Not a summon monster; a homebrew summon ritual; so, yes, the balor went all asplodey. We survived through Evasion (three PCs have it), great heaps of hit points (and being a troll), and, in one PC's case, being outside the blast radius.
It should've been you, Bendo!

Besides, even summon monster 9 can only get you up to a hezrou or bebelith. Odds are it's something a little more potent than a normal summons.

This was a moment when the rules/random luck spanked the DM, instead of the PCs, but it was definitely an Epic Moment...

I was in a long-running campaign, which we'd played from level 1 in 2nd edition AD&D up till about 14th level 3.0 D&D. There was this NPC that had been with the group for a little while, and had finally started to gain our trust. He was along when our group found a Deck of Many Things. He took his turn, and as luck would have it, he drew the card that reverses your alignment...

The DMs eyes got really big, and he swore for about five minutes, then the NPC turned to us and said "Guys, there is something I have to tell you..." It turned out that he was an infamous assasin who had just been biding his time to murder us all in our sleep. After that, he turned himself in for his crimes, and was fit with some kind of "instadeath device" that the king controlled, and forced to be a mercenary for the king basically. :D

A couple of water benders, a dike, a flaming arrow, and a few barrels of blasting jelly?

Sounds like the makings of a gay porn film.
...thanks

another one i just remembered about.

Playing a Paladin using an over sized war hammer, 3.0 and didn't have stats on a maul. Background info needed: This guy was the son of a paladin and an evil female warrior that had seduced him before he knew she was evil. Father was killed by mother at a later date, mother left my character to be raised by a woman she trusted.  Mother was killed in battle my character was given her dagger as the rest of her stuff was looted.  My paladin is fighting monsters through out the house and gets disarmed by one, so he pulls out his mother's dagger and begins fighting with it.  Roll critical fumble and break the dagger in half, dm has a table that they roll on if fumble so wasn't DM messing with me. Once monster is defeated the paladin is very upset as it was the only thing he had of his mother. He stoically continues through the House.  We eventually get to the final fight which should be very difficult, against the maw of the house. 1st round i declare i am smiting evil. Me: *roll* natural 20, DM: roll to confirm crit, Me: *roll* natural 20 again, DM: * ??? :o* Roll for instakill (optional rule we use from dmg), Me: *roll* natural 20 a third time DM: :bigeye :fo. I rolled damage just for fun and it would have been most of the creatures hit points anyway.  My character got revenge on that damed house for breaking a simple mw dagger.  Proof that the dice know what your character is feeling and act on their behalf sometimes.
Clerics and Druids are like the 4 and 2 in 42. Together they are the answer to the ultimate question in D&D.
Retire the character before the DM smacks you with the Table as the book will feel totally inadequate now.-Hazren

Running a campaign during my last deployment, my party decides to travel back through a jungle they had explored to see an NPC for information. The group is mostly melees, so it is both easy and hard on me. Easy because they don't have spells, hard because they don't have spells. You get the picture.

So I decide to have them ambushed by gnolls the same as they were last time. I want them to get a little revenge as they got sniped a bit but couldn't catch the enemy last time. So it's deja vu all over again as they are rowing to shore. Until the bard asks "Are we within 440ft of them?"

Sure, I say. Why the hell so specific? I've forgotten what a couple levels can do. You can probably guess what happens.

Bard Dimension Doors the cleric, fighter, and monk right behind the ambush party. Gnolls don't notice, slaughter ensues. Completely surprised me, the party had a morale boost, mission accomplished.

This was me as a DM, but the players thought this was funny.

Basically, they were hunkered down in an old toolshed avoiding a nasty hailstorm.  When the hail died down, they get a knock on the door:

"Mrs. Argleburzgh?"

Players:  "What"

"Mr. Fossertragle?"

Players:  "Who is it?"

"Messenger"

Bard opens the door.  Bulette on the other side of the door bites her on the head immediately after.

The fight was more dramatic than actually threatening, the bulette ripped the side of the shed completely off to fit inside.  He managed to deal some damage, but fled after taking too much.  However, much fun was had by all.

One of my best was probably when my Changeling Soulknife/Crusader/Warshaper, who had changed shape to look like the evil Dwarf badguy, took down a Dalkyer Half-blood Gaurd Captain in single combat in one hit when the guy didn't believe i was who I was disguised as, over the matter of besmirching my honour.  :D

Needless to say the other guards fell into line immediatly afterwards, with the rest of the party, acting as my slaves, and I being escorted the rest of the way to our destination via honour guard with all the traps and defences disabled.  :smirk
