Inspired by the Character Optimization boards, instead of optimizing one or two characters, how would you build the 'perfect' or 'your favourite' team of PCs.
Please note what they'd be good at, and what kind of setting they should be in. You are welcome to post past or present PC groups as well.

I'll start with one - assuming most gaming groups consist of 4 PCs:

#1: The Few...

Setting: War/Conflict/Military (For example: WW2)
Forte: Tactical Operations

PC 1: The team leader - adept at talking down both foes and 'friends', he keeps the team coherent and is an excellent tactician. In combat, he relies more on gathering information, spotting the enemy, and directing fire. Weapon of choice: Carbine or other short-ranged weapon (For example: M1 Carbine).
PC 2: The CQB specialist - the first one to enter confined spaces, this character is good at short ranged shooting and hand to hand combat. Second in command. Weapon of choice: Shotgun, Submachinegun or Carbine (For example: M12 Combat Shotgun or a 9mm Sten Submachinegun).
PC 3: Open slot - could include a scout, a grenadier, a medic, an engineer or a marksman, depending on the campaign type.
PC 4: The support - able to carry excessive weights and heavy weapons, this PC provides the team with both medium and long range suppressive and cover fire, as well as to engage targets with accurate bursts over long distances with his light machinegun. He normally carries most of his shares of supplies and ammo for the rest of the team, and if possible, uses a secondary weapon with ammo compatible to one of the others' weapon (For example: 9mm Sten Submachinegun). Weapon of choice: Light or Medium Machinegun (For example: M1919 Light Machinegun or BAR Automatic Rifle).



Here's the group I GM:

#2: Horrock's Own

Setting: Alternate History WW2
Forte: Assault Force

PC 1: A relatively good shot and an experienced tactician, Vasilij isn't a very good leader of men. He knows a lot of people though, and has made contacts and thanks to his late father's influence, most of these people are friendly. Weapon of choise: French MAS 1949 7.5x54mm Rifle.
PC 2: A good close quarter battle specialist, Walker is a good non-field engineer, but lacks the skill of a real combat engineer. He fires his pump-action shotgun just as fast as others can fire automatic weapons. A good tactician and second in command to Vasilij, Walker actually often leads the team instead of Vasilij. Weapon of choice: M12 12gauge Combat Shotgun.
PC 3: A maniac to the bone, Llowa is at best mediocre with a rifle. Compensating for this, he could knock out a bull with his bare hands. Extremely mentally unstable, he has begun lacerating his foes, even after their death. Weapon of choice: Stolen kitchen knife.
PC 4: A deflected German paratrooper, Kurt Baessler excels at medium range combat and is capable of long range combat as well. He is also trained in various explosives, and is an excellent scout thanks to his good eyesight and ability to create camouflaged positions. Weapon of choice: FG42 rifle.
PC 5: An American all the way, Ranger Bill Wells is a M1919 machinegunner, but since he lost his assistant, he has used his Light Machinegun more like a Squad Automatic Weapon, as he is strong enough to use a M1919 like others use a BAR. Weapon of choice: M1919 Machinegun and custom built .357 Smith and Wesson...

3: Seventy Second Echelon
Setting: International Espionage
Forte: Assassinations
PC1: Team Leader - specializes in communications and tactics. Team Leader's job is co-ordinating the team to get in, get out, and, hopefully, only have killed one person. Weapon: SOCOM, Silenced SMG
PC2: Face - specializes in disguise, misdirection and psychology. Face's job is to get information, sabotage security, and remain in the occupation of the target. Weapon: Knife, Silenced Pistol
PC3: Sniper - specializes in stealth, infiltration, marksmanship, and tactic. Second-in-command. Sniper's job is taking out cameras, guards, targets, and anything else that needs shooting from quite a long ways away. Weapon: Silenced Rifle, SOCOM
PC4: Comp Tech - specializes in computers, technology, security, and demolitions. Comp Tech's job is to disable security, hack systems, and repair faulty equipment. Weapon: SOCOM
PC5: Assault - specializes in infiltration, CQC, and stealth. Assault's job is a full blown silent assault on the area.. Weapon: Silenced Carbine, SOCOM, Knife
PC6: Backup - specializes in repairs, medicine,  gear, research, assault, and driving/piloting. Backup's job is to backup the team with repairs, healing, research, getting the necessary equipment, backing up Assault, and being the driver/pilot. Weapon: Silenced PDW


4: Return of the Living Dream Horror: The Final Chapter, Part 9
Setting: B-Horror
Forte: Sex, Dying in a gruesome fashion
PC1: Heroine - A hot teen girl with giant breast, a virginity taken by either the killer or a short lived boyfriend, and the common sense of a pina colada. Specializes in being hot, providing moral support, creating deus ex machinica, and returning in the sequel
PC2: Slut - A slightly less hot teen nymphomaniac girl with somewhat less giant breasts, the popularity of Hanna Montana, and the lifespan of a bacteria. Specializes in having sex, seducing older men (particularly law enforcement), and not getting pregnant despite a lack of birth control.
PC3: Jock - A horribly ugly and egotistical guy with the body of a 5'9" weight lifter, sans muscles larger than Heroine's breasts. Specializes in fucking Slut, being a jerk, and dying fast
PC4: Smart Guy - Either a horrid being who has not seen the sun or a mirror since the early 1940s (he's only 17) or a average looking guy. The horrid being specializes in dying, being annoying, and not having a use to the plot. Average guy specializes in advancing the plot, seducing Heroine, and surviving for at least one sequel
PC5: Goth Girl - A hot goth girl. Specializes in being a slut, getting killed, and serving no purpose what so ever. Can replace/be replaced by Heroine
(A joke team for the horror movie fan in all of us)

5: OH DEAR GODS ITS EATING MY BRAIN!!!
Setting: Zombie Apocalypse
Forte: Surviving
PC1: Leader - specializes in moral support, common sense, and being knowledgeable. Leads the team in looting, escaping, barricading, defense, and so much more! Weapon: A cricket bat
PC2: Long Range - specializes in archery, guns, and things that go boom. Helps kill zombies and kill zombies. Weapons: Guns, Explosives, and Guns
PC3: CQC - specializes in CQC. Helps kill zombies and clear area
PC4: Medic - specializes in healing non-infected wounds. Helps keep people from dying from non-virus things

 :lol I lol'd at the #4.

The 72nd Echelon seems nicely put together too.

The ZombieGroup is nice and simple.

I like 'em.

Are these imaginary teams or have you played in/GM'ed for any of them?

6: VIGILANTES TO THE DRAMA!
Setting: Gritty Superheroes
Forte: Roleplaying the shit out of things
PC1: Dark Leader - Either a tall handsome man who lost his parents or beautiful female abuse victim. The Dark Leader specializes in combat, leading the team, vowing to avenge things, being or giving the impression of being homosexual, attracting members of the opposite sex (in mens case) or same sex (in females case), being hot/handsome, having enemies, and gathering a team of similarly dramatic people.
PC2: Abused Female - A beautiful girl in her late teens/early twenties, has undergone physical, mental, and/or sexual abuse in her past. Specializes in being hot, being mildly effective in combat, crying about her past, being seduced by the Dark Leader, and consoling other abuse victims
PC3: Whiny Sidekick - A prepubescent male dressed in a flamboyant costume and does not know his father/mother. Specializes in being annoying, whining, making up ridiculous phrases of shock, and having the average lifespan of a Stormtrooper
PC4: Smart Cripple - A woman in a wheelchair. Specializes in computers, reminiscing about the day she lost the ability to walk, trying really hard to be dramatic

7: How To Invade Earth
Setting: Extraterrestrial Invasion
Forte: Invading Earth
PC1: Leader - A giant preying mantis. Specializes in CQC, tactics, technology, and being clueless about earth technology, human psychology, and physiology. Weapon: Claws, Laser Rifle
PC2: Diplomat - A pink female humanoid with green hair and desirable proportions. Specializes in lying, talking down hostiles, misguiding humans, and being "the straight man". Weapon: Laser Pistol
PC3: Small Hyperactive Violent Thing - A 4' tall ant that walks on its hind legs. Specializes in weaponry, UFO piloting, explosives, combat, and being incredibly violent. Weapon: Anything and everything
PC4: Technomaniac - A small grey humanoid with a large head and big black eyes. Specializes in computers, biology, psionics, repairs, and talking really, really fast. Weapon: His mind

I like #7. PC #2 walked straight off the set of a Gene Roddenberry* production.

* The spellchecker on this board underlines words like internet and even spellchecker, but not Gene or Roddenberry. It also catches Rodenberry, Roddenbery, Rodenbery, etc. Obviously a forum for geeks.
"Leave the wounded and run" is a perfectly viable tactic.

8: Terrorism Against Terrorists
Setting: Country Harboring Terrorists
Forte: Terrorizing Country Harboring Terrorists
PC1: Cell Leader - Responsible for all American funded terrorism in the cell's operational area. Specializes in planning attacks, and sorting intel. Weapon: 92F
PC2: Face - Responsible for gathering intel and getting favors. Specializes in persuasion, intimidation, lying, psychology, and disguise. Weapon: Knife, Pathfinder
PC3: Armory - Responsible for gathering equipment and assaulting the target. Specializes in black market sales, persuasion, intimidation, tactics, and military weaponry. Weapon: Desert Eagle, Uzi
PC4: Assault - Responsible for carrying out the mission. specializes in combat, explosives, tactics, advanced driving, helicopter use, and stealth
(I do not mean to offend anyone with this group and if I do, I apologize greatly)

Here is my ideal party, though my group is pretty close

Paranormal Researchers/Monster killers
Present day.

PC#1: The Free Lancer (finds the job, reconn, CQB, Monster expert):   The team loner, he finds the jobs brings the team together including any extra talent they may need.  A switch hitter fighting with one weapon or with two, favors grenades, pistols, melee weapons and PDW's, but can also use rifles and shotguns.  The team's monster expert he knows almost every thing that they'll need and favors rolls that put him in one on one situations with the enemy.

PC#2: Sarge (Heavy weapons, electronics, engineering, CQB):  Named for his similar personality to a certain Non Com. with an affinity for shotguns and a plethora of plans for the inevitable dawn of the dead that require the death of a subordinate, Sarge is both the team's go to weapons guy, and ace repair man keeping the normal paranormal research gear, and vehicles and electronics, in working order, also enjoys explosions, both making and using.

PC#3: The Face (Negotiations, Fire support): The dual purpose figure in the team, tasked with handling the negotiations, with his combination of silver tongue wit and Brian Reagan like sense of humor, if the rest of the team tries to get you to play a drinking game involving the similarity between the things the above mentioned comic and the Face say, just say no.  Also the face is equally adept with assault and sniper rifles.

PC#4: Power Nerd Sniper (the sniper): The new guy, Something of a bungler and constantly driving the rest of the team insane, the kid as he is some times called is still a talented sniper and almost as good with electronics as Sarge.

10: Undead Hitmen (AKA: OH THE IRONY!)
Setting: Criminal
Forte: Killing Targets
PC1: Handler - A tall man with unnaturally pale skin, glowing red eyes, and... wait, are those fangs? Specializes in planning, getting targets, sucking blood, and social interaction. Weapon: Fangs and silenced M1911
PC2: Sniper - A skeleton just lying there, wait, it's getting up. Specializes in stealth, marksmanship, infiltration, and not having flesh, blood, and organs. Weapon: Custom W2000, Claws
PC3: Tech And Sabotage - Nothing but a cold spot, stacked chairs, EVPs, unnatural shadows, malfunctioning electronics, abnormal EMFs, and a possessed refrigerator, so no worries! Specializes in infiltration, computers, making distractions, making people uncomfortable, possessing people and things, and being incorporeal. Weapon: Whatever it possesses
PC4: Indiscrete Assault - A rotting corpse, wait, is it moving? OH DEAR GODS IT'S EATING MY BRAINS!!! Specializes in eating brains, brains, moaning, brains, using guns and melee weapons, brains, saying brains, brains, biting, brains, chewing doors, brains, being invincible, and brains. Weapon: A shit load of guns, a deadly virus, his teeth, and his fists.

11: Men In Black
Setting: Government Conspiracy
Forte: Protecting The Conspiracy
PC1: Mr. Smith - The contact with The Agency and is often the face of the group. Specializes in planning, intimidation, diplomacy, and taking off/putting on shades in a REALLY cool manner. Weapon: Silenced USP, Desert Eagle
PC2: Mr. 23 - The brains of the group and the conspiracy nut. Specializes in research, computers, gathering intel, and formulating conspiracies. Weapon: Silenced Walther PPK, Glock 17
PC3: Mr. Hand - The assassin of the group and the most mysterious. Specializes in infiltration, stealth, firearms, CQC, marksmanship, explosives, and assassinations. Weapon: W2000, Silenced AMT Hardballer Longslide, knife
PC4: Ms. Red - The everyman of the group. Specializes in medicine, driving, piloting, and street culture. Weapon: Silenced 92F, S&W Model 29

12: The Intel Gatherers
Setting: Covert-Ops
Forte: Intelligence Gathering

The Brains: A meek looking German that wears glasses and on his freetime plays videogames, he's the guy that both plans missions when it is received and coordinates team members when on mission, typically staying in the team's anonymous van of TVs, Computers, and Radios
The Driver: A shaven-bald black guy that's tall, strong, and intimidating looking, although friendly if you get to know him. He's the man in charge of getting the team out if the s*** hits the fan, and helps protect The Brains
The Sniper: Military trained as a soldier by the U.S. before the Gulf War and serving in it too, the caucasion sniper has plenty pof years of experience behind him. It seems his experience has effected him though, for his looks are always grizzled, and his odor is always a bit bad
The Face: The Business world of his native Japan has taught The Handsome Face how to use his words to get what he wants when he wants.
The Intruder: Growing up in Compton, the Intruder had to live off of stealing and burglaring homes. He's still breaking and entering for a living today, on a whole differrent field

#13: The Trap
Setting: Any.
Forte: Combat Versatility.

The Leader: Battleproven in several recent conflicts as a mercenary, the Leader is a tactical mastermind. He uses various rifles and assault rifles, and prefers medium to long range combat. Weapon of Choice: Battlerifle.
The Medic: An ex-Special Forces Medic, he knows a thing or two about combat and field surgery. He carries medical supplies and standard equipment. He prefers medium range combat. Weapon of Choice: Battlerifle or Carbine.
The Bait: The Bait is a big, hulking, motherf*cker, not brighter than your average dog. He's an ex-convict, in prison for the involuntary murder of his little brother. The Leader got him out thanks to his connections. The Bait often wears brightly coloured clothing and equipment, and is heavily armoured if possible. Weapon of Choice: Anything, Fists, or Fireaxe.
The Needle: A small, slim man, The Needle used to be a professional hitman, but due to personal issues, stopped. He is a natural talent at sneaking, as well as reconnaissance. He often sneaks ahead of the team, and The Bait often manages to take all the attention of potential observers. Weapon of Choice: MP5SD or Fairbarn-Sykes Fighting Knife.

Tactics: In situations where the enemy engages in melee, the Leader and the Medic will fall back to favorable positions and cover the Bait while he engages the target. The Needle will assist the Bait in melee or close quarter battle. Meanwhile, the Medic and the Leader will provide overwatch and fire on any approaching target.
In ranged combat situations, the Leader and the Medic will open fire on the enemy, while the Bait leapfrogs from cover to cover under the suppressing fire of the others. The Needle will provide security for the Leader and the Medic, or if the situation dictates, follow the Bait at a distance, assisting him if needed/possible.

Spacers
Setting: Sci-fi/Space Opera
Specialty: Seeking out new civilizations, and sleeping with hot alien babes and forgetting to call them the next day.

PC 1: The explorer; The "leader" of the team, driven by a restless urge that is one part a yearning to see the world and one part a need to get as far away from his fellow.  Had fairly extensive knowledge on fields such as biology, archeology, and similar sciences, favors pistols and carbines when the group finds itself in trouble.

PC 2: The Mechanic; He keeps the ship running, he is also the one that keeps forgetting to call the alien babes, which tends to keep the entire crew running.  When a fight breaks out he favors two handed hammers and concussion Rifles. 

PC 3: The Pilot; friendly to the point he can be irritating.  A good pilot though his mouth has often gotten the team into trouble, not as much as the Mechanic's libido but, still enough Favors old west weapons and sniper weapons in combat.

PC 4: The negotiator; A sarcastic bastard that can be counted on to turn on the charm when necessary.  Also somewhat paradoxically, possesses the shortest fuse and has gotten the team into trouble more than once. Favors assault rifles.
