X-Codes - some would say Cloverfield, but others would disagree.

The American version of Godzilla was Godawful, off the top of my head I'd say the last good monster movie may have been John Carpenter's The Thing.

I like monster movies mostly.  I never really liked more general horror flicks, and I must say that modern horror pictures have faced the same steady decline in quality that most of Hollywood's works have in recent years.

That said, maybe at some point in time a girl will convince me to go into the theater with her to watch a scary movie so that she has a bodyguard to huddle against to keep her safe from the monsters.

That reminds me... when was the last truly awesome monster movie?  Alien?  Every once and a while I remember to look for new monster movies and... they just don't exist!

What do you look for in a monster film?  The Host was pretty good if you dont mind Korean movies.  The first Tremors was okay.

Probably the last horror movie I watched was Dog Soldiers.
I really liked it, even if it probably wasn't the greatest of movies. It was fun and refreshing and British :D

1) Butt ugly monster.  Anything with a modicum of cuteness can create sympathy, which kills the movie.

2) Lots of people dying in the struggle to kill the monster.  Nothing to be really scared of if it can't or won't kill you.

3) Some kind of unique angle.  If it's just monster shows up, monster kills a lot of people, hero kills monster, then it's not going to be that entertaining.  Something about the setting or the monster itself has to change up the way the movie works.  Going with the Alien example, they're on a space ship.  They're isolated, can't escape, and are stuck with the really fucking ugly monster.

I saw some of an old movie called Reefer Madness, and decided that that would be the last I saw of very old movies.  I've also seen old movies that involved aliens or robots and the outfits were somewhat ludicrous by today's standards.  Many of them just don't hold up, and the dialogue in some of them almost seems satirical when you watch them today.  I'll admit that there are almost certainly a few timeless classics from that age, but honestly I'm too restless to go and sit through all of 'em.

I think I have something like 300+ DVD's, most of them horror/scifi/cult/exploitation films...
Got Shiver of the vampires?

The Jean Rollin movie?  It's currently only available from Redemption, and their stuff is pretty hard to find stateside, at least in Ohio.  I've always thought about getting it but I'm told it's one of the worst films ever.
Fixed. The entire series is quite crap, but that's exactly why I like it. Camp movies for the win.

I watched The Host with a couple friends... we had to leave before I finished the movie, but man...

I've never watched a Korean film before, so let me ask.  Is the constant farting/nail picking/booger eating a norm in Korean movies?  I mean, the monster thing was kinda cool, and I guess the storyline was okay, but I was just fixated on how fucking weird the characters were.  You got homedude that shits himself regularly, and his dad that seems to think this is acceptable, and a couple other people that are strange/gross/funny in their own right.   Very odd movie, all in all.  Its coming on G4 in a couple days, and I'm gonna watch it again to sate my morbid curiousity.

I thought Cloverfield was an good monster movie.

Some horror films I've liked

28 days later
Shaun of the Dead
28 weaks Later
Cloverfield(horror maybe)
Van Helsing (I question horror hear too)
Pans Labyrinth (again I question horror)

Only two movies I can think of ever scared me, one was When Mars Attacks (that gave me so many nightmares when I was little), and the very last sequence after the credits in the remake of dawn of the dead (I have a powerfull fear of zombies).  Highschool of the Dead (manga) is pretty good, as is Gantz(horror maybe), and World War Z(book).

The fact that World War Z incorporates Iron Maiden's The Trooper already makes it awesome as far as I'm concerned, although I'm ashamed to admit I haven't gotten around to reading it yet  :-[

The family was supposed to be fucked up and dysfunctional, and quite frankly many Korean films don't have the most experienced writers, so they went for that as a way to inject some humor.  They make cool ghost stories though.  Most of the Korean ffilms I've seen have been incredibly bad, except for ghost stories.

Look up Mondo Macabro, especially the Devil's Sword.  There are some railers on youtube.  Most hallucinogenic fantasy film I've ever seen.  Actually most all of Mondo Macabro's vids are either hilariously bad, and/or off kilter.

Cyrocloud: So you question Cloverfield's horror, but you list Shaun of the Dead?

Well, the monster seemed more misunderstood than evil in Cloverfield(I'd be pissed if people started shooting and dropping bombs on me too).  And I ****ing hate zombies, and they are the central focus of my nightmares (plus, shaun of the dead had been used a few times before).

I love scary movies.

The movies that scared me the most were The Ring, The Grudge, The Descent, Aliens and Blair Witch Project.

I want to Quarantine- it looks like The Descent but in a building.

my mrs loves terrible / horror movies... if someone gets decapitated then all their friends die because they cant our run a stationary killer, she will love it.. her absolute favorite is 'The Entity' a total piece of crap..

i find its a very rare thing for a movie to be both good and horror / scary. i like most of cyro's list the 28s were good, pan's was excellent.. children of men..

despite the lack of quality i like phantasm 2,

i cant stand the japanese horror remakes.. those that meg listed..

while i wasnt overly fond of cloverfield, i will say it out blair witched the blair witch.. the BW 3 was the best of that pile of crap..

the grindhouse did a great job of one uping the 70s gore flicks..

i liked the first hostel and saw, not the sequels..

the old b&w the Thing is really good..

if gore, and/ or a menacing killer is all you have to offer, im not going to like it.. except for phantasm which has the car..

scream did a great job of suspense, but its not overly rewatchable..

the og night of the living dead was the first movie to give me nightmares.. i think i was 9... staying across the hall with neighbors on halloween.. i had never seen anything like it... 'there coming to get you Barbara' , actually what did it was the couple trying to get to the car and gas.. for the record this was 1983? so if your under 25 i dont wanna hear it.. :)

quarantine has potential...

i just read a terrible review of blindness, i had been looking forward to that..

anyway, give me legosi and lon channey over eli roth any day..

Inform the missus that FOX intends to remake the Entity.  I'm wondering who they're gonna get for this movie.  "Yes Mrs. Alba, we need you to get butt raped for an hour and a half by an invisible monster.....Mrs. Alba??...Hello?...Helo???"
