Wow!  This is really funny-- I never really knew what it was, just that I would get teased by my father something horrid for the way I said "kitten".  I still don't really hear the difference, but never really realized it was with all tt words.

You're onto something!

I don't think it's an accent, just the way I learned phonemes.

Interesting aside- I had a lisp growing up.  Pretty bad one.  Went to years of speech therapy and everything.  I didn't hear that either.  I do a lot of professional work now on literacy and am pretty sure it's because I had chronic ear infections as a child so I learned language without properly hearing it.

Course the Speech Therapy gave me TMJ, but that's just one more link in an interesting chain of events.

I grew up in the Northeast and it's a common inflection that I believe is used to 'speed' the pronunciation of Propoer British speech. Similarly, my wife laughs at my use of T'day and Yest'day for today and yesterday. I'm guilty of it but, as Meg would say, I can speak wicked fast.

Somehow this chain ends with a reference to dentata, doesn't it?

Actual table rule, we had to get Zeke to stop interfering [mock humping] with the person trying to take their turn.

i could be way off base, but have always associated the middle T dropping with a new york/new jersey/philly accent.. i havent nailed it down any more than that...

Keep in mind that New England is a big place. Multiple states. When most people think of "New England Accent", they're thinking of a specific Boston regional accent. (Not even all of Boston talks like the Kennedys.)

Now that's really funny-- I was born in Philly and first lived in South Jersey where my parents spent their whole life.  I did have a slight new jersey accent growing up and worked to get rid of it (Josh still begs me to say "wuter" for water so he can laugh).

Zeke is our resident accent-ologist and says the tt thing is pretty common of that area.

Huh.  Who knew.

You mean 'Both' doesn't rhyme with 'Llolth'?

Meg does it, as do many of my American friends. You pronounce 'Both' with an l in it. 'Bolth.'

(Josh still begs me to say "wuter" for water so he can laugh).

That was my favorite part of the late 90s tech bubble - I got the chance to hear and laugh at more regional dialects than I even knew existed.

(If you are taking requests, please say 'wuter' and 'wursh' next episode)

I soooo say it that way (bolth)! I was born in midwest...

I lisped when I was younger too... mainly in kindergarten... but that was mainly because I liked making that sound and I loved to annoy my parents and teachers. They were clearly concerned, but I was having a ball with saying sthar instead of star.  :shrug

There are a few things I still say weirdly... and some words I just cannot say. Like analgous-can't say it, and there are other ones too, but they escape me.

One thing that drives me nuts is people who pronounce library as libary. I clench my teeth whenever I hear it.

Nuke-u-lar it's pronounced Nuke-u-lar

Zeke and I use the made up mispronunciation "tomorry"

Actually Zeke and I use dozens of made up words and phrases.  We have to be careful to exclude them from the podcast to keep from confusing people.

"Nucular" is in fact a recognized (albeit not approved) pronunciation .

Fucking sad.  Blame Eisenhower.

That reminds me a lot of Clockwork Orange. I couldn't finish that book because of all the made up words. I felt like I was translating Spanish! >.>;;

Wow. So glad I don't pronounce any of these words incorrectly. The worst I have is that my speech impediment as a child was an issue with pronouncing the letter R. Took years of speech therapy and I still don't feel like I pronounce it correctly...

Putting the L in both helps with enunciation.

Without the L it can become "boat."
