Augury Part I: New Beginnings
« on: October 06, 2011, 11:18:54 PM »
Please write in spoilers for the moment since you're not all together.  Read stuff only from others in your group until further notice.  I strongly encourage interacting with each other.  Within the groupings below, read anything not in spoilers or anything specifically addressed to you.

We Begin.

The season is late fall.  Winter has been skulking in the dead of night, leaving frost on the leaves in the morning as evidence, but the unseasonal torrential rains of the past month speak of Summer's tenacity, even this far north.

What news of the outside world reaches the tiny hamlet of Springley Downs and the elves of Fayland Water is poor.  Traders speak of plague in the northern countries, striking down even the most hale of folk, though most of Escanthia seems to have been spared thus far.  Refugees have been fleeing south across the Inland Sea, and few travelers come the other way.  Still, with the Hallow Feast in the near future, everyone's spirits remain relatively bright (besides sour old Welton, who last had bright feelings the day before he was born).

The youths in particular are looking forward to the dance after the feast, as this year it should be a full moon, and who knows what could happen when there's a full moon during the Hallow Feast.

Group 1: Willow (zook), Boon (dna1), Isaac (flay), Snowy (shiki), Kara (skydrag)
Willow --
You've tracked the shaman far to the west, traveling for weeks.  He seems to be following the snow line, never straying too far in either direction.  He seemed to stay away from the (mostly) human settlements he's passed, and therefore so have you.  Last night he took refuge in some woods that seem relatively cultivated, signs that more humans or maybe elves live around here.  Oddly, you lost the trail around midday during a squall, and holed up in a tree near a small dirt road after dismissing your spirit beast, hoping to find it again once the rain stopped.  Before you can climb down, a wagon nears your tree.  You observe the events below, and can interact at any time.[...]
Boon, Isaac, Kara, and Snowy --
You went with Squire Mainor to Silverhaven, an extra trip to trade for supplies for the Hallow Feast.  It took you the usual two days to get there, at the Squire's plodding pace.  In the market, you heard talk of the plague... people are worried, though the most optimistic are sure that it won't reach this far north.  You even heard a few confident souls whispering that whatever causes the plague hates the cold.

After loading up the wagon with various and sundry goods, you've returned most of the way home.  As you ride through the trees, you discover a riderless, saddled horse grazing under the trees.  A little ways ahead a man lies face down in the mud.

Squire Mainor exclaims and rushes forward.  After examining him briefly, he straightens up.  "Well, he's dead.  Help me get him in the wagon, we'll take him back to Father Brelden for a proper burial."
Group 2: Gilgrim (crazy), Kyle (drh), Noel (imperatork),  Legion (phaedrus)
Kyle, Noel, & Gilgrim --
Kyle's mentor Moonglow was the pretty elven lady who found Gilgrim in the spring pool, and has been nursing him back to health (Noel lives with Moonglow as well, she is studying his development and nature).  Naturally, that means that Kyle has been doing most of the work entertaining the surly dwarven guest, as a "character-building exercise".  At Moonglow's urging (and to prevent you from bothering her studies), the three of you have gone back to the spring pool ("Fayland Water") so that Kyle can try divinations to help Gilgrim find his way back home.

Kyle's divinations are not particularly sophisticated, of course -- pretty much the only one you can toss around with impunity is Detect Magic.  You do so, and are very surprised that it lights up, pointing the way into the small cave opening that Gilgrim's exit created.[...]
Legion --
You hate getting wet.  After all that time (millennia, probably) sealed away in that dark cave, alone with nothing but your many-hued thoughts, the roof collapsed and you got completely drenched.  Just great.

Make a Listen check.

Okay, go ahead.  :)

Gilgrim Durgrin
Gilgrim Durgirn was sick and tired of being on the surface with these tree loving elves.  It was trying his patience and that was definitely something he had in VERY short supply.   This particular one, Kill, or whatever is particulary annoying.  He was weak and scrawny and had no stomach for ales.  The fair haired elf that dragged me back to life seemed to make a fine game of putting us together.  He didn't much like my obnoxious behavior though and that suited Gilgrim just fine, it kept him away as much as he could manage it.  Today he was at the lake that he surfaced from and he hoped to find some way back to his home.  There is just too little to go off up here on the surface.  He had considered digging into the ground and finding his way back home the long way, but it would be better if he could find some cavern or fissure to start from.  So far all they've found is a hole lot of trees...Kall is suppose to be "helping" is some way, but all he seems to do is take up time and drain his patience.

"Are you going to take all day about this Kell, I'd like to begin a search of the water.  I assume you've come up with nothing? Or have you decided you may have caught a glimpse of fog that may or may not be useful in any way."
Isaac
Isaac was off the wagon right behind the Squire, as usual. Knowing nothing of medicine, despite his mother's efforts, he had gone and tried to calm the horse as best he could. Bridle in hand, he had led the horse back as the Squire pronounced the man. Isaac handed off the reigns without a word, and went to go assist in getting the man into the wagon. "What do you think caused it, sir? The man's death, I mean."
Boon
Squire Mainor exclaims and rushes forward.

Boon was sitting next to Snowy, whom he feels a bond with because of her similar complextion(in human form, are any of us aware of your other form?) when the wagon came across the scene. As the Squire Mainor rushes to the body to examine it Boon turns to Snowy. He peers out at her from behind thick curtains of his white hair. As the fading light reflects off his pink eyes you can see he looks concerned.
In a hushed voice " This doesnt look good... I hope everythings ok.
After examining him briefly, he straightens up.  "Well, he's dead.  Help me get him in the wagon, we'll take him back to Father Brelden for a proper burial."
Boon gets up and approaches the body. In a timid voice he says to Mainor "I've got him Sir.". He bends down and picks the man up, slinging him over his shoulder. Boon goes to the back of the wagon and sets the corpse down in a cleared spot. He stands there a moment observing the man. He then looks over to each member of the party, observing there reactions.
Seconds later Boon moves over to secure the horse. He takes the reigns and starts whispering quietly to it. Running his fingers through its mane.
She frowns at the sight of the dead man. "I wonder who it was?"
She carefully searches the man for any clues of his identity. (1d20+6=16)

GROUP 1 --
Once he has been dug out of the mud, the man looks unusual.  He's certainly not from Escanthia -- though human, his skin is dusky (where most of the humans in Escanthia are fair), and his clothes are made of loose, thin, flowing fabrics in muted reds and browns.  His horse bears the mark of the livery stable in Silverhaven.

Squire Mainor frowns at Isaac.  "How should I know, boy?  I'm not some physicker.  We'll bring him back to Father Brelden and he'll tell us."

Kara, he has nothing on him (his clothes have no pockets).  However, in his saddlebags you find things.  On one side you find some standard traveling gear: a knife, bedroll, etc.  The other side bulges with something extremely heavy, and when you untie it the bag springs open immediately.  Inside is a large, oddly-shaped carved stone with green lettering on it, in a language you've never seen before.

Isaac
"I only meant.... he didn't meet death with violence, then? We shouldn't be worried about bandits on the road?" There was that edge in his voice of eagerness derived from youth. Not that Isaac expected bandits, between the small village and the elven-protected forests, full of rangers and Gods know what else.

Squire Mainor snorts.  "Bandits?  Here?  What would we have that's worth stealing?  But no, I don't see any violence on him, do you?"

Kara --
When searching him you found no obvious wounds, though to be more thorough you'd have to make a Heal check.

Kara
"If it was bandits, they would have taken this." she says, shuffling forward while carrying the stone slab within her arms. She puts it on the floor of the wagon, followed by an audible "phew" as she wipes the sweat off her brow, her hand brushing past her chestnut brown hair.

She then tells them if she noticed any wounds on the man. (1d20+1=20)
Kara didn't find any wounds.

Squire Mainor gives the stone a hairy eyeball.  "Well, whatever that is, we'd best be getting back.  The light's fading, and we don't have time for dilly-dallying."

Kyle
This can't be right. Sure, there's a mistake. Of course. No way. Sending me and Gilgrim alone in some strange places like this... No way. I don't like this. THIS, is surely not what I signed up for. Come on, this can't be. No way. No way.

Kyle's slim, weak figure walks alongside the dwarf, always looking around, sure that sooner or later something will come out of the woods and kill him for his excessive adventurousness. Now he got an assignment he didn't really understand, not that he could ever understand the assignments he was given in the past by his teacher, and that kinda bothered him. This feeling, added to the constant nagging of his companion and the great deal of phobias of the young human, really didn't help him on his task.

That is why he was even more amazed seeing the result of his detection spell.

Ok. I might be wrong now. Maybe I am. But I don't know, It really is strange... Look, see the opening you created a while ago, the first time you were here? Looks like there's some kind of magic source in there. We should go back and report. Definitely. You agree, right? Right?
Gilgrim
Shaking his head at the indecisiveness of the results of his spell, Gilgrim glances at their companion.  Shorter than even he was, this cat like boy was much more agreeable than the twitchy, so called, wizard.  Gilgrim rather liked his levelheadedness, but like any surface dweller, was attached to these woods too much.  Gilgrim was getting tired of being above ground and so,...

"I am going to go see what's down there.  If you want to go run and tell your mistress that you have found something, that maybe, but you aren't sure, but could be, something your not quite able to see, Then be my guest!  I want to find a way back to my home and you tell me there is something down there.  Let's go and see what it is."

Taking off his pack, but leaving his weapons and armor, Gilgrim prepare to dive into the water to get to the cave enterance (( I'm assuming the cave was in the water....but I could have read that wrong. ))

The cave entrance is above the water, but to get there you have to wade through the pool.  It's not overly difficult.

Gilgrim (and others if they follow) --
From the bright sunlight shining through the trees, when you stand at the cave entrance you can see a goodly ways in.  The walls are rough and newly broken, as one would expect.  Roll a spot check.

Noel
The small catboy followed the human named Kyle and the stranger. He knew his caretaker good enough to understand that she wanted a little peace to conduct her research. Noel was thankful for taking care of him, so he leaved her alone and not having anything better to do, he went with his masters disciple. He didn't want to disturb their search, that's why he stayed away, but observed them from afar with curiosity.

While Boon looks and talks to her, Snowy nods slowly "Uh huh...", thoughtful. Before he gets up to go see the dead man, Boon can clearly see she shares his uneasiness with the situation.

As the others are busy with the man, Snowy looks around the trees and bushes to see if they are indeed alone here. (Spot check (1d20+4=10))

Kyle
Damn it, he's right! I can't just go back and tell her that I might have seen something magical. What if I messed up the spell and when she comes here she finds out that the cave is empty? She'd skin me alive! I knew I was bound to die an horrible death, but why now? I'm still young! ... Well, well, what to do? The dwarf is right but I won't let him have it that easily... Oh no, I won't.

His face still covered by his hand, in a thinking stance typical of his, he starts talking to the dwarf, trying to sound as confident as possible, an elaborate plan in his mind to tell him that he was right, without him knowing of his acknowledgement.

Well, from a point of view of someone who...

And as he turns to the dwarf he realizes that he's already heading to the cave.

Ok then, you were right, there's no need to storm off like this! Come on, wait for me!

And the human, looking around jittery, hoping to survive at least another day, follows the dwarf, trying to reach him at the entrance of the cave.

Kyle's spot roll: 1d20+3= 5

Boon
As people start talking about bandits Boon starts to get alittle nervous. He anxiously looks back and forth between the two sides of the road, cautiously placing a hand on his spiked chain.
Slowly he climbs back onto the wagon and takes his seat next to Snowy. His eyes still darting nervously about the woods. Leaning in close to Snowy
"Men dont die from nothin'.... I dont like this." Boon takes the spiked chain off of his back and sets it down next to him, resting one hand on it as he talks to her.

Gilgrim Durgirn
(( Correcting, he grabs all his gear and wades through the pool to the enterance of the cave ))

Stepping into the cave, Gilgrim's surface strained eyes can only stare at the walls and stone trying to remember the feel of the ground again.

Spot Check (1d20+3=4)
