Eberron Ranger
« on: January 04, 2009, 03:34:35 PM »
I'm thinking of an Eberron Half-Elf Ranger. However, I want some levels in a PrC or something to break the plain Ranger20. I'm not sure yet wether to focus on TWF or Archery. All books and Dragons allowed.
One of the things I'm pretty sure of, is swapping Track for Trapsense and Ride for Tumble. Probably going to trade in the Animal Companion for extra spells. (Shooting Star substitution level, I think.)
I've considered the Eldeen Ranger, but that doesn't advance spellcasting and gives only 4 skillpoints/lvl, IIRC.
Swifthunter won't do for this character, since I'm planning another one.
Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Perfect race and setting. There's a 5 level PrC called Revenant Blade in PGtE. Requires you to be a Valenar Elf, but thanks to elven blood you qualify(so long as you're Half-Valenar elf, of course).
The class focuses on combat with Valenar double-scimitar. It's 5th level ability let's you treat both halves of the double scimitar as two-handed weapons. The class is also qualified for easiest by Ranger. :D
It always seems like the barrels around here have something in them.

I thought about it, but it doesn't advance spellcasting, at least not spells/day. But it's an awesome class on its own, yes. Another problem is that it isn't exactly focussing on Archery. (Which I'm leaning to.)
On the other hand, it's quite awesome. Maybe I should think about Travel Devotion with it...

Don't forget Knowledge devotion!

As far as I know, the best way to get damage with archery is to focus on range and bonus damage, so I'm going to go with that. Incarnum is great at getting morale and insight bonuses that are hard to replicate, so maybe consider an Incarnate/Ranger. I saw a nice Ironsoul Forgemaster build, but that requires dwarf, so you'd have to take stoneblessed if you wanted that, and you probably don't.

Skydragonknight, I reread the Revenant Blade, and I remember why I loved it in the first place. Should I go melee, I'll take that path. Maybe some Sword of the Arcane Order with it, for Polymorph.
If I go Archery, I think I'll go for Half Elf Paragon1/Human Paragon3 and the rest Ranger.

You should totally take douchebag or whiny git as flaws to better adhere to the fluff of Tanis, where I can take old grumpy geezer as flaw to be a better Flint. Maybe you can be the meleeist and go for Valenar and I'll go throwing axe style ranged dwarf? Maybe go with the soulforge build Surreal suggested and WBM mentioned a few posts above?

This is not that Ranger, Vidar. That one will be a pretty standard Swifthunter.

Vidar's mom is a melee.  :P And this is a most appropriate smiley for her.

Anyway, I think I'll go for melee.

But this topic isn't about my mum's specialisation (though optimal due to the massive grinding for xp), rather about Gawain's umpteenth ranger.

So, if you're going melee, will you go with the Revenant Blade?
Going for Pouncing goodness with a 2 level Barbarian dip? (Lion Totem & Whirling Frenzy)
If so, other than the standard chargin' feats, maybe a (Cloistered) Cleric dip for Knowledge Devotion (Knowledge Domain), Travel Devotion (Travel Domain) and Extra Turning (Undeath Domain) to fuel them and maybe entry in Prestige Paladin for access to Rhino Rush?
This will ofcourse cost you some more levels to pull of, but it might be worth it if you aren't going for the Frenzied Berserker Death Blender already :P

... your equanimity in using optimal grinding in the same sentence as your mom's grappling specialisation is to be applauded sir  :P

No, I try to avoid the charger route. It's too boring.
I'm trying to keep this as much Ranger as possible.
Leap Attack will probably make it.
Sword of the Arcane Order is still a bordercase.
Wild Cohort is definitly in. I want something decent to ride besides Vidar's Mom.
Maybe Spirited Charge. It's very Valenar-y.
