Lost a bet! Must play 4e Darksun. Need character, please.
« on: October 05, 2011, 02:08:52 PM »
First, thanks for looking at this post.

I don't know 4e at all.  So I am going to ask for far more detail than generally provided in an optimization request.  I will do all the reading and Googling and try not to ask too simple and obvious questions.  As such please, if you can, source the tricks and abilities so I can go read how they work.  If the text and my Google fu fail to enlighten me, please do not mind if I bug you to explain some mechanisms.  Also, and perhaps more important, any advice on what I NEED to know and understand to play 4e would be great.

We are Starting at first level and will probably go to the mid 20s.  It is a DarkSun campaign, so anything that fits should be sellable to the DM.
I do not even know what other character generating options I should ask about.

I am hoping for something like a tier one character, if that is even possible.  I imagine I will be asked to be in the "leader" type role, not that I fully understand what that means.

In 3e I prefer artificers and clerics generally, and buffers with a nuke in the back pocket (if everything goes south) specifically.

Thanks for your help.

Good luck making that bet ...  ;)

Technically Dark Sun doesn't have deities for Clerics,
and Artificers are "supposed" to be screwed.
DS is supposed to have boons instead of items
but the rules are somewhat unfinished. Gives you room
to negotiate back in to an Arty-ish character - if you want.

Ardent probably is closest to the game feel and what you prefer.
Wotc CO has the guide. You can find something near your ideas.
I like Cog Crystals, but that's just me.
Some of the builds are rather Healy, but they don't have to be.
"Leader" is kinda where all the in-combat buffing type spells ended up.
This gets extreme with Lazy Lord (warlord) builds, to not even attack.
Ardent can be mixed in with Lazy Lord ... not that I've any pointers on it.

4e is not 3e.
Take your 3e ideas and throw them out the window.
Just play it and see how it goes / roll and role with the punches.
 :D
It says D&D so hey ... why not ?
