Awful... or Awesome?
« on: December 30, 2008, 11:03:39 PM »
I lent one of the guys in my RL dnd group season 1 of Slayers, and he has shown it to some of his friends visiting from the states. Said friends then joined us for one game, and one of them made, as her character, what amounts to a Lina Inverse knock-off. Now, knowing that I had a big hand in this, should I feel proud or ashamed?

You got them interested enough to make a pen&paper RPG character?  Kudos to you!  That's awesome!

I'm not too sure about THAT. Supposedly, they had already been playing an older version for some time now. It's the fact that I had a hand in what they played that I'm asking about.

On a semi-related note, the guy I lent the season too ended up getting me a copy of book 4 and 5 of the novels. I'll have to look into getting the rest of the novels at some point, because the series of events are changed. Among other things is an assassin they meet called Zuuma. In the shows, they encounter him a LOT later relatively speaking, but he's still badass. While in the novel he just has a darkness type spell, as well as crazy kung-fu, in the show the darkness also has a nasty AMF inside of it. I guess he had to keep up somehow...

That's awful. Truly awful.

...after all, D&D does a poor job of portraying Lina Inverse. You should instead direct them to Slayers D20, so they can do a proper job of it.  :smirk

(Yes, I'm well aware Slayers d20 is out of print, only available in pdf, and has problems. It's also meant to be hilariously over-the-top and fun and one of the few games I truly regret having not had a chance to actually play yet.)

Considering Slayers had it's roots in an RPG game(from what I heard, the creator's own tabletop game) in the first place, it's awesome.

Tell me you had house rules to make Dragon Slave a regular occurance?

"Just what do you think the moon up in the sky is? Everyone sees that big, round shiny thing and thinks there must be something round up there, right? That's just silly. The truth is much more awesome than that. You can almost never see the real Moon, and its appearance is death to humans. You can only see the Moon when it's reflected in things. And the things it reflects in, like water or glass, can all be broken, right? Since the moon you see in the sky is just being reflected in the heavens, if you tear open the heavens it's easy to break it~"
