PS3 info?
« on: November 29, 2008, 02:31:06 PM »
Two quick questions:

1.  Are the new 160 GB PS3's backwards compatible with both PS1 and PS2 games?

2.  If the answer was no, where can I get my hands on a 60gb PS3?  Gamestop has them used, and want about a hundred bucks more than what they went for when new.   :banghead

The same link also says that the 60gb are no longer in production... which is really sucky.

And good link here

PS3 has only two good games. AC4A, and FF13 (and that last one is debatable). Why the hell would you want one?

PS3 only has one good game - AC4A.  FF13 is cross-platform now.

FF XIII hasn't come out yet and given Square-Enix's recent track record let's wait before we call it a good game.

The thing that bugs me about the PS3 is that almost every game requires a hard drive installation. The hard drive can fill up pretty quickly if you have a decent sized collection and it takes a decent amount of time to uninstall and reinstall games. and that's to even factoring in other stuff like downloadable games, demos, and other content. I pity those poor souls that only have a 20 Gig PS3

Yeah, after talking to a friend of mine that's a hardcore gamer, I might pass.  the PS3's that are out now aren't backwards compatible at all, the ones that are tend to tear themselves to pieces trying to, and I'm too broke to get a PS3 and replace my ailing PS2.  I might get a new PS2 and get a bluray burner for my computer, cheaper in the long run.

Hopefully they will port the good games over from PS3. Or Microsoft and Nintendo will team up to make a super-platform that bankrupts Sony's gaming investment unless Sony and Apple team up to try and fight the good fight.

That latter option has serious potential.

Dude, if Microsoft and Nintendo teamed up they'd get collectively bought out by "teh Google" as the last step in a plan to take over the world.

...and we'd all love it.

That said, I don't think there are any new PS2s out there anymore.  Refurbished ones are probably best, considering how frail the system can be, but the thing that gets me is that they're still really expensive for a last-gen gaming system.

The slim PS2s have been fairly durable and haven't had the problems that the fat PS2s have had.

$130 for a PS2 is pricey given that you can get a new 360 with games and a memory card for $200.

That said, you're better off just going with the $300 if you plan on using XBox Live at all, or planning on playing more than ~5 games, or probably planning on playing any RPG (I can see Oblivion especially being a real memory whore).

No, you can just buy a hard drive.  It's less expensive.  I only missed out on an HDMI cable which I don't need, and a headset which I also don't need.

You're absolutely right though I imagine you can probably find a good deal on a 20 GB hard drive nowadays.

But still the fact that the PS2 and 360 are fairly close in price shows me that Sony doesn't really know what they're doing. I remember the PS1 being dropped to $50 in its final days, but then again I have a feeling that the PS2 could end up outlasting the PS3 kinda like how the Atari 2600 ended up outlasting both the 5200 and the 7800.
