Planar Chaos Revisited
« on: November 26, 2008, 03:32:58 PM »
For an upcoming campaign, my DM friend has basically given open reign on what to draw our choices from, as long as we get prestige class choices pre-approved by him. The campaign will likely go to around 15th lvl, starting at about lvl 5, and I would like to make a planar chaos mage type.

Since dragon magazine issues owned by this DM are allowed, I was thinking of taking an option that lets me trade familiar and/or scribe scroll (I forget the precise costs) in order to add an alignment descriptor to all my spells corresponding with the character's alignment (in this case, Chaotic) at lvl 1 instead of lvl 10, along with Abyssal specialist. As for this thread, I don't ask for a full build, just a few suggestions:

1. What prestige class should i try to get approved, since i have all those levels open that are not normally open for use of chaotic spell recall?

2. Should I go Focused Specialist (Abyssal)?

3. How many Abyssal heritor feats should I try to acquire in order to make the most of chaotic spell recall without hampering me too much.

The rest of the party consists of a druid, a barbarian going for frenzied berserker, and a rogue that ends up reverse-optimizing more often than not.

I don't know much about the Fiendish Codices, but if you used that option to instead make all your spells evil you could take Spell Focus (evil) from the BoVD, which also qualifies you for the ur-priest PrC. I don't recall a Spell Focus (chaos) feat in any source I have seen, but it shouldn't be too hard to get it approved.

Wild mage (CArc) could be a good option for you. Messing up enemy SLAs so that they turn him purple when he tries to use them is always fun. :D
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Well, one of the things I wanted to aim for with giving my spells the [Chaotic] descriptor was to use the chaotic spell recall feat (Fiendish Codex I, I believe) to recover spent spell slots.

Going with an adaptation of the build I'd put here... Something along those lines would work just fine.

Human Wizard 5 / Escalation Mage 6 / Incantatrix 9

ACFs:
Focused Specialist (Abyssal) - Lose Enchantment and Necromancy (and 6th+ level Illusion, later...)

Feats:
Otyugh's Hole - Iron Will
H - Cloak of the Obyrith
1 - Chaotic Spell Recall
1B - Scribe Scroll => Planar Spellcasting (Chaos)
3 - Precognitive Visions
5B - Extend Spell
6 - Keeper of Forbidden Lore
9 - Residual Magic
12 - Metamagic School Focus (Chaos)
12B - Persistant Spell
15B - Chain Spell
18 - Easy Metamagic (Persistant Spell) (?)
18B -  Twin Spell

Hm, looks interesting. I wonder though, why take the last level of escalation mage over the last level of incantatrix?

Edit:Also, I found the Dragon Magazine sub level in question, Dragon 357. Aligned Caster, replaces familiar.

2 reasons. First, I prefer 5 free Spontaneous Metamagic uses per day over a -1 to all those known. Second, you only get that last ability at level 20, rendering it pointless.

Incantatrix's abilities aren't as amazing as some think without items that boost your Spellcraft by a lot or other major expenditures of resources, at least at low levels. Thus, I find the Escalation Mage better for "Easy" Metamagic at low-mid levels.
