Q474: Assume I have a nondetection effect active on my person. I am standing close nearby to someone with no protection from divination spells. This person then has scrying cast upon him and fails his save. Can the caster perceive me when viewing the target's surroundings?

A474: Only if he beats the caster check. Otherwise, he sees only the other person. If the person happens to interact with you, the caster will probably think the guy's talking to himself or something.

Q 475:  I'm currently running Expedition to Castle Ravenloft.  My PC's are higher level than normal though (but I've increased the levels on Strahd and many of the other major bad guys).

A new player is joining the group with a cleric.  He is taking the Divine Spell Power feat from Complete Divine, which can allow him to boost his caster level by up to 4 when expending a turn attempt.

Holy Word gets very damaging when your caster level starts exceeding the HD of the creatures you cast it on.  I'm concerned what effect this might have on the main bad guy in a few levels (the PC's are only 10th level now).  What effects of Holy Word will affect a Vampire, and what ways are there to gain resistance to it?

If it makes a difference, I boosted Strahd with the Master Vampire PrC and gave him the Vampire Lord template (WotC web site), which actually makes the vampire lord impossible to truly kill (even if you cut off his head, burn the body and the head separately, disperse his body ashes in a river, soak his head ashes in holy water and bury them in consecrated ground, he can still be brought back to life if his ashes are dug up, separated from the holy water, dried out, and an unhallow spell is placed upon the head ashes.)

So, basically, does "Destroying" a vampire, via either turning or Holy Word, actually kill the vampire outright?

A475 ... from here http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20021018a
Quote
The only way to make sure that a vampire lord does not return is to cut its head from its body, burn the body and the head separately, scatter the ashes from the body over running water, immerse the ashes from the head in holy water, and bury the immersed ashes in consecrated ground. However, if the head ashes are ever unearthed and somehow separated from the holy water, dried thoroughly, and then subjected to an unhallow spell, the vampire lord can regenerate in a week if the ashes are placed inside one of its places of rest.

And the SRD here http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/holyWord.htm
Quote
Killed
Living creatures die. Undead creatures are destroyed.

In our games we allow other things that turn stuff to ashes to work like burning (disintegrate, say) ... so we'd have the holy word reduce him to ash.  Now how the hell you separate the head form the body, bury it, etc. is a good question.

You're clearly in DM-land, but if you went that way you'd have some objective basis for your ruling.  Things other than fire can destroy the body, but to truly keep the beast from coming back you have to do X, Y and Z.  That way the cleric can still one-round him if he wants ... but Strahd keeps coming back until/unless they finish the story or do the hooha to make him stay dead.

Q 476:  Suppose a warlock/fighter multiclass (for example) has Hideous Blow and Cleave.  If his Hideous Blow downs a foe, and he cleaves, will the cleave attack still gain the benefit of the Hideous Blow EB damage?

Q 478: Does Turn Resistance and its extra "HD" apply to all effects with regards to turning?

Example:  A 5 HD vampire being turned by a 10th level cleric.  Is the vampire destroyed or not?  It has turn resistance +4, making it count as 9 HD for all "turn, rebuke, command, or bolster" attempts.

A478 ... yes,...  Turn Resistance (Ex): A creature with this special quality (usually an undead) is less easily affected by clerics or paladins. When resolving a turn, rebuke, command, or bolster attempt, .

Found it in the index. It's an exact reprint of the relevant 3.0 rules which lets me know it's still valid.

Q479 Is there any way to cast spells with an XP component without having to pay the XP? I'd like to be able to cast limited wish to emulate Psychic Reformations.

Similarily is there any way to cast spells with an expensive (1000gp+) material component without providing the component?

Addendum: I think I could do both by casting Limited Wish as a Spell like Ability or a Supernatural Ability. The PRC Dweomerkeeper lets me do this, are there any other ways to cast limited wish as a Su or SLA?

Oh man. Oh man! I just DID this! I JUST DID THIS! For the soul purpose of Limited Wish, to boot! Nice timing in asking this.

You must be at least 15th level. If you are dwarf simply go Spellcasting Class 10|Runemaster 5.

If you are not a dwarf, you must be at least 18th level. Go spellcasting Class 10|Stoneblessed 3 (Dwarf)|Runemaster 5.

Both are from Races of Stone.

Runemaster does this at 5th level:

Permanent Rune (Ex): A 5th-level runesmith knows the secret of inscribing a permanent rune of a single chosen spell into his flesh. To inscribe a permanent rune, a runesmith must permanently sacrifice an arcane spell slot of one level higher than the spell to be inscribed as a permanent rune, and spend 24 hours inscribing the rune. If the spell has a costly material component, he must expend resources equal to 20 times the gp cost of the material component. If it has a costly focus, he must expend resources equal to the cost of the focus. If the spell has an XP cost, he must spend XP as if he had cast the spell normally. Once he has inscribed a spell as a permanent rune, a runesmith can activate the chosen spell as a spell-like ability (using his arcane caster level as the caster level) twice per day.

So once you spend it once, you're good, getting it twice per day as a spell-like ability.

This is 3.5, of course. Can't help you if you wanted 4.0.

As a general rule, this board is third edition.  4th ed has its own board.

A479

There is also some magical tubeworm race in one of the campaign settings books that casts all sorcerer spells as SLAs.  +2 LA.

Dweomerkeep from complete divine can do supernatural spell a few times day.

Spellstiched Necropolitans get nice SLAs

Shadowcraft Mage can emulate miracle without the XP cost
