Any rules for sleep deprivation?
« on: August 17, 2008, 06:46:40 AM »
Hey guys,
While running the weekly game yesterday, we realized that the PCs hadn't slept for almost 48 hours. I quickly looked in the MSRD for any rules, but couldn't find any.
The only thing I could find was the droid/robot's rejuvenation cycle rules, which grants a -1 penalty to attack rolls, skills, ability checks, etc... for each day (24hrs?) without 'sleep'/rejuvenation.

Have I missed the rules for humans?

Thanks,

Tema

I vaguely remember reading something about fatigue, I'm not sure if it's relevant to a situation about lack of sleep, or rather over exhaustion. I'm not at home right now but I'll have a look through the SRD and see if I can dig it up.

Looks good, Nemafow. Any thoughts on when what condition sets in?

If you're fatigued and you do something else that would normally cause you to become fatigued, you become exhausted. Exhausted is pretty nasty. I could understand extending the rest requirement, but not all races require the same amount of rest.

In standard d20 Modern, race = humans. If not, it will be specified by "Shadow Chasers with Elves and blah blah" or "Future with Aliens blah blah".

So my question is for humans, as it seems there is a lack of sleep-rules in the d20 ruleset.

And I know fatigued + fatigued = exhausted, but how many hours without sleep would that represent?

Well, it is stated in the PHB that if you don't rest for the night, you become fatigued. A second night would put that to exhausted.

Then it states that 1 hour of rest would set you back to fatigued, and another 8 to get to back to normal. In other words, 9 hours total to get you back to normal status.

At least, that is how I read it.

So I wasn't hallucinating (about that). :D That's what I remembered, also. I wonder why it's in the PHB, but not the SRD... Or maybe I just failed my Search check...

I agree with AndyJames.

First night = fatigued, second night = exhausted.

I'd make exhausted last till a proper nights rest of straight 9 hours sleep. -2 with movement penalties seems a bit light for someone without any rest.. My opinion though, I'm a bastard DM.

I would also think of some kind of fortitude save if the players still decide to keep at it without sleeping after 72 hours.

Awesome, guys, thanks.

I agree with Nemafow.

How about: At any time where an exhausted PC (or a PC who hasn't slept for 72 hours) has not moved or attacked for a number of rounds equal to his Constitution score, he must make a Fortitude save DC 10, every round, until he falls asleep. For every round after the first, the save increases by 1. If the PC is standing up, he gets a +2 to the save, but if he is lying down, he takes a -2 to the check.

Heh yeah that works, and it should be culmutative as well.

For example if MrSleepy starts taking tests and passes 4 tests (10, 11, 12, 13) and then starts fighting some badies, after the fight he stops to take his breath, the tests should continue starting at fort 14, then 15, ect..

I would say that -2 seems pretty accurate for the first day, at fatigued. Your body has a tendency to shoot chemicals through your body to wake you up when it is convinced you aren't going to sleep, but after that you come down harder, it happens again after a few hours, rollercoaster. The longest I have gone without sleep is somewhere around 36 hours, so I can't say about the exhausted rules.
The more I see of people, the more I love my dog.

I've gone 72 hours without real sleep (2-3 hours in all, max), and around 48 hours with no sleep at all. I wasn't worth anything after the first 24-30 hours. I have a few nights a month were I really can't sleep, which my girlfriend hates, because 'apparently' (;)), I get 'really annoyed, real fast' after 24 hours without sleep. And I'm sure she's right. :D

I just get light-headed (though that's probably more likely due to the fact that when I stay up that long, I'm usually studying or writing essays and don't really give eating much thought) and quiet (I stop talking, but when I do talk (such as if someone engages me in conversation), it's usually abnormally quicker than usual).
