Is there a feat to stop paladins?
« on: September 07, 2008, 02:40:26 PM »
I'm trying to build a paladin killer character. We're playing an evil party in a week or so (starting at lvl 6) and I've been trying to focus on ways to incapacitate paladins. The mageslayer feat is something nice, since I've been thinking of having a weapon with reach, but is there a way to disable the lay on hands ability and/or smite?

The only thing that pops to mind right now is a grappler. Any other solutions?

Well, the Supernatural Opportunist feat from Tome of Magic would give you an attack of opportunity every time they tried to smite or Lay on Hands, but really, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Well that's a REALLY good feat!! It's a start you know! Why shouldn't I worry though?

Paladins aren't that strong - good clerics are a far greater threat. Sneak attack deals more damage than smite evil. Lay on Hands isn't powerful enough to be efficient in combat.
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:

Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.[/spoiler]

+1. Paladins are not that big a threat at all. Their LoH is inferior to a single healing spell of appropriate level even if they burn it all at once, Smite is just some attack and damage (which can still miss), and well that's it. Just make sure you're at least half decent from an overall power perspective and you have absolutely nothing to worry about from a Paladin or any other Tier 5 class.

Sunic may be more abrasive than sandpaper coated in chainsaws (not that its a bad thing, he really does know what he's talking about), but just posting in this thread without warning and telling him he's an asshole which, if you knew his past experiences on WotC and Paizo is flat-out uncalled for. Never mind the insults (which are clearly 4Chan-level childish). You say people like Sunic are the bane of the internet? Try looking at your own post and telling me you are better than him.

Here's a fun fact: You aren't. By a few leagues.

The Shivering Touch spell gets them every time.  Paladins tend to have a poor touch AC and low Dex due to MAD, so a Maximized Shivering Touch will take them out.  Sometimes you don't even have to Maximize it.

Also... Paladins are pretty weak in general.  Just squish them.  A basic charger or tripper should be able to handle them easily.  Or a Druid could turn into a bear and eat them.  Or whatever.

Heck, judicious use of druid also works.

Best method to incapaciate paladins: Insist that they be written up using only the core, official rules. Nothing from outside the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide (Monster Manual for race if you insist).

After that, its a process of finding out if you like them chopped, bashed, skewered, fried, frozen...

The class blows like a Las Vegas hooker (variants and supplements might assist that, but I'm strongly inclined to doubt it.). Go for their Touch AC, their Reflex Save, their Will save (Ironically), straight up combat (There's an enhancement in the Book of Vile Darkness, forget the name, that halves the holy damage of a holy weapon, if my memory isn't playing tricks on me) as a fighter or something equally far superior at clobbering, and attack from a distance too.

Feints+Sneak attacks optional.

Basically, anything that you'd describe as a "strong character" that doesn't target Fortitude saves (their only real strong suit) or need to spread fear and disease.
Faith can move mountains. It still can't deflect bullets.

"Communication with humans." is a cross-class skill for me. Please bear this in mind.

Completely false.  Paladins are immune to disease.

How is the ability to suck hard related to STDs, JaronK?

The joke is that hookers are oft-disease ridden. Thus, a Paladin is better than a whore because a BJ from one will not give you herpes.

It's not a feat, but there's a 2nd level cleric spell in the Spell Compendium called Divine Interdiction.  You can cast it on an area or a creature, and everyone within a radius (10 feet?) cannot use turn or rebuke undead attempts, which also stops divine feats.

Do something that forces a paladin to do what you want or lose his divine powers.

Assuming the paladin isn't a PC (it could cause the player to get angry with you), put him in a 'you lose your paladin status either way' bind (because you're evil). If it IS a PC, distract him with a burning orphanage (etc).

Paladins are royally screwed by their code. It makes them even worse than they already are.
