Room mates
« on: August 22, 2008, 02:51:03 PM »
So, I moved in to my apartment for college yesterday.  Three guys I'd never met before were selected for me.  I walked into this really hoping I'd get along with them and not have to smash heads.  Well, I'm getting along well with one of them and the other two don't seem to be people I'll have trouble with (just introverts, harmless).  So, I'm pleasantly surprised.  I thought I'd share that.

If it's anything like the way most people experience college one, if not two of them will end up pissing you off beyond all belief. :P

But it's good they haven't done so already. :D

That is excellent news! Even introverts can turn out to be damn nice people (I know, I have plenty of experience about that) and I suppose you four have a lot of time.

Keep sexual innuendos for yourself, at least for now. Those might make the situation a bit awkward.

One of the introverts even studies, so I can use him as a resource to learn how.

A little late for that.  All three are aware that I have the highest crazy factor.

Sounds like a terrible nerd, steer away from him.

It's funny -- I met my girlfriend's suitemates the other day.  All of them are pretty sane except two people -- my girlfriend's roommate, and this one girl that clearly falls into the category of "would be the craziest if it weren't for those insane fuckers in Suite C."  (That being my gf and her roommate.)
Anyway, this cake is great!  It's so delicious and moist.

I'm hoping to make a 4.0 this year, so I actually need to study somewhat.

So pause a sec. You went to college, so they make you take three other guys into your apartment? Do you mean college dorm, maybe? ???

It's like a dorm, but better than the nicest dorm on campus.  It's twitchy.  A dorm by any other name if you will.

I have, historicly, had VERY bad luck with roomamtes... and that is with me even picking them.

Maybe I'd actually have better luck with a random selection...  :D

I thought you'd get your own room. Heh.
It has rooms with their own lock all connected to a common area.  So, yeah.  We do have our own rooms.  One kitchen, one living room type area, and two bathrooms are shared between four people though.

They call it a suite, a lot of times.  Well, I guess if you have a kitchen amongst yourselves...still, sounds like a pretty sweet setup and as long as your roommates aren't total douchebags, you should be OK.

My best, and really only, advice is to establish early who's in charge of which chores.

You'll want written evidence of the labor division. Then you'll have proof when some task is left undone.

Depends on what kind of apartments you have. If all have separate, lockable rooms with only a small corridor with a shared kitchen and bathroom there are not too many chores to do. Everyone cleans his own room, does his own dishes and so forth. Only some general dusting left.

The bathrooms will be the big issue, me thinks.

Same here. The police would be hunting me for three cruel murders in a matter of hours after I met my room mates.

Yeah, I didn't mind my roommate at all at first (last year), but by second quarter he annoyed me and by Spring quarter there were times I wanted to punch him in the face, but by the end of the year I didn't mind anymore. It didn't help though that most of my dorm (66 people) hated him though.
