in the midst of they're stunned looks.  I even go **MEEP MEEP**.  I tell them of reckon and we walk up and down the road, trying to find a good ambush spot and sicussing wether we should conduct a night raid or not, when suddenly a net closes around us.

Surprise!
Yeah

You guessed it
I fail my save and seriously consider buying a Vest of resistance +3 ASAP, to raise my fort and ref saves a bit.  The psion fails his save too, the sorcerer hasn't arrived yet, the only one succeeding on his save being the abjurer, damn him and his spell that grants +3 to all saves!  DAMN HIM!  We're suspended in a net, ALLA star wars return of the jedi.  But without the Wookie, for witch I am grateful.

Kobolds start pouring out of the forest, screaming  Ayyyyeeeeeeeeeee and menacing us with their pointy sticks. We start talking to them, all of us realising that the kobolds have what we most direly need: Trapmaking skills.  Our traps generally consist of..... ready actions.  That's pretty much it.

We start making diplomacy checks.  Correction, the abjurer speaks draconic and the psion has psionic tongues as a power.  THEY start making diplomacy checks, proposing a fair share of the loot if the kobolds help us waylay the coming caravan.

********************************** *PAUSE IN THE GAME****************************

Like I said earlier, the DM is 6'5'' and has a bad ass abs and a kick ass scar on his face.  Ok well maybe not, but he's tall and in shape.  Seeing him make a squeaky voice to imitate that of the Kobolds was simply hilarious, it gave us an even more ''moons of Endor'' feel and was generally very fun.

Reeks of Battlefield Control Battle!Conclusion:
