Ways to Expand a Spell List (III)
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:40:08 PM »
Updated and migrated

Specifically I want to list the ways a character can expand a limited spell list. I'm (for some reason) Warmage obsessed these days and that has always been one of my biggest gripes with them. I'm intersted here in ways to add to your spell list, not simply get a spell-like ability.

If you have something to add, please let me know - similarly if you spot a mistake (I'm sure I've made a few), let me know!
• DMG, PHB, MM
 • Complete Arcane, Warrior, Divine, Adventurer
 • Libris Mortis
 • Heroes of Battle
 • Sandstorm
 • Races of Destiny, Races of Stone, Races of the Dragon
 • Draconomicon, Dragon Magic
 • Lords of Madness
 • Book of Exalted Deeds, Book of Vile Darkness
 • Eberron Campaign Setting, Magic of Eberron, Races of Eberron, Players Guide to Eberron, Faiths of Ebeeron, Five Nations
Prestige Classes
Some of these have more obvious entry requirements than others. Things listed as "any" I think really could be managed by "any" class, but it may have some serious pre-reqs. An example would be the "XXX Initiate" feats from the ECS which require summon nature's ally ... this typically only appears on the Druid list but if you added that spell to your list via another means (Recaster, for instance) you could concievably add this to just about any arcane caster (Warmage, for instance).
Book of Exalted Deeds - Celestial Mystic
- Gains Celestial spells

Magic of Eberron - Impure Prince
- Expanded spell list

Heroes of Battle - Combat Medic
- Can lose spells to spontaneously cast heal even if it isn't on your spell list
- not really added to your spell list

Races of Destiny - Loredelver
- Can lose spells to spontaneously cast knock, arcane eye, greater dispel magic
- not really added to your spell list

Races of Stone - Shadowcraft Mage
- Can mimic any wiz/sorc evocation and most conjuratoin spells
- not really added to your spell list

Heroes of Horror - Fiend Blooded
- technically requires arcane casting to get in, but can advance either

Complete Arcane - Blood Magus
- Adds death knell

Complete Arcane - Geometer
- Adds glyph of warding / greater glyph of warding

Complete Arcane - Mage of the Arcane Order- Prc
- Spell pool (new spell ability specifically mentions not being useful for spontaneous casters)

Complete Arcane - Sublime Chord
- Has a merged Bard/Sorc/Wiz list for 4th level and higher spells

Complete Divine - Rainbow Servant
- Adds air, good and law domains
- Grants clerical spell access (and according to the FAQ this means all of them for the Beguilers, Dread Necros, Warmages, etc. out there)

Book of Exalted Deeds - Exalted Arcanist
- Add exalted spells to your spell list

Book of Exalted Deeds - Troubador of the Stars
- Add sanctified spells to your spell list

Five Nations - Silver Pyromancer
- Adds Paladin spells

Races of Eberron - Recaster
- Changeling
- Has two Expanded Knoweldge abilities - each allows the Recaster to add ANY spell from ANY spell list

Races of the Dragon - Dracolexi
- Adds extra spells known, including power-word spells

- Adds domains

Lost Empires of Faerun - Olin Gisir
 - Olin Gisir gets dispel evil, dispel chaos or dispel law at lvl4 and dictum, holy word or word of chaos at lvl8 added to her spell list
Feats
Complete Arcane - Draconic Legacy
- Add set of spells to your list based on your Draconic Heritage
- The first Draconic Heritage feat requires Sorc 1st, but the Legacy feat doesn't MANDATE that you add the spells to Sorcerer class (but I think that would be the most common assumption)

Complete Arcane - Extra Spell
- Add a spell to your list of known / available spells
- can only add class spells to your list of known

Complete Divine - Arcane Disciple
- Add one domain of spells to your class spell list

Player's Handbook II - Celestial Sorcerer Heritage
 - Adds protection from evil ... SORCERER ONLY

Player's Handbook II - Celestial Sorcerer Lore
 - Adds magic circle against evil, tongus & teleport ... SORCERER ONLY

VARIOUS - Initiate Feats
- Adds a list of spells, typically to a divine list

Libris Mortis - Mother Cyst
- Add Cyst spells

Heroes of Horror - Corrupt Arcana
 - allows spontaneous casters to prepare corrupt spells the same way that a wizard or cleric would (and they don't count against your total spells known)

Heroes of Horror - Improved Oneiromancy
 - adds a number of dream-related spells to your list (requires two feats prior)
Alternate Class Features
These are additions that are truly only available to a single class.

- Adds spells to your list based on alignment

Complete Champion - Domain Access
 - Add a domain to your sorc list (lose 1/spell each level)

Warmage
Complete Arcane
- Advanced Learning at specific levels can add wiz/sorc invocation/evocation spell to the list

Players Handbook 2 - Warmage Class
- Eclectic Learning option (replaces Advanced Learning) can add ANY wiz/sorc sepll to the list; treated as one level higher (so a cantrip would be added as 1st level

spell, etc.)
Items
Magic Item Compendium - Runestaves - Item
- allows an arcane caster to expend a slot to cast the spell in the staff

Complete Champion - Domain Staff - Item
- allows a divine caster to expend a slot to cast the spell in the staff

The Corrupt Arcana feat(Heroes of Horror) allows spontaneous casters to prepare corrupt spells the same way that a wizard or cleric would (and they don't count against your total spells known).

I thought the Complete Champion errata limited Spontaneous Divination to Divination spells that you already knew?
This space intentionally left blank.

I'd point you to the final errata of 3.5 that WotC just released, stating that in fact the spell list is expanded for a fixed list caster like a warmage or a beguiler. It's marked big and red.

That makes it automatically the first thing you should mention.

In relation to ...

On a guess I'm going to say you're talking about Rainbow Servant (again, I just ported this over) ... but without a reference I'm not sure to which of the dozens of individual entries you are referring???

If you really want to stretch the rules into something certainly unintended, the Boccob's reading room magical location from Complete Mage could be able to add non-class spells.  The flavor text only specifies prepared and arcane spells - which means that you might be able to go wu-jen to wizard or vice versa and remain within the flavor of the ability.

Quote from: Only relevant part of the description
Upon drawing forth the power
of a Boccob's reading room, a spellcaster who prepares spells
can write one new spell of any level he can cast into his
spellbook...

Sorry, I was referring to rainbow servant. I'll quote it for ease of use.

"If a warmage (CAr 10) gains access to all the cleric
spells though the rainbow servant prestige class (CD 54),
does he really have all those spells to choose from each time
he casts a spell?
If a warmage takes ten levels of rainbow servant, he adds
all of the spells from the cleric spell list to his own spell list and
can choose from all of them when he casts spells."

This wasn't the errata, it was the Master FAQ. However there's some contention about the validity of these answers, and they do say that bloodlines no longer affect your animal companion (but do work for wild shape  :love). I choose to believe them in this case, but I don't really know. It seems widely accepted to work and WotC agrees, so it's pretty solid.

Updated it.

I remember when that FAQ came out.  Seriously, all Warmages are now Rainbow Servants.  Like, all of them.  Beguilers and Dread Necros have other options, but Warmages are pretty much single-threaded now.

There's the Sword of the Arcane Order feat in Champions of Valor that allows paladins and rangers to prepare wizard spells from a spellbook into their spell slots. Things can get interesting since paladins can use the divine metamagic feats so you can see things like DMM: persistant spell on wraithstrike.

Complete Champion - Ordained Champion adds the War Domain - or another domain available through your worship if you have War already.

fix'd.

Winning an argument on the internet is like winning in the Special Olympics.  You won, but you're still retarded.

^Correction: It adds war domain OR a bonus domain granted by your deity, since you naturally chose War Domain for easy entry to Ordained Champion.

Broken !!
Scrolls can be written into a Wizard's spellbook, regardless of divine/arcane.
But I don't know how that works exactly ... maybe someone who knows that could chime in ??

Psionics doesn't really fit here, but ...
Erudite Spell to Power option gets all Arcanes onto Psionic, though you have to learn them one at a time.
Erudite Discipline option - which has gotten Zero zero play - can with Dragon #349 feat Chameleon Crafting, make School/Discipline powerstones of Divine spells, and then learn them on it's list.

Chameleon Crafting feat can make scrolls of psionic powers, and then get them all on the Wizard list, as above.

Less obvious, but more legit, Wish, Limited Wish, Miracle, Anyspell, Bend Reality, and Reality Revision
can morph any divine/arcane/psionic onto any list; give or take some minor arguing.  :)

Epic Spells are all the same, except the 2 seeds an Arcane only can't use; psi can use them, but at much higher dc's, yawn.

That doesn't change the actual spell list though, that gets you the ability to use it.  Like UMDing a scroll.

These are ways that get things irrevocably on your spell list.

What about all the items in the MIC that let you cast spells, een if they aren't on your spell list?

Spells available:

1st - Magic Missile, Divine Favor (Divine only)
3rd - Fireball (DC 14, though)
4th - Freedom of Movement, Death Ward (Divine only), Divine Power (Divine only)
5th - Teleport
Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of unanimity.

:( , oh now I get it. When I'm not signed on to the site, sblocks don't show up on my browser. Weird.
I can see clearly now, sign-on is gone. Da-doo beepy doo.

**

Y'know, what I was trying for on my little Magewright thread at 339, was to see if there was some sort of Cap, on spell lists,
if Magewright or Adept were the only casters. Turns out, there's not much of a limit at all.
Miracle is on Domain lists, so that gets all 7s, and all Cleric 8s.
9s are restricted to Cleric Domains, Corrupt, Mother Cyst, etc ...
and that's just not going into the PrCs at all.

the Olin Gisir gets dispel evil, dispel chaos or dispel law at lvl4 and dictum, holy word or word of chaos at lvl8 added to her spell list.

hm. is it possible to build an arcane holy word bomb?

[edit] oh. the olin gisir is in 'lost empires of faerun'
[edit2] and you should remove the spontaneous divination, because it says in the errata that you can only cast spells you know.
[edit3] Godsblood Spelltheft let's you cast Domain spells with your stolen spell-energy. you find the feat here. technically it doesn't add the spells to your spell list, but when your DM agrees, that it's possible to steal your own spells, you can cast them spontaneously :-)
