I REALLY need this question answered!
« on: August 08, 2008, 05:26:57 PM »
I have been trying to get this question answered, but CustServ doesn't do questions based on 3.5 material anymore and the "Ask a Simple Question..." thread at the wizards forums keeps skipping my question, so I'm going to post it here hoping to get the answer I'm looking for.

I was wondering on the basis of classes and prestige classes (most likely the latter) whos' caster level is dependent on the levels of one or more spell casting classes (Example classes: the Nar Demonbinder and the Ur-Priest, I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them) on how they work.
As an example, If I were to take my first level of Nar Demonbinder after taking 5 levels of Wizard and 2 levels of Incantatrix, what would my caster level in Nar Demonbinder be? Would it be 6 or 8? Thanks in advance.
4e is a fine game.  It is not, however, the same type of game as 3.5.  For those of us who really liked the type of game 3.5 was, 4e just doesn't cut the mustard.  Yes, I tried playing it.  I was bored.  So was the rest of my gaming group.  I know there are people who love it... good for them.  But in the end, calling 4e a sequel of 3.5 is like calling checkers a sequel of chess.

Try posting in the D&D section.
This is the d20 section, d20 Modern and so on. You know, guns and stuff. Not Wizards and Ur Priests?

Can we have this thread moved?

As for your question, wouldn't your caster level equal to the total of your spellcasting classes? In this case DemonBinder1+Incantatrix2+Wizard5 = Caster Level 8?

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to post this in the wrong area, I'll try to remember that next time.
I hope you're right about the classes though, and thank you for a response. :D

Of course you didn't. It's just that you might have a better chance of getting an answer in the D&D section.

Oh, and welcome to BG. Glad I could help (although I'm not sure).

If in doubt, ask your GM (unless you are the GM).

It's been some time since I looked at some of those classes but I think all but the Wizard class were PrCs. So following that line of thought I would imagine they would all tally as wizard spellcasting levels. Now if you had levels in both Wiz and Sor then you would have to choose which one that PrC levels would raise.

I'm pretty sure I remember it now. Most magical PrCs grant "+1 to spellcasting level" per level (although some grant slightly less), and a character must choose which spellcasting class to apply this bonus to.

Quote from:  The D&D SRD
Spells per Day: When a new arcane trickster level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming an arcane trickster, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.
This is from the D&D 3.5 Arcane Trickster from the Online SRD. I guess looking in the books/at the rules kinda explains it.

minor problem with that tema is that ur priest is not typical magical prestige classes. I do not have unaproachable east, so I can't really comment on the nar demonbinder.

Ur priest has a special spell progression that takes them up to 9th level spells over the course of 10 levels, theoretically allowing 9th level spells as early as character level 14. In the book it clearly states how to determine the caster level for ur priest spellcasting. Take half the ur priest class level and add half the class level of other spellcasting classes. so an ex-cleric 10/ur priest 10 would have a cleric caster level of 0 (because being an ur priest means giving up on the gods) and an ur priest caster level of 15. A Wizard 10/ Ur priest 10 would have a wizard caster level of 10 and an ur priest caster level of 15.

Thank you guys, I got the answer I was looking for!!!(I just wanted to see how the marquee works!)
