"Because I'm witty and charming."
Madoc removes his right glove, revealing the devilish runes on the back of his hand.
"And because I have friends in low places. Killing me would annoy people you don't want to annoy. There. Two reasons, at least one of them good."

Borloth throws back his head and laughs.  "Wit and charm?  Meaningless.  And your friends?  Why should I care about them?  You act as if death is meaningful.  Let me be more specific.  What use are you to me?"

Madoc points again to his hand, then dons his glove once more.
"For the same reason I'm useful enough to get this. I can talk fast enough to make devils think twice. You might not put much by words, but wit and charm can get you into a lot of places. Some of those places have things you need, or people you want dead. Anyway, the mark is a contract. I can call on my side of the bargain whenever I need. So killing me wouldn't be as easy as you assume."

Borloth shakes his head.  "You're not the only one with powers, though mine run in my blood and I've paid a price for that.  You're lucky I'm lucid."  He then cocks his head as if listening to someone, then nods.  His somewhat speech changes, going from intelligent sounding and vaguely threatening to become deeper and duller.  His head starts to twitch back and forth. "Mark of a devil is good reference.  Devils do law and order, follow code, though can be twisty-turny.  Swear won't attempt to harm brother and I'll let you speak with him.  He makes decisions."  Suddenly, Borloth picks a leftover fork off the table and jabs it into his thigh.  He breathes in sharply, then exhales with a dreamy smile on his face.  His speech patterns return to 'normal'.  "Sorry, was losing control.  Pain helps focus, separate reality from hallucination.  What I said still stands, however."

Regema returns from his absence quietly.  "It's no matter either way, Borloth.  Any attempt to harm me is like a lamb running to the slaughter.  If he wishes to give up his life's essence then I'll use it well," Regema says with a dark grin.  "That said, someone who has already made a pact with hell spawn will prove useful.  The unholy powers of mighty devils can no doubt be put to use augmenting an undead army."

Regema sits next to his brother.  "Tell me, what is your name?  Where have you come from?  You are at the disadvantage here, so you should answer our questions first.  Once that's done, we can likely let you in on our plans."
Sorry for the slow posting, finals week + upcoming holidays + neighbors that overstay their welcome = very little time to post.  I'll get much better around the end of December.
"Like I told your friend here, my name is Madoc. I'm from Marleath originally, else I wouldn't recognise a ritual-priest when I saw one, but it's been years since I've been home. Our dear Patriarch doesn't take too kindly to unauthorised outside pacts. More recently, I've been hiding in this backwater after one of my plans went belly-up, and you two sparked my curiosity. You don't see many death-marked in rural taverns, especially not with a guardian escort."
Madoc shifts in his seat, his face turning slightly sour.
"And I'll tell you this for nothing. Don't work with surface-born any more than you have to. They don't know what "discipline" means."

"I see.  Very interesting...  Well, if you must know, we have been 'sent' on a mission from a higher-ranking priest," Regema starts with tones of sarcasm tinging the latter part of his sentence.  "We must eventually return to the mines with at least 100 slaves in tact, the weaker half of which will be given to us as a reward."  Regema grimaces at that last bit, and talks a little quicker for the details: "Obviously there aren't enough suitable creatures for our purposes in this backwater, which is why I decided that we should lay low until more can be found, and perhaps even played against the people of this village to save us the trouble of having to kill them all ourselves, even though Borloth here will probably kill most of them anyway."

"You could be of help to us in this task.  Perhaps once that's done we might talk about further goals."  Regema said, trailing off.  "Given your power, you might even be able to raise a few of them yourself, no?  That would greatly expedite this matter."

"Raising the dead is not one of my talents, but if you need to manipulate the living you won't be disappointed. And who knows? Perhaps a new contingent of slaves will get me a bit more good grace with the powers that be. I'd be glad to help. As for the future, we can see how one endeavour goes before we plan the next." Madoc sits back, a little more relaxed for knowing he has some sort of ally in the town. "Anything else? Or should I go get some more sleep?"

"Sleep if you must.  I must go and think about what we shall do tomorrow.  I suppose we shall see what happens then."  Regema says before leaving the room.

"Well, then, see you in the morning." Madoc stands and heads back to his room, where, after a quick nap, he renews his pact with the Grinning Hound. For today, Naberius shares his soul, but not his mind.

Reassembling downstairs in the morning, the three men glanced at one another, still not entirely comfortable with their sudden meeting. Only with caution did they sit at the same table, shifting the chairs to provide as much space as possible between the two brothers and the new arrival. Only carefully did they break into speech, discussing topics of little import, still dancing around one another and their partnership.

During their conversation, the farmer who had spoken to them the day before came in, grabbing some food from behind the bar. Exiting as quickly as he came in, the farmer winked at Borloth and Regema.

Madoc sits back, glad he can watch both of his new comrades at the same time.
"So I take it that was our new patron. Are we taking up his offer?"
