Laptop Sound Card Upgrade
« on: September 22, 2011, 06:58:50 PM »
I have a laptop, but the headphone jack has been detached from the motherboard.  For some reason this means that the laptop thinks that something is plugged into the headphone jack so the speakers won't work.

What would be a better option, buying an expresscard sound card or getting a usb audio adapter?

What OS? You may be able to disable the port and allow your speakers to work again.
Nevermind. Apparently every laptop manufacturer decided it was a brilliant idea to have the headphones short the whole sound system rather than it being a logical switch.

I'd say get which ever is cheaper for the replacement sound card. All things being equal I would get the USB one just because it can be used on another computer later with relative ease.

USB is cheaper, but I don't know anything about quality differences.

Unless you have some high end speakers/headphones you won't be able to tell the difference.

The question then becomes one of how good are the cheap models?  I've narrowed my choices down to this and this unless there is something comparably priced that is better.
