Of modrons...
« on: August 25, 2008, 04:08:49 PM »
They could be better. </obvious>

I was just thinking of how the modrons seem to act on a "great plan", and how it has been commented that the "great plan" is so complex that it is indistinguishable from the behaviour of the slaadi (utter randomness) to an outside observer.

Then it struck me. Each modron has, according to their descriptions, very specific inputs and outputs. At the lowest levels, they can perform only a single task, which they do with utmost precision. All of these modrons are gears in a great machine, et cetera, et cetera.

However, this description of modrons sounds very much like the nodes in a neural net. Each neuron in the brain performs a perfectly logical task, yet the human mind is far from raw logic. The great machine is not a computer, it is a very human mind. If we take Primus as the physical representation of this consciousness, he could be a perfectly normal being, rather than the Spock-wannabe he is often portrayed as. In fact, he could well be insane...
My work
The tier system in a nutshell:
Tier 6: A cartographer.
Tier 5: An expert cartographer or a decent marksman.
Tier 4: An expert marksman.
Tier 3: An expert marksman, cartographer and chef who can tie strong knots and is trained in hostage negotiation or a marksman so good he can shoot down every bullet fired by a minigun while armed with a rusted single-shot pistol that veers to the left.
Tier 2: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything, or the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
Tier 1: Someone with teleportation, mind control, time manipulation, intangibility, the ability to turn into an exact duplicate of anything and the ability to see into the future with perfect accuracy.
And probably is...

Similarly, beings of pure good should act indistinguishably from beings of pure evil - mortal minds cannot comprehend the motivations of creatures so far removed from mundane concerns and all that.

(I mean, really, an angel shows up to smite everyone in your village because 100 years from now one of them will be the g-g-grandparent of an avatar of an evil god.  Is this really distinguishable from an demon's actions?)

Interesting...let's take this a step further. What if Primus is not the total consciousness, but merely the superego? You have to have an id, of course...

...Ygorl! Or Ssendam. Or all the Slaad Lords...the multiverse has a multiple-personality disorder, and the slaadi are merely corrupted modrons (or the modrons are corrupted slaadi; your choice).

Balderdash. When "Good" starts massacring innocents to prevent a possible-maybe-could-someday-happen evil, it becomes evil. That's why true Good is harder to deal with: you have to take the moral high ground even when you know it will come back and hurt you later.
It should've been you, Bendo!
