Blant chan Chyfrwyster Gweithiwr
« on: January 09, 2009, 03:38:02 PM »
Hunkered down in the dell of rolling plains, Hynafiaeth was not a city, or a town, or even really a village. It was a mere smattering of huts around the rim of a large pit, dug deep into the earth. Earth piled up around the walls, a crude form of insulation against the wind that whipped from the east, carrying down across the plains from the great ocean, a thousand miles with no hills or mountains to stop the gathering speed. It was bitterly cold, the deepest nights of winter, and howls and cries of beasts rang down upon those huddled at the bottom of the pit. Those creatures of the plains occasionally ventured past the banked earth that shielded the scattered buildings, tearing into the stores and stealing food, making off into the night with necessary items. A pest, to be sure, but nothing compared with the tornadoes and flashfires that ravaged the plains. For those, the diggers had built chambers deep into the walls of the chasm, accessible only through narrow crawl-ways.

It was a strange and lonely existence for those who worked upon the earth of
Hynafiaeth, for only two men cut holes in the ground now. All others were gone, long dead, or missing, forgotten as the challenge to dive deeper swarmed over the minds of those that remained. By hand, by tool, by magic, the earth was shifted and the tunnels went further, went deeper, crawled onwards towards the goals that lay nestled within the ticking crystals and hidden minds of the two burrowers. It was towards the artefacts of the Liara that the chambers led, a race of those dead and gone, now simply plunder to be gotten from the earth, provided those who search found what they searched for. Those burrowing into the earth were men of metal, able to continue their search long after any others had failed, and is is here that we join them in their quest for the artefacts of the Liara.

A massive figure holds a glowing bar in one hand and a shovel in another. A tattered cloak does little to conceal his metallic body, its odd proportions hissing and squeaking with each step as he moves down the tunnel.

In a rumbling voice which seems to echo on its own, he speaks "Over here, Thraxis. I think I've found something."

A gem-encrusted golden figure turns its glowing eyes towards the voice. The sound of its wings rubbing together as it walks is the same as the metal-on-metal scraping sound its armor makes. Large horns curl downward on the sides of its head. As it walks over, a spider-like crystal scurries from under its armor to perch upon its shoulder to see what's going on.

Thraxis does not speak. He (or it) merely looks silently towards where the other figure points.

Opening before the hissing creature is a crevice, a dark chasm that disappears below them into the earth. The unlit cave breathes, air from deep below coming up and brushing across the metal face, escaping towards a sun it had not seen in many years. The floor of the chamber is far below, far enough that it cannot be seen or heard from their current location upon the roof of whatever structure lies beneath. Perhaps it is the home of the Liara, or only worn by the passage of time.

Thraxis says "Hmm... yes, it does look like you have found something! Let me send my fragment in to see if this leads anywhere."

As he finishes speaking, the spidery crystal decends into the crevice.
The psicrystal attempts to hide and move silently as it decends, watching and listening for signs of danger as it goes. (Visual range 40 ft, ignores darkness, concealment, etc).

Hide 1d20+14=31
Move Silently 1d20+6=10
Spot 1d20+6=23
Listen 1d20+6=13

Also, can we assume that we've "attuned" ourselves to the Power Stones we have already? Or will we have to roll for it when we first try to use them?
The room beneath opens into a great darkness, the walls invisible to the floating crystal. As it gets closer to the floor, rocks and spikes litter the ground, while a river rushes along one side of the chasm, the noise dull and muted despite what should be a great echoing room. There is little evidence of habitation here, except for a narrow path worn deep in the stone.
It has to crawl along the walls still, so no floating (yet). It can take 10 to climb and has a high bonus, so I figured I didn't need to roll a check...
Thraxis says "Well, the fragment says this opens up into quite a large chamber, with a worn trail leading through the middle of it, and the sounds of a river. That path must have seen quite a lot of use in the distant past to wear the stone like that, so I am hopeful we've found one of the lost chambers of the Liara! Shall we investigate it further?"
I'm going to go ahead and post, because I will be busy later tonight, and I think we have worked out what we're doing.
Not really waiting for a reply because he assumes he knows the answer, Thraxis mentally summons the psicrystal back to himself, and pulls out a power stone from his belt. He quietly makes mental contact with the stone, and uses the powers from it on the psicrystal.
Take 10 on the required Psicraft checks to succeed automatically. Manifest (using my own power points so as to not consume the stone) Synthesete and Elfsight, targeting the psicrystal via Share Powers. Using share powers this way means it doesn't have to stay within 5 feet, but I also don't get the benefit of the personal powers I put on it. Elfsight will last 4 hours, and Synthesete will last 40 minutes. It takes at least 4-6 rounds to complete all this (I forget how long... and don't want to look it up, unless it matters somehow...).

I'm assuming Synthesete actually gives the psicrystal a normal visual range, as it allows it to "feel light", and then Elfsight doubles that in the low-light conditions from Prime's everburning torch. Both powers also give bonuses to Search and Spot, especially if within 40 feet so the psicrystal can also use its own telekinetic sight, and let it automatically make search checks for secret doors that it passes within 5' of.
After he's finished using his stones, he puts them away and the psicrystal crawls back down the wall into the crevice to scout ahead of the two explorers. Thraxis says "Want me to go first? Feel free to use my Levitation power on yourself, if you'd like."

He nods and places his palm on Thraxis's shoulder.
Attempting to manifest levitate from another's powers known (DC 17)
1d20+13=21 (success)
I'll expend the 3 pp stored in my Psiforged Body for the manifestation.

If I need to spend a round making contact first, 1d20+13=31 (success)
A faint flicker of light ripples through the construct's body from where he touches it. The area is filled with an odour of ozone as the two figures' feet lift from the ground.

The two metal creatures float down through the air, their eyes reaching out into the darkness, scanning the area, seeing the glint from the stalactites as the light of a flickering torch illuminates a small circle upon the ground. The light and sound as they touch the floor is diminished, less than it would normally be.
Whoops. :D
Thraxis glides around in a wide spiral, dropping 10 feet as he goes, and looking about the room for any other unusual things, or hidden enemies.
I didn't manifest Levitate, so you're the only one floating, Prime. I'm going to glide down using my wings, and save my power points. Thraxis uses a double move to glide around and check things out as he slowly decends, and the Psicrystal also looks around to see if it sees anything.

Here is a Knowledge: Psionics roll to see if I know anything about that circle (I doubt it... but what the heck?)
1d20+5=20

I'll reroll a new Spot check for the psicrystal since it has new bonuses and can see farther (80 ft with the torchlight) thanks to the powers I put on it. I'll go ahead and roll for my character, too, even though he sucks at seeing things compared to the psicrystal. :D

For the automatic search checks to find secret doors, are you going to roll those behind the scenes, Strat?

Psicrystal Spot: 1d20+8=26 (+4 more within 40 feet)
Psicrystal Listen: 1d20+6=25
Thraxis Spot: 1d20+2=9
Thraxis Listen: 1d20+2=18

Knowledge (psionics/arcana) check: 1d20+7=18
Knowledge (dungeoneering) check: 1d20+5=23

I also take 20 on a Search check (20+4=24), or use aid another with the psicrystal if that would be more effective.

Assuming he sees nothing dangerous looking, Thraxis gildes down and lands on the ground. He has his polearm in hand, and bow slung over one shoulder just below his wing.

The land around them is quiet, covered in scattered rocks of glistening material. The path upon which they stand disappears beyond their sight both to the fore and the rear, while here on the floor, the roar and the rumble of the river is louder, yet pressed, as if the sound was hitting a barrier well before the roof of the cavern.
Is there any sign that this cavern is worked, or does it look natural? I don't have any ranks in a knowledge skill to know that, so I guess an Int check would be appropriate? Or maybe I can just try to Aid Another for Prime to make one, since his character is alot smarter. :D

1d20=14

So can we see either wall to the side of us? The ceiling? The river? The range of the torchlight is 40 feet without low light vision, or 80 for the psicrystal (which has it from the Elfsight power).

The cavern is not worked, although there is the well worn path. You can see to the edge of the river, but not the walls or the ceiling. All of those are beyond the sight range currently. This is a large chamber.
